    Poor Emily. They would've really benefited from some family therapy early on.

      @deez she obviously wants so badly to connect, especially when she sees Lorelai and Rory's relationship. But she doesn’t know how. She doesn't know how to relinquish control and let go. She was raised a certain way and people like that don't change easily. That's why I feel bad for her. I didn't mean she's a great person or not at fault. She deserves pity for being unable to let go of the past hurt between her and Lorelai, for being rigid. A therapist could've helped with all of that.

    I think what Emily and Richard really wanted was for Lorelei to just take accountability of her actions and apologise for putting them through the pain and everything, which she never did. She always said she had to do what she had to do to be sane but never really thought about who is getting hurt in those decisions

      @@lauriecarson6483 She loves them in the way she knows best- provision-based perhaps, but it IS love. She DOES care- you can see it in her heartbreak the moments scattered through the series where she sees where she's failed to connect and/or doesn't know her daughter and/or grand daughter like she thought or feels she should.
      She DOES love them, and yes, she does struggle to relate and display it in what "normal" people would call sensible/logical ways... but remember she's from an entirely different type of society and culture of supremely wealthy- she DID try to show them love. She doesn't understand them, not even in the slightest sometimes, but that is not the same as saying she doesn't love them.
      And her "funny" ways of showing it... like what, using any means she can to ensure she has time spent with them weekly? By giving Rory a place to be when she and her mother are on the outs? By trying to be involved and even getting out of her comfort zone to see their town and "quaint town" life?
      She wants the best for them- what SHE sees as best, sure, but she wants best for them nonetheless. They conflict on that, what "best" is... but never on "does she love us".

    • @nintendozo
      @nintendozo 2 года назад +13

      @@brandoncherry8713 I agree. Emily wasn't a bad parent. It's normal for a teenager to be resentful of over-controlling parents, but Lorelai is almost 40. Lorelai had everything. Whereas in the episodes where Rory gets anything from her grandparents, it's a big deal that both Rory and Lorelai are appreciative of it. It seems Lorelai took it all for granted and maybe Emily just reminded her of that too often.

      @@brandoncherry8713 I think there’s plenty of evidence for her atrocious parenting even when Lorelai is an adult. I agree she loved her daughter and did her best, but she wasn’t just controlling she was emotionally manipulative and abusive. It’s no wonder Lorelai is afraid to tell her anything because she doesn’t trust her mother to respect her boundaries. There were good moments as well and Emily does learn to do better over time of the show, but she was really bad. Not that she would have resources to know better at the time and yes she did her best and loved her family.
      Lorelai is also an example or overcompensating for Emily style of parenting and becoming a bad parent in a completely different way. She made Rory grow up too fast and basically expected her daughter to be her emotional support. This family dynamic shows different styles of parenting and what can go wrong with these 2 polar opposites. And at the same it doesn’t demonize people involved who do their best and love their children even if all of them would greatly benefit from therapy at the end of the day 😅.

    We can see that nobody from lorelei's world is happy or loves their parents. The only thing keeping the relationship alive is money. But for Lorelei, money wasn't enough so she left. That says a lot about her character. Lorelei is stubborn and annoying, but Richard and Emily could've done better.

    • @madisonbusby1457
      @madisonbusby1457 Год назад +9

      I wouldn’t say Lorelei was annoying - money doesn’t always make someone happy and that was clear with Lorelei. She was clearly happier starting with nothing and building up- she couldn’t do that living with her parents so she left but her parents always resented her for that and so there was that tension between them and so she hated asking them for help because she knew they would tell her “I told you so”

    I think it's irritating that Lorelai always acts like a victim when she was given everything. Lorelai's response is usually "Well, I didn't ask for any of it" but has no qualms with pushing Rory toward the same path that Emily SO wanted for her daughter.
    While Emily couldn't relate to Lorelai's emotions, Lorelai's is on the opposite spectrum; she relates to Rory emotionally because she is extremely immature she acts like a teenager.

      yes she can sometimes be controlling (like any other mom) but only because she thinks it’s for the best and want her daughter to have everything
      many would give EVERYTHING to have mom like that, and she is the one who acts like a victim while judging everyone who is in emily’s circle

      She wasn’t given everything. She may have had all her physical needs met and been given prestigious opportunities but she was emotionally neglected. Emily and Richard were toxic and manipulative people and are shown to continue to be throughout the show. Of course Lorelei as a mother would try to give her daughter all those same wonderful opportunities, but Lorelai also tried to make sure her daughter felt loved, understood, and supported-something she never received growing up.

    • @nintendozo
      @nintendozo 2 года назад +1

      @@lauriecarson6483 I agree Emily isn't the best parent. She's controlling and stubborn, but I would say Lorelai's string of men coming in and out of Rory's life to the point that Rory tells her own father to get away to not deal with the emotional pain of it not working out; is just as toxic as an old lady from a completely different background bickering over trivial things (that are important to her). Having parents from a wealthy and older generation that can't relate as well to their child as a teen mom would with her teenage daughter, is pretty typical I would say. I can't remember Richard doing anything that traumatic either so I guess I don't see it.
