I think I like Spencer's cleans just a little bit more, though Casey has a sort of Post-Hardcore "grit" to his voice that I like a lot. His harsh vox here are untouchable, though; so sick.
Here's an odd one - I like that Casey leaves those gnarly breathes on the track and others. Seems to be a style choice for him. It's violent and adds a ton of character to the performance.
This version really inspired me to evolve from doing mostly clean vocals (SymX) to heavy screams like Casey Sabol... and I just uploaded my own cover of this song going for a more Sabol style version actually not too far from it.. let me know what I do good and bad thanks!
spencer sotelo is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Reptile in my opinion is one of the best tracks vocally in all of metal. I couldn’t be more glad periphery took him on. This is casey’s song through and through though. Spencer’s version doesn’t come close to this
His harsh vocals here destroy Spencer's haha. Don't get me wrong, I think Spencer is an amazing singer, but they have different strengths. Spencer has a more treble-y voice. Casey has a bit more warmth and what sounds more like relaxed technique to me. Although I feel like Spencer has gotten way better since he's recorded his version of Icarus Lives.
+eveningninja Honestly, I think all of Casey's recorded stuff is superior to Chris' and Spencer's stuff. The band said that Casey couldn't do shit live though, and Spencer definitely can.
For this song at least Casey was definitely a better vocalist, but I think Spencer pushed ahead on their new album... Tbh, I kinda wanna hear them re-record this now that Spencer got so much better
Tbh this guy is good too but imo no way is he better than even p1 Spencer. I think Chris has some moments where I like his voice more than p1 sponce but I think p2 and after, Spencer just crushes all competition
I love Spencer, and Casey for different reasons... but Casey is never content with one genre. I have been friends with him since lower school and it blows my mind how many different musical iterations of himself he's created. Metal should have been his niche, but last I saw he was doing county :(
@markpriss This one was written by Casey. Some of the songs were written by Casey like Icarus and Light while others were written by Chris Baretto and others were written by Spencer. Misha altered the instrumentals and some of the vocals were changed when Spencer joined for the final recordings but not by much.
Was this Travis Orbin on drums? I think that's why there's all those tasty ghosties on the snare. Matt Halpern is the man, but Travis does some incredible work behind the kit ❤
I actually like Spencer's scream a little more, when it comes to Periphery's music. It fits better, but there are some times where it could be a little more extreme like Casey's.
Casey had tracked all of the first album I believe, and then he left, so when Spencer joined, instead of having him rewrite the entire album, they just used the old lyrics from the songs.
you're right lol, i think i posted that before hearing make total destroy. i like how they focus more on vocals now, but i also miss how much they used to focus on the instruments. i'm glad i like to sing, otherwise i'd be disappointed x)
@markpriss Casey wrote Icarus Lives and Inertia, and the end of Insomnia, all of the "i" songs, lol. Chris Baretto did the Walk, and I think Bulb and Tom wrote a lot of the other songs before Spencer arrived and improved on their ideas.
holy crap, I like Casey Sabol's voice better than Spencer's. he can hit all the high notes that Spencer can, but he still sounds like a man XD and I can actually understand all the words from his uncleans. this guy is friggin' insane :)
+Kelsey Luo Haha seriously. I don't like how thin and whiny/treble-y Spencer's voice gets when he goes up high. Casey has a more full-sounding voice for sure.
+Kelsey Luo Yeah. He should have stayed. He moved away from metal and started doing some shitty rock project now though or at least he was last time I heard.
+evening ninja Spencer sings in his chest voice as where you can clearly tell Casey sings in his head voice for the high notes. Casey can't seem to hold a note without shaking. Spencer imo has a better voice and suits Periphery better.
***** I think you'll find most periphery fans agree that Spencer has gotten a lot better since the time that he recorded Icarus Lives. If you're talking about current day Spencer I would have to say he's pretty great, but I'd say Casey did Icarus Lives better. Also, theres nothing wrong with head voice, a skilled vocalist makes use of all his resonances and doesn't push his chest voice when it's going to make it sound really thin.
evening ninja Well yeah current day Spence is godly but even when he was weaker I still feel like he was a stronger singer than Casey was on Icaurs Lives.
Ok. The drums weren't programed on Periphery I or II. Why do you think they have matt halpern. Even if it's recorded on an electric kit, that doesn't means it's all programed.
i used to like spencers scream more, now i can respect casey's more because it's much more of a scream. spencer uses some technique that doesn't mess with his clean vocals, which i can also respect. now periphery is mostly clean vocals, probably because spencer doesn't want to scream like casey does and damage his clean voice
I think spencer is overall a more impressive vocalisf and a better fir for periphery, but there is something special about caseys voice that I cant get enough of.
aaahhh this is the version of the song I have! All the other videos of Icarus Lives are different than this. This is the better version for sure (at least on drums)
I personally love caseys vocals... It suits the music well, the new singer I couldnt get into I think cause I was to casey. Lets all wait for the new stuff
Casey's probably better, on this song anyway. But I like this version much better because of the guitar tones. And Travis' drumming is godlike. So much better than the newer one
Spencer definitely has a greater range but there's something about Casey's vocals. I find them to be more emotive, not to mention his harsh vocals are better than Spencer's.
On the contrary, I heard the album version first, but I personally prefer this version. Although Spencer's definitely improved a lot, I like Casey's style better.
Haha wrong again. The first set of vocals were done by Jake Veredika. They're different lyrics, it's more like Meshuggah's style. Pretty sure you can find it if you seach on youtube.
I love Casey’s voice better than Spencer‘s any day anytime I feel like Spencer should go sit on the bench for a little bit and let Casey redo all the songs just for the fans who love Casey’s voice
I like Caseys harsh vox much more than Spencers. Not that standard-metalcore-mid-pitch-thing. But I do like Spencers Clean vox as much as I like Caseys.
Love casey's voice but seeing what periphery has become, it just sounds like he didnt really get what they were all about or what they could be. I hope to god he has success in one of his projects though. Voice of a fucking angel who can also scream. Deserves a breakthrough
The best version in my opinion. I heard this the day they posted it online and was baffled it didnt work out with Casey. I love youtube
All the ghost notes
I think I like Spencer's cleans just a little bit more, though Casey has a sort of Post-Hardcore "grit" to his voice that I like a lot. His harsh vox here are untouchable, though; so sick.
This is the best version by far.
Here's an odd one - I like that Casey leaves those gnarly breathes on the track and others. Seems to be a style choice for him. It's violent and adds a ton of character to the performance.
Spencer also does that in later albums. Stranger Things is the perfect example. Follow Your Ghost is a more recent one.
It's a great effect.
I like the way Spencer runs “gravityisjustalawI’vewroughtblegh” all together
God damn best periphery song by far. Expecially with this guy!
Wow man. I've been looking for this version forever. This is the first one I heard a few years back.
The drums on this version do seem so much better! Like the sixteenth note triplet on the snare at the beginning at the end of the phrase
They are MIDI drums
@@MannyMo_ yeah the same concept still applies, what’s your point? Lol
@@MannyMo_ pretty sure this was with Travis Orbin

You should check out the stem he has he sounds so much better on that version compared to when the song was first released
eh idk i rly love spencer on p1
You have to revisit these every so often. ❤
I still think Jake's version is the best
Well fk idk after listening to it again after years this one might be it ngl

Hey dude Tom Murphy was the best periphery vocalist by far.
+Riley Tucker Pretty sure this is Superior 2.0, not Travis. Travis is amazing though.
+eveningninja Honestly, I think all of Casey's recorded stuff is superior to Chris' and Spencer's stuff. The band said that Casey couldn't do shit live though, and Spencer definitely can.
Spencer also improved over the years from P1 to p4 its incredible
Casey sounds like Peter Gabriel when he sings “besieged by!”
Damn it, I love when people are not comparing musicians... You have my 'upvote'! :D
For this song at least Casey was definitely a better vocalist, but I think Spencer pushed ahead on their new album... Tbh, I kinda wanna hear them re-record this now that Spencer got so much better
I love the little laugh he does about halfway through
i can't tell who i prefer more! both spence and casey are freaking amazing
i agree spence has come over 100fold i was blown away when i heard the new album
If spencer redid this now, I think spencers would be way better.
This version is legendary though.
Tbh this guy is good too but imo no way is he better than even p1 Spencer. I think Chris has some moments where I like his voice more than p1 sponce but I think p2 and after, Spencer just crushes all competition
Everyone talking aboit the vocals, but the drums and guitars are so much better in this version!
Casey's vocals
It's 2019 and I like this more than Spencer's version.

Great vocals Casey. !!

So Casey wrote the lyrics for this song? Never knew that
Casey also wrote the final sections of insomnia
+2JZ-GTE And Travis Orbin on the drums, check his youtube - does a few old school Periphery playalongs
Casey had tracked all of the first album I believe, and then he left, so when Spencer joined, instead of having him rewrite the entire album, they just used the old lyrics from the songs.
Literally dying right now xD That's by far the best comment i've seen in months xD
@Osskarii The "freaky" stuff you hear in The Walk and Light are Chris Barretto. Chris recorded those two
OMG THIS IS SO GOOD!!!! Get Travis and Casey back PLEASE
you're right lol, i think i posted that before hearing make total destroy. i like how they focus more on vocals now, but i also miss how much they used to focus on the instruments. i'm glad i like to sing, otherwise i'd be disappointed x)

I believe he recorded onto superior with an electric kit, had Misha change it around then recorded the final versions with Misha's changes.
Casey's vocals were by far the best for this band, wish he woulda stayed.

When I watch these videos I feel like the only person who prefers Spencer to the old singers. These are pretty sweet though.
ehh caseys cleans sound like hes in a boy band
This is the version with Travis Orbin on drums. Just pointing out the semi-obvious.
@TobyPointer666 Misha is "Bulb" he writes almost everything in Periphery
They're programmed in the self titled too. And on This Time It's Personal (Periphery II)
Exactly, I think that is so cool
Actually they did. Look for the version on the Icarus EP.

I liked the periphery with casey sabol (manly vocals) and orbo.
different but cool

I prefer Casey's vocal track over Spencer's. But I appreciate Spencer's just as much.
i prefer Spencer's clean singing & Casey's growl/screaming

His screams are way better, but so are Spencer's now.
