I never seen Sathasiwam, But seen Aravinda de Silva, Sangakkara & Jayasuriya. My favourite Cricketer is Sanath Jayasuriya. But The greatest Batsman Sri Lanka ever produced was Aravinda de Silva. There is no doubt about it. Sangakkara was a class batsman too but the abilities that Aravinda had with his batting skills, such a gifted Batsman. But other side if you talking about greatest Cricketer Sri Lanka ever produced, then you need to consider all round not only Batting. I dont really think no one can ever come even Close to Sanath Jayasuriya with over 20k international runs, over 500 wickets and over 200 catches Woow what a amazing childhood we had Great cricketers like Sanath, Aravinda, Arjuna, Vaas, Murali, Gurusinghe Thank you 🙏
Arguably, Aravinda de silva is the best out of the bunch Srilanka have ever produced...Those fluent hooks and pulls of Aravinda is always a treat to watch..lot of modern day cricketers fail to play those shots successfully...Aravinda is definitely a goat
I'm a Pakistani. I'm not qualified to answer this question. My favorite Sri Lankan batsmen are Roy Dias and and Arvinda De Silva. I have seen them at their best. I also like Sanath Jayasuryria a lot.
I've never seen Mahadevan Sathasivam in action, but have heard of him and read of him too quite a lot, surely he must have had been a great batsman who could have succeeded in any era under any condition/s. In addition to his heroics in the middle, he's pretty famous and at times infamous too for his deeds well off the field too .... I think he had died relatively young, in his 60s or so, in 1970s before I was even born .... Sathasivam may stand out as the best batsman produced by Sri Lanka before they got their test status (in '81/82) by some distance, F.C. De Seram may come as the second / runner-up, who happens to be another quite interesting character pretty infamous for his contribution as a high-ranking police officer too over his involvement in the attempt to topple the subsequent government of Sri Lanka run by Sirimavo Bandaranaike .... Out of the ones to follow them after Sri Lanka got their test status, Aravinda De Silva at his peak may standout as the most complete all-round batsman, who would have had an even more remarkable career had he fully understood his own abilities and worked on mastering them from his early 20s .... In terms of the sheer natural talent, none would challenge Sanath Jayasuriya though (With all due respect to him, I'm only interested in his abilities as a player in the middle, just leave aside some of his quite infamous exploits off the field !.... Still with all that, there's no denying that he used to be one of the greatest players of all-time.). The influence/impact these two had on the outcomes of the games they played in; both tests and ODIs, had been quite significant and they could win the games quite single-handedly on their own too when in full flow .... Coming to Kumar Sangakkara, he'll mostly go down in the history as a batsman who made the most of the comparatively limited abilities he had got. He's no match to De Silva, let alone to Jayasuriya, in terms of pure natural talent, he made the most of it by playing within his limitations waiting for more glamorous game-changing contributions to come from the other end, at times sacrificing the outcomes of the games he played in too a bit selfishly in favour of his personal statistics ....
Well thought out response. Sanga, himself, has admitted he was not talented as the rest, incl his mate Mahela. He is a testament to hard work. Conversely, Aravinda with all the talent in the world, could have reached even higher heights had he worked harder. Perhaps, a fusion of Ara and Sanga would be perfect. Sorry, I had never seen Sathasivam bat. Wish there were some old clips of him.
A.D,Silva. I have seen him played vs S,Akhtar @ asian test championship final. No one able to played even normal shot vs S,Akhtar, but A,D,Silva? He just pull, hooked akhtar, like street bowler...
ARVINDA DE SILVA was a class act,his century in 96 w.cup in Lahore was the only ton made while chasing in this big event till TAVIS HEAD in recent in such occasion,SANGAKARA was a great batsman also,he was treat to watch with his grit n sound technique n no nonsense attitude like ARVINDA THE GREAT.
I never seen Sathasivam...But why would all those great players like Sobers and Frank Warrell were so astounded? I mean there is some talent...Unfortunately no video of him also. I remember one time on TV even Stanley Jayasinghe said Sathasivam was the greatest. its a mystery why he was talked so highly. But dont forget Anura Tennakoon. I remember he was the only batsman who was scoring one time
Anura Tennakoon and Roy Dias may have been pretty much in the same league as technically sound top-order batsmen with flair. Yes, the two had been among the best batsmen we had during their respective eras (Tennakoon had been a few years senior to Dias, and quite unfortunately missed out on playing tests for Sri Lanka as he retired only a couple of years or so before Sri Lanka got their Test status.). Still, in terms of overall batsmanship, I don't think that they can be compared with someone like Sathasivam who had definitely been a much more capable all-round batsman as per the records/testimonies by many ....
He is absolutely correct to name Sathasivam as the best batsmen. Papa Saram (FC De) would be 2nd. Unfortunately Podi kollo/Sinna podiyans will not understand as why. They need to start exploring these players performances and contribution to get SL cricket to where it is today. Aravinda and Kumar will definitely be in the top 5 but not Jayasuriya.
According to the history sathasiwam is the greatest batsman in sri lanka.I have never seen his batting skills. But according to many of the strongest batsmen in the world at that time, Sathasivam is the greatest batsman born on this earth. Even Garfield Sobers said that when Donald Bradman was playing.

As an Indian I rate Aravinda very highly..above Jayasurya and Sanga.

As a Sri Lankan Tamil I rate Aravinda at the best. He was my hero. But I never saw Sathisevam and he may well of been the goat.

All i can say from the batsmen who i have seen Aravinda is in a different level! Cant comment on Sathasiwam as i never seen him bat..!

Aravinda Silva.Greatest .
There were many & I would rate Roy Dias, Aravinda Desilva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jaywardene & Kumar Sangakkara among the best SL batsmen.
If this conversation is more lengthy, this could be more interesting

I consider Roy dias is the best player sri Lanka ever produced also Aravind de silva
For me it certainly Desilva
The greatest Sri Lankan batsman was Roy Diaz. Those who followed Sri Lankan cricket when they gained entrance into Test cricket would know.

Aravinda de Silva
No doubt.. ARAVINDA DE SILVA

Sad Roy Diaz didn’t play county. Barry Richards got to play there for posterity.
