I have done a couple of those typical 'shoe box' deck and hull joins. I hated the original version as it was a weak spot and had so many fasteners penetrating it always lead to leaks. Wasn't particularly fond of the stainless rub strip either as it seemed ineffectual and prone to corrosion (one was aluminum which was worse). I used epoxy for the whole job other than the top layer and gel coat. Putty to fair the transition (I kept what thickness of original glass was there). The cabins were built so separating the deck and hull were not an option. Once the transition was faired to my satisfaction I laid on step layers using epoxy and glass tape (I used factory rolls for ease) stepping down the thickness with each layer. It has been years but as I recall I used eight or ten layers of heavy cloth tape. When I was done it all blended quite well and I had a structural joint with uniform thickness (no weak or hard spots in a dock bumping etc.) that was totally water tight and that actually looked better than the rub rail style. With your abilities at fairing and blending I would have thought that would have been your option too. I have reapplied rub rails in the past and was never pleased with the look nor the practicality. On commercial boats of this size and larger you never see a separate joint unless it is some cheap sport boat masquerading as a heavy duty rig. I believe it would be quicker for you as well as better. Anyway the boat is progressing well and the quality is high.
Hey hey Dougie! I did think it nearly looked good enough to skip a rub rail. I thought a polished stainless rub rail would look fancy. I’m going silver bottom sides with white deck. See what it looks like after I fair it good. I wasn’t going to fade any Fibreglass to the glass strip. I think I’d end up grinding down too much glass to be worth the effort. I’m thinking the epoxy will putty won’t crack fingers crossed 🤞 haha 😅😅😅 The reason I have that little hatch in the anchor well into the subwoofer box is to inspect for leaks and to assist with installing the massive speaker too so I totally understand what you’re saying about leak points. Very valid reason I will keep an open mind to your suggestion. Thankyou so much for your idea! Cheers 🍻

I'm sure you know this but just in case, to stop the itch from fiberglass when sanding it, rub on talcum powder on your skin before you start sanding. The powder stops the little fibers from digging in and you stop the itch.

Yep i got talc sitting next to shed entrance. I put it all over me when i expect to do bulk sanding 🍻
