    3:08 The "class B" depicted here seems more like the unbiased version which, yes, will have major levels of crossover distortion. Douglas Self, on the other hand, classifies class B as the optimally-biased push-pull output stage, with class AB being a class B with a pointlessly high idle bias, which (ironically enough) actually leads to *higher* distortion than the optimal bias. Plus the associated extra heat waste.

      To be very fair to Boss, they didn't want a normal product review. They just wanted to be used as an example in a technology explanation video like this.
      I chose the topic and equipment and had free reign to say whatever I wanted and fortunately the Katana Artist is very good.
      If companies make good product honesty is nothing to be scared of.
      The fact that Boss even want to work with me considering the shade I've thrown at the original Metal Zone in the past should speak volumes about how supportive they are to honest content.

    I have the Katana Artist...love it! The thing is LOUD. I know about amp classification from the car audio world. Car stereo amps are rated the same. Class D was always reserved for powering bass subwoofers. If you look at all the latest bass guitar amps on the market now, you'll see a trend of super small heads with crazy power (like 800 watts). That's class D power.

    • @mkaali
      @mkaali 6 лет назад +3

      Erik Stone How come class D power means less volume than class A if D has higher efficiency than A?

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1 6 лет назад +1

      When talking about efficiency, there is always a "compromise". If you put a high efficiency shower head on your shower, does it flow more or less water? Same concept here.

    • @mkaali
      @mkaali 6 лет назад +3

      Erik Stone If both showers take water from the plumbing at the same rate, the one with the higher efficiency makes my head wetter.

    • @ryanbwags
      @ryanbwags 6 лет назад

      Totally spot on. I've got a 250 watt Carvin bass head that could fit in my gig bag. Sounds great and has more than enough power on tap for whatever I need. I'll never lug a a giant bass amp to a gig ever again.

    • @ErikStone1
      @ErikStone1 6 лет назад

      mkaali both showers do not take the water at the same rate. The water hits the shower heads at the same rate, but the efficient head creates a bottleneck that helps conserve water (which is what makes it efficient). So with the amp, as you heard in this video...class A is a full stream of power with very little bottleneck. This is why it sounds pure. The downside is that it creates a lot of heat, so it looses energy in that heat (ie: non-efficient). Class D processes power completely different since that power is "filtered". You may loose sound quality and volume due to the filtration, but what you get in return is a cooler running amp that doesn't need large heat sinks and air moving around it to cool it down. It's a trade off. Maybe someday we'll have a new class of amp that has the best of both worlds.

    "Distortion is usually the Achilles heel of solid-state amps."
    Interesting. So you and Glenn Fricker both think that the hardest thing for a SS amp to produce is good distorted tones.
    I record with an older man who does a ton of jazz, and he thinks the hardest thing for a solid-state amp to make are clean tones that are crystal-clean but have that *feel* and interesting tone that only tubes/valves can make, and he thinks SS amps (which a lot of jazz guys use because SS amps are cleaner and cheaper, so the jazz guy can spend more money on heroin) are sterile and boring. He uses a Fender TR set super clean.
    I used to record with a guy who is in a blues band, and he never uses an SS amp because to him, no solid state amp can make a decent edge-of-breakup overdrive. He thinks a good overdrive is the hardest thing for an amp to do, and likes an old Fender Tweed with the gain up, being pushed by a TS808.
    I guess I am a British rock guy (I'm a Yank, but I am a diehard Vox fanboy) and I got an all-valve Vox clone because I like that nasty, fuzzy, EL34/EL84 edge-of-breakup tone that only valves can do. To me, a Vox tone is the hardest thing for an SS amp to make.
    I guess my question is: is it all because that's the type of music we like and play? Is it because we listen to that type the most so we know what to listen to?

    • @felipeuchida3378
      @felipeuchida3378 4 года назад

      From my personal experience, there is no crystal clear clean tone as good as the ones made by transistors. Tubes tend to deliver a mid hump everytime. Some people perefer it, but it is no high fidelity at all.

  • @fretbuzz59
    @fretbuzz59 6 лет назад +1

    But here's the thing: For this kind of music, and these types of tones, it kinda doesn't matter WTF you play through.

  • @jaysonstager8479
    @jaysonstager8479 6 лет назад +2

    Now, I do have a question: in what way could the wireless system affect the tone, if at all? Generally these systems do have a loss of quality, so if this is case (a big if) could this render the better amplification useless? I also understand that it may have just been for video recording, but I am curious if there would be a noticeable loss of signal otherwise.

    I've got a Boss Katana 50 and it is my favorite thing in the world. I only really play guitar in my home so dropping the output wattage with the flip of a switch while still keeping things sounding good is awesome. And that amp SOUNDS. GOOD. Even if I had an excellent 1W valve amp I'd still need a bunch of a pedals to get the sounds I'm after. The Katana has many effects built in so I don't have to journey very far. Its not the ultimate amp, but its all one really needs if they are after a simple, affordable, practice amp.

      wykydrone Older Behringer amps in general have this problem. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to switch a Behringer amp off and back on to get it to work again. No answer as to exactly what is the exact culprit, if it’s down to using component/components that aren’t right for the job or if it’s that the designs are poorly engineered on paper by people that actually don’t know what they are doing. I just have never taken the time to troubleshoot the problem as I’ve never owned any of the products, they were only what was provided by others that hired me to run them. That said, this has improved in recent years, however it still happens in newer products, but less frequently or just is taking longer to develop. This also does seem to happen faster in environments where the power available isn’t very stable.

    So, this is actually a Katana promo, thinly disguised as an informative piece on amplifier classes. I'm not impressed. A couple of points. First: class A amps or not more linear than class AB amps. The distortion just contains different harmonics. Second, it is not just boutique amps that have a single ended design: all early Fenders did and so does the recent Marshall class 5. Second, class D is in fact vastly more linear than class AB. Even cheap class D amps vastly outperforms class AB amps. Almost all PA systems nowawadays are class D and those need a much higher bandwidth than a guitar amp. Third: you are suggesting that the Katana is somehow unique in using a class AB solid state power stage. But that's nonsense. The micro terror for instance also has a simple class AB power opamp as a power stage. Hell, the old samick practice amps were all class AB. Sorry, but I hold you to a higher standard than this!

    @leftaroundabout 6 лет назад +7

    I appreciate that you use technical electronics terms despite catering for a guitarist audience, but in this case it doesn't make sense. Linearity is not a relevant metric for electric guitar amps at all, what with overdrive being the outcome when you drive an amp _out of_ the range where it even tries to behave linearly. If linearly _were_ a relevant quantity, then there wouldn't be a discussion because class D is, within the audible spectrum, _more linear than class A_ - as well as, like you say, more efficient than class B. (And no, it's not more expensive anymore either.)The reason class A/B can nevertheless make sense is precisely that it's _less_ linear, and that (unlike in class B and D) the nonlinearity is musically useful. A solid-state A/B is nowhere near as good as a valve A/B in that regard, but I reckon it does couple to the speaker in a way that may make it sound better. This interaction can also blow out the speakers though, which is why live engineers learn never push a solid-state A/B amp over its limits. Therefore I suspect that Katana doesn't actually use the power stage's nonlinearity at all and instead simulates it digitally, which makes me wonder if it would actually sound any different with a class D power stage...

    All that talk of crossover distortion and you didn't mention or show how class A eliminates crossover by boosting the signal so much it NEVER crosses over the 0 point. That's why it's so inefficient -the entire sine wave is above the "off" point where the signal distorts.

    Hey Colin, I'm very curious what your professional take is on non-wound pickups like the Fishman Fluence design. I recall you aren't a fan of active pickups, but these seem like a different beast entirely. I always look forward to your insightful perspectives and would be really curious to hear what you think about the tech. Cheers!

    When it comes to comparisons, I like to find out first which one sounds better then after writing a song or two, I question the science that makes it sound better. If A/B or D doesn't change the sound, I'll move on and just forget about it. 😆

    Believe it or not, I played your channel through class AB Amp in my Pioneer SX-780 Receiver through minimus 7 speakers with great results. Unfortunately,my power packs in 780 are aftermarket crap replacing damaged or dead originals behaving as close class B. Keep volume up, they're good until you go low volume. I am considering attempting to mod my receiver to discreet components since there's no more decent power packs. I also have sx-880 with discreet components in class AB and sounds great.

    A/B is more linear and more expensive than Class D to build generally. Class D is more efficient but less Linear and less expensive generally to build.... There are Class A ultra linear but extremely inefficient. Class A/B, B, C, D, G, H and others.... Have to laugh though when they are using extreme limited bandwidth "Metal" as their example.

    This is old news and everything, but Class D amps are the way of the future. The kind of power and clean sound you can get from modern Class D amps make oldschool A and AB amps obsolete. Just in terms of packaging/efficiency. You can cram 3-5x more "clean" power output into a typically sized amplifier cab with Class D parts, compared to with standard A and AB components. A 600W AB cab could house a 2000W Class D board and have extra room for a bunch of other features like a built in DSP for recording or Wireless module for cable-less guitar hookup.

    My dad was a bit of an analog mad scientist. He built a 5 watt tube amp to power the radio in his office (WHY? we are still working on that one...). Not some special radio, like, the radio he listened to music on. It would warm the office, which was good, because it was in a drafty old house near Chicago, IL, where it's winter 7 months of the year. Terrible efficiency! (He also made a solid-body electric ukulele, and decided to put a Dimarzio Super 3 humbucker in it. Any other pickup would have made more sense, but he thought that was funny...MAD SCIENTIST.)

    *_Class 'D' amplifiers sound dimensionally flat and therefore tragically flawed... Solid-state 'class A B' are marginally better, but still, lack life, soul, call it what you will, but it's like watching black & white TV as apposed to, color... So, now we come full circle, where we have to admit (unless you were born deaf) that single-ended class 'A' amplifier sound better, period... Which means they had it right in the fifties, so for those who can tell the difference it's 'Back to the Future,'_*

    As a bass player I was seduced by a 600W class D amp that weighs 3kg, over my old faithful valve monster with a mere 100W that needs a small team to lift it. I know valve watts are more powerful than solid state watts, but how the flying fuck is 100W louder than 600? On the other hand - on a pub gig I can now run a profit, and I'm a mercenary bastard, now with good back health. But a poorer soul.

    Katana is 100w peak, not rms and definitely not loud enough for much more than the bedroom. You'd kill it gigging or jamming with it, it'd be clipping it's head off. I was impressed with the demo, but useless rubbish unfortunately.

  • @AT-wl9yq

    With guitar amps, the class of the amp isn't that big of a deal. Its really about tubes vs solid state. There are 2 main reasons why solid state amps have trouble keeping up with tubes. A tube amp distorts when you turn the gain up on the input until the tubes can't maintain a clean sound any longer. The more you increase the gain, the harder the tubes are overdriven, and that's where your tube sound comes from. This is extremely difficult to replicate on a transistor amp. Especially when it comes to feel. For example, you can set the sound of your tube amp up so that when you are playing light on the strings, you get a clean sound. When you start to play heavy, that will force the tubes to overdrive and you lose your clean signal. Again, its extremely difficult to replicate that type of sound with a solid state amp.
    There's also one other big problem. Tubes and transistors distort differently, and the sounds they make when they distort is completely different. When tubes distort, 2nd order harmonics are generated. This type of distortion tends to be pleasing to the ear. Its sounds good. When transistors clip, they produce odd order harmonics. This doesn't sound good at all. Odd order harmonics are the last thing you want to hear coming from an amp.
    This is why change has been so slow. The challenges solid state designers are facing are huge. Everything is working against them. Its incredible that they have them sounding as good as they do. An incredible amount of works went into designing these newer solid state amps.
    One last thing. Class D amps are not digital. Ever. Some class D amps employ digital technology, but regardless, the signal you hear is analog from input to output, and is never converted to digital. Some class D amps tap off the analog signal coming into the amp, convert it to digital, and use that data stream to turn the transistors on and off. But the amp itself is still analog.

    I spent 2 weeks with the Katana artist.
    Let be truthful, and strait.
    The Katana does not sound like a good tube amp.
    I play metal. I use a 5153 2x12, and Boogie 2c+ head, so that is my reference tone.
    The Katana is good for fucking around on ,but it does not come even close to having the presence, and the girth if a good amp.
    For a kid with no money, this amp is a god-send.
    Great for a ss amp, but it is a ss amp.
    As a side note.... companys that put "attenuators" on ss amps really bother me.
    The way you attenuate a ss amp, is to turn the volume down.
    Unless they have somehow developed on output transformer that thinks it is being fed by output tubes, which they haven't, its just another fake selling point, made to fool uneducated people, and making themselves look like fools in the mean time.
    People love to argue about this, they are just wrong.
    Even the attenuator on my EVH is fake.
    It lowers the pre amp signal before it gets handed off to the output stage, instead of taking the powered output signal, and converting unwanted electrical energy into heat.
    Just my 2 cents.
    Good video.

    Hmmm...still not sure about this type of amp. The effects thrown in shouldn’t be ignored, otherwise it’s a waste of money. My experience with modelling amps is that they can be very sketchy, &, you spend more time trying to get a decent sound rather than playing!

    Just sayin'... I've got a Katana 50 and a digitech multi-fx. I put the amp selector to acoustic by accident and it sounds gr8 with pre distortion/modulation. Back off bass and treb and boost mid a bit and it's a killer sound. The valve type distortion in Clean mode is gone and it is super responsive to dynamics without saturating.
