If you try plain grits make sure and put lots of butter and salt in them. Im originally from Louisiana and i Love them. And biscuits and gravy are the bomb if they are done right.
I agree completely I mean that is why we all go to these different places is to try something we've never had before and would never have thought of trying only to be surprised that what we tried is actually delicious!
The thing about grits is that you have to know how to prepare them properly. Grits really have no flavor and a weird texture but seasoned properly and paired with the right things, they can be a good base to support a nice dish.
Brunch is usually from 10:00 to 2:00 and most popular on Sundays, although people go out on Saturday as well, but not as much. Expect lines at popular places on Sundays.
6:54 just a FYI. that isn't just shrimp and grits. that is grits with shrimp etouffee on top with a fried egg. while etouffee is also great (comes in a varity of types, like crawfish or shrimp) it's isn't normally on shrimp and grits. it's usually just grits, butter, and peeled shrimp tails.
Right, Gayna. My idea of brunch: omelette loaded with veggies and cheese with corn flake battered French toast. Add a mimosa, Prosecco, or Bellini. And there you go.
Shrimp and Grits isn’t really a breakfast item for many of us in the south, it’s more of a brunch/lunch/dinner item but it can be on breakfast menus as well. I’d say South Carolina shrimp and grits are probably the best but that’s not to take anything away from New Orleans or other areas making them cause they’re all pretty great but grits are more of an acquired taste for many.
I find it funny that people from a country that believe baked beans, stewed tomatoes, and blood mixed with oats, find it strange to eat chicken or shrimp for breakfast. Grits is made out of cornmeal.
Hey guys , I’m from Kentucky , the fall colors are here still in the trees , they are starting to go cause of the cooler weather , it’s beautiful in this region of the states , we have natural bridge and mammoth cave ( largest cave system in the world ) they have it all lit up inside , and home of bluegrass music , home of Loretta Lynn and Tennessee is the home of Dolly Parton , she has Dollywood , have a great time , the accents are something u will have to get used to but we are a great friendly bunch of people
I think it's funny all the reactors are amazed at the gravy on biscuits and gravy but it's basically a better version of a bechamel sauce, which is used in many countries.
Grits are kinda like rice. They take on flavor without having much of their own. That’s why people are so divided on it. It absolutely depends on what you add. Salt, pepper, butter and/or cheddar cheese are probably the most popular ingredients. Also it can depend on how much water is used in the cooking process. Some like them thick and others like them a little runnier. My favorite way to have them is mixed with cheddar cheese and lots of black pepper, served with a spicy sage flavored breakfast sausage, scrambled eggs and toast with jam. 🤤
Grits are ground hominy (white corn), boiled and often served with a lot of butter and things like cheese or jalapeno... and of course shrimp sometimes.
While in Nashville, you have to go to Butchertown Hall for brunch (the biscuits and gravy are unbelievable), Monells - which is soul food served family style, and Hattie B’s for hot chicken
Monells fried chicken is ridiculous!. I moved back to CA after living in the Nashville area for the last 12 years...some things I miss. Hattie Bs or Princes...can't hate it!
You aren't supposed to eat something light for breakfast. Breakfast is supposed to be your highest calorie meal of the day, and Dinner is supposed to be your lightest.
Grits are a type of porridge made from hominy - corn/maize. As a Southerner, NEVER have grits with sugar. Salt, pepper, and butter to taste. Other spices after you've had "plain" grits. Enjoy!
I’m a southerner and sugar on grits was a way to get grits into my mouth as a child. As an adult, I eat them with butter, salt and pepper which is my favorite way to eat them now. However, I don’t mind cheese grits for a change up every now and then.
Im not usually a fan of grits. However this one place that used to do Sunday brunch (damn you COVID) would do a buffet, serve it over a billiards table and one of the items was bacon cheese grits with a little bit of red pepper. Oh my God you talk about some good eating. Also had some amazing biscuits and gravy. I was working overnight shift at the time so being able to get a hit meal and some good cocktails at the end of my week was the best thing ever.
So most U.S. restaurants that serve Sunday brunch, do so from around 11am to 2 to 3pm. Some include ‘free’ brunch drinks as part of the total tab, or all you can drink at a special price.
I know that to someone not used to the idea of stake and eggs for breakfast is strange. For me it was a norm. I am a Respiratory Therapist. My main function was operation of life support (starting, maintaining and ending, along with post support).Earlier in my career I worked evening night shift (3pm-7am) 16hrs with acassional 12 hrs. Shifts. So your days and nights were shifted. My work day was at night when everyone else was sleeping. My bedtime was during the day when most people were at work. Eight o'clock was my dinnertime. Steak and eggs was my main meal. So, it kind of makes since.
I hope that when you come over you get to try some of these. And find them in a local restaurant not a chain. Girts are basically corn/hominy that is milled and cooked in milk or water. If you do not want the shrimp you can just have them with cheese a bit of salt and pepper or ad butter and a bit of sugar, all great.
Alabama you should be able to get good southern grits and shrimp. They're at brunch, not breakfast, so its ok. Lol. Like the alcohol. It's a deep south dish. Bloody Mary is the perfect hangover remedy. I add olive juice and a lot of olives in mine, along with garlic powder and black pepper. Those long green beans are good in it too
Grits are ground up corn. They're gritty, nothing like oatmeal. Most people eat them with butter,a pinch of salt and cheese but I like them with sugar, some type of creamer and a little bit of vanilla. They are a hearty type dish. I can have a bowl of them alone and stay full for hours.
The reason for alcohol at brunch is quite simple. It's not breakfast. It's a mixture of a late breakfast and an early lunch (hence brunch) that's usually enjoyed starting at like 10:30am-11:30am on a Saturday or Sunday after a night out. You'll usually have 1 or 2 lighter cocktails like a bloody mary or a mimosa to bite the snake or have a little hair of the dog to shake your hangover along with fatty, protein heavy food that mixes breakfast foods like eggs with more lunchy items like short ribs or shrimp like in this video.
Grits (by themselves) are a common Southern breakfast dish that are typically enjoyed with either butter or maybe cheese, etc. "Shrimp and Grits," on the other hand, is a savory dish that is typically eaten for lunch or dinner, not breakfast. Of course, they were having "brunch," which is part-lunch.
I will let you know when you’re in the south if you want to try the best food you need to go to the local spots not the big chain restaurants there is a really good one near Nashville called Loveless diner
I’ve had visited London on several occasions. One of my favorite cities. They definitely serve brunch there, and not just for the tourists, and it can be very boozy also including Bloody Marys.
Both Alabama and Kentucky have their own local barbecue style. Alabama's is smoked chicken with tangy white sauce and Western Kentucky's is mutton barbeque.
Bloody Marys are incredible! Sometimes they'll have bacon, cheese squares, a beef jerkey stick in them. I have even been to a restaurant that puts a mini cheeseburger (slider) on top. Many restaurants have build your own bloody marys too. You can choose your vodka, how much vodka, how spicy of bloody mary mix, everything. Brunch isn't brunch without a bloody.
Grits are just corn. Season them likewise. Most people add salt and butter with corn on the cob and popcorn so the same goes for grits. If you eat corn, then you can eat grits.
I love a good bloody mary EXCEPT when they put too much worcestershire sauce in it ... then it is gross . . that one looks like lots of the sauce . . .ugh. Grits is made from corn meal -- it's corn grits . . so yes it "gritty" . . you may have to try a couple of times - and it's delicious with butter and a bit of salt and pepper or cheesy.... We don't drink warm milk...yuk . . . unless you intentionally heat it up...but that's ice cold with warm cookies! YUM YUM
For grits you need to add lotsa butter, some salt n pepper. Possibly try cheese grits and even add real bits of bacon to it 👍👍👍 Generic chain restaurant grits are likely to suck!!! Too many don't do it properly! I make mine with all of the above, butter, cheese, bacon, salt n pepper! Just so yummy!!! 👍❤️
I don't know why Ollie keeps saying grits is like porridge, I thought grits were whole dried ground up corn kernels. The biscuits and gravy just looks absolutely delicious! I hope you all give it a try and then some! I think that was a good treat Josh and Ollie had at the end, the milk and cookies! The food portions can be big in America, I suggest you share the dishes with each other so that you don't have to order too much food. Safe travels! ☮💕
Please just remember that if you are eating Creole or Cajun cuisine outside of Louisiana, do not expect it to taste nearly as good. If you're going to be in Kentucky, eat their local cuisine. I don't know where you all are going but if you are going to Lexington while you're in Kentucky, you have to go to "Ramsey's." Best fried chicken I've had in that whole region in my opinion. Must try! I hope it's still there.

What would be truly hilarious is if y'all ran into Josh n Ollie n did a food vid together!!! 😮😛👍 Aiden... Also, "Bloody Mary" the drink is named after Queen Mary I, Bloody Mary! You'd prolly only like it if you like tomato juice and vodka.
So the Bloody Mary drink is named after Mary Tudor, the 16th century British monarch, a daughter of Henry VIII, and a persecutor of Protestants. Sadly, there’s no Bloody Elizabeth, Mary’s successor and younger sister, known for her persecution of Catholics. (Whew!)
I grew up in the South and never really cared much for grits. It's basically just one of those filler foods like rice that requires other things to be added for flavor. And in terms of consistency I greatly prefer rice. Which may be why I prefer shrimp risotto ;)
If you season and cook grits properly...which most people don't. They are not filler foods and compliment your protein nicely. And risotto is a prime candidate for other things to be added to give it flavor. They literally cook it in tons of stock and wine, add butter and cheese. So for you not really caring for grits..risotto is just the rice version of that. Make it make sense.😂
@@kikibigbangfan3540 Sigh at the idiocy of laughing at your own self-righteous comment. I already said risotto was rice and also a filler food. Grits are absolutely positively 1000% a filler food. GFY!
That's why when I go out for southern food, I always have to bring some friends and we'll eat family style because it sucks to order 1 dish to yourself or suck up your pride and order multiple and look like a total fatass lol. Ever since I moved out and started living on my own at 18, I never adopted the "breakfast food only for breakfast" type moniker. Now I'm in my mid 30s and I'm glad my wife and I can wake up and eat whatever we want lol. My mom says I'm weird when I'll have pasta at 6am. Also about the bloody mary, there's a stereotype (not sure if still popular now) but it was single middle aged men would drink V8 juice and vodka as a hangover cure in the morning. It's in quite a few movies and young people tease them about how they think it's "healthy" because it has V8 in it.
Americans do not eat shrimp n grits for breakfast lol Thats dinner or brunch grits our breakfast grits are usually with bacon sausage butter lots of butter, salt and or cheese.
When I saw him dip that chicken sandwich into the gravy I was like "oh yeah he's starting to think like an American now" 😂😅
No doubt.

Butter and salt on grits is a must!

In Japan, rice porridge is also a thing. There can be various types of porridge, not just the oat variety (oatmeal).
*Oatmeal* is oats, grits is corn, porridge is both.

@@GodLovesComics idiocy must be catching then.
Isn’t grits hominy? Idk but I hate both
@@kikibigbangfan3540 You are clearly Patient Zero...in all respects. :)
4:30 mike busted lol
They eat shrimp and grits anytime of day
Grits is similar to Polenta.
You won’t find any seafood like New Orleans elsewhere, even in the south.
