I just love Jimmy when he's real, authentic, and makes himself vulnerable. When he shares his true heart/ self/ feelings, that's when what he says resonates with me the most. It lets me get to know him better as a person, and it's relatable.
These moments in where he truly shares the insight from his self-reflection/ self-examination serve as a great reminder for me that we're just human. No one does it "perfectly." We make mistakes. I respect that he owns up to his, and apologizes sincerely. I think that's all that we can ask - that a person takes accountability, apologizes, and commits to not doing it again!

"We all are born flawed, but flawed is part of the journey we are on." Amazing, also "unwilling to grow and learn", gosh, yessssss, it's so important, humility is so important. To me, keeping in mind that *not harming others* is my main and, pretty much, only condition to be more or less sure of actions, is enough to guide me. If I screw up, I will look at what I did, where it came from, look at myself, and try my best to grow from there. But when your intention is good and you're willing to learn, taking a false step is better than standing still. That's what I believe, at least, and we all know how relative the notion of "good" can be, but..

I can stand up and say I never made a racist mistake, as far as I'm aware. This idiocy of feeling guilt without doing anything wrong needs to stop. I'm even convinced Jimmy Fallon here is joking. He's ridiculing the people who support this so called progressive message in their face. Any sane human can see his blackface performance was comedy, there was no racist intention and his current cry for sympathy is more childish than a three year old who accidently poured icecream all over his napkin. He's a hidden republican.
(Personally I study Asian culture on a daily basis and I frankly don't feel like I am racist in any way. I'm interested in other cultures and show my respect. There's no need to put blame on anyone simply because they're white.)

It's not socially acceptable now so if the sketch was made now I'd be pissed. It was made a long ass time ago, before the movie white chicks was made. This is racism ... The millions of white children born into poverty with drug addict parents ... show me there privilege compared to middle class black children. Understand this is not a race issue. Also 77% of black children live in single parent households, look at the statistics 2 parent households are twice as likely to purchase property and acquire wealth. I realise the prison system is fucked and takes away fathers however this may be 1% at the absolute most. 76% of black fathers abandon their children. @@matttcurry1429 😢 It's because this is not about Dave chapelle its about Jimmy Fallon. You need to take a little more time, (besides making an easy comment on YT,) to track down Mr. Chapelle and ask HIM that- if that's how you choose to use your time. There are lots of reasons all of us do things.
_"What-Aboutism"_ can go on forever, I can do it too but I'm not into that very much. It solves nothing except to keep the status quo. The status quo is immoral, cruel, offends the God I worship, blames the victims, is indefensible and not debatable. Did you miss the point of what Jimmy said and not see the genuine anguish in his eyes?
I know something has you upset, but please try to do what Jimmy did and think a little deeper. We all, or most of us, are doing that right now even if we've had a life time of trying to figure it out. There is always more improvement for all of us. It can hurt to go deep inside. Do a few hours googling on "American reconstruction"
      "Emmitt Till" , "Jim Crow",
"Voter poll taxes in 1950 America", "American slaves 3/5 persons?", "Tamir Rice", "minstrel shows", " Memphis sanitary workers strike 1968"---- this list can go down to hell and back 400 times. It tears my heart out my whole life to keep learning more, a bottomless pit, but change only comes by educating the majority and powerful. I'm pretty poor *but I'm powerful just because of the color of my skin.* I was born powerful and so were you.
Too many things to research? Then I ask you just look up Emmitt Till and pretend for a moment that was some white child you dearly loved. _Really look at his face._ White men did that after kidnapping him. For me, I think I can ponder a few reasons Mr. Chapelle might choose to use 'whiteface'. But that's just me. Go debate him. All I ask, from one white person to another, is go deeper inside yourself. If you still feel as you do then that's how it will be for you.

I was happy and excited. Then I noticed a couple of women nearby talking to each other in loud whispers about the black man who was talking to me. I didn’t understand what they were saying. Black man? I looked and looked, but I just didn’t get what they were talking about. When we all got on the bus I kept trying to figure it out, and then it dawned on me. The kind man who gave me the coin had darker skin than me. Not black, but brown. But I figured that’s what they meant by black man. Until that moment, I never saw any difference in anyone’s skin color. And I had already lived in different countries where people came in all shapes and colors. It was really wierd to become aware of skin color and realize that it meant something (negative, in this case) to these women. Wierd and sad.

Colorism has been indoctrinated into the American psyche since this nation's inception. We all have been affected by it. We don't realize how much until it is exposed to us, often through some type of confrontation. As long as a blind man is surrounded by blind men, then he thinks his condition is not only normal but the unspoken ideal. It isn't until he is confronted with someone having sight, that he could even begin to fathom that his condition is abnormal and that not only is it abnormal but it is reversible. Some of the "blind", are too ashamed and will allow their pride to dig themselves deeper into denial and darkness, refusing to implement change because their identity has been based solely on their "blindness". And if they stop being blind then they don't know who to be. But there are those that crave the light. They get a taste of what it's like to see and they won't settle for anything less than full illumination. They are willing to not only examine themselves but implement the necessary changes because what good is a diagnosis and a prognosis if you aren't going to take the medicine that kills the disease...My prayer is that you remain consistent and persistent in your desire to change and grow. You may fall but that doesn't mean you quit. As you remain consistent, you will learn a new way while simultaneously uprooting white supremacist propaganda. And as you do this you are rewritting the script for future generations. God bless you.

This is exactly correct. I oppose racism, but I have long recognized that I am a subconscious racist, and that I need always to work to make sure that I do not carelessly say or do racist things. I can remember things that I've said or done in the past that I am very sorry for, things that have taught me lessons that have helped me to avoid making similar mistakes later on. But even today, and I've been around for a long time, I understand that I must always be aware of my own subconscious racism so that I do not say or do things that can hurt people.
This is the one thing that I disagreed with in Jimmy Fallon's comments. He said "I am not a racist", and of course he does oppose racism. But it is easier to avoid making mistakes if we recognize that we are all racists, at least subconsciously, and have to exercise constant vigilance.

Carolyn Corbin I was brought up in a diverse community. I have always talked about different cultures, different color to my children. The first baby doll my daughter had was a black baby. Which she was teased for it. I always stood up to anyone trying to change my children’s choice of friends of color. In my home we had books addressing diversity. Some of the schools don’t even teach diversity in the classrooms. I housed teenagers of color that were homeless and they lived with my family until they got on their feet. I have had people say nasty things to me about it, I wasn’t going to let anyone get to me. I have family who are married to men of color. Some people say the wrong things and Jimmy made a mistake in the past and so did many comedians who didn’t always write their own skits, they poked fun about this. I believe people are human and make mistakes they should be adult enough to apologize. Jimmy did this, its important that we have this talk and listen to how we can change what is happening in the world. And not say Oh all white people are racist. I don’t mean anything by saying this, I hear this all the time from people. It’s almost like turning our backs and saying that’s the way it is. It needs to stop that is for sure. I think now a change is happening around the world and making us all come together. Thank you for your comment

tacy quartermaine , completely agree with you and felt his “apology “ was weak and didn’t really feel like an apology but an excuse for his behavior. He is always extremely critical of anyone in the public eye who makes mistakes, and harps on their mistakes. My grown children grew up in a diverse neighborhood and attended public schools, and we actually were unaware of people still experiencing racism. Maybe there are other families like mine, that are unaware because they also lived in diverse communities. I feel like a lot of these celebrities talk a big talk, but don’t practice what they preach. You have a point here. These celebrities need to practice what they preach by employing more diverse people, and giving them equal opportunities and pay.

It means a whole lot for Jimmy Fallon to express himself and admit his mistake of what he did on SNL, that one time. And it also meant a lot for Derrick to come forward to express his thoughts on Fallon's opening monologue. It was needed and it was powerful. People really need to look into Fallon's eyes and understand that he was indeed sorry for what he has done and even though that was only 20 years ago, it was best to express it today and understand that it was wrong and still is wrong to portray someone who is black. Fallon should be thankful for what he did and so should Derrick, on how he should see everyone come together and express themselves on what the next steps are, for this country and during these very unsafe and uncertain times.

Thank you for recognizing the issue and apologized. We need more people to dig deep and own up to their mistakes, it’s one step to move forward

We love you, Jimmy. I’m so glad that you’ve taken what could have been a set back and used it to grow, to lead, and to use your position as an entertainer to support an anti-racism movement across the country! I hate that our country is suffering and experiencing so much pain right now, but this is an opportunity to rise. Thank you, Derrick, for these tips on how to be a better ally. I’ll be joining the NAACP.

That was incredibly courageous, Jimmy. You have such a big heart. I am so grateful to you for all these years of Love and Laughter. You have helped get me out of a bad funk many many times. It has been such a joy to see you at home and meet your family as well. It is true, we could all do better. (me included) Much better. Thank you. Namaste

I dig the fact he pursued powerful voices in the black community for his band and his guests.
Guys like Common and the Roots, from distinct cities like Chicago and Philadelphia.
Hell, his love just for those guys is actually obvious.
I definitely respect Jimmy for facing his past.
