A welcome song, Keriba ged nor e (Babana) is sung by women beating snake-skin drums and boys from Djarragun College, a school for indigenous students near Cairns, Far North Queensland, perform the traditional "Kab Kar" dances from Murray Island in the Torres Strait Islands, depicting daily life in the islands: Naigai Kawa (Looking for fish) and Sambai ba (Finding the fish and scooping them up). I remember watching a Torres Strait dance for the first time in 2003 at the SPG in Fiji. I found their dance the most fascinating. Like real birds. Very nice. 👍

Correct me if i'm wrong but they sort of look like they're mixed Australian Aboriginals with Papua New Guinean 😮
No, not mixed, Torres Strait Islanders are Melanesians, like people in PNG, not Aborigines.
@@LudoKuipers cool thx for the info!
@@LudoKuipers I've heard Torres Strait Islanders received Austronesian influence, as you can see from the dance here. It has strong Pacific Islander vibes.
@@LudoKuipers Torres strait Islander are in between Aboriginal and PNG, but they are their own race, but they are still part of Australia.
@@ali40589the Torres Strait has influence from Austronesian speakers to the east, particularly aspects of culture relating to canoes and voyaging as well as some loan words in both Miriam Mir and Kalaw Lagaw Ya, but I think this dance is purely a eastern island dance without Austronesian influence
Right
