    This is honestly one of, if not my favorite, Star Wars film. Unlike the sequels, it felt so in line with Star Wars while adding it's own originality; the darker side of the Rebellion, the things people would do for their freedom, and the sacrifice that went into giving the Rebellion a chance to survive against all odds. Plus, Vader's hallway scene just screams Sith Lord badassery.

      I agree fully my friend, showing the rebellion not being scared to get their hands dirty was a genius move in my opinion. That “feel” you reference is the thing that separates Star Wars from other sci-fi and good Star Wars from bad Star Wars: it’s a certain “grittiness”, building, ships, and characters feel a bit dirty, a bit worn. The technology is simultaneously advanced, but anachronistic. Ships can travel at light speed, but the controls still use buttons and switches, the structures are powerfully massive but covered in grime, the people all feel like they’ve been through some shit. All of this adds a certain weight, that makes Star Wars feel like Star Wars when done properly, at least in live action. Then there’s the music, which should always strive to reach the level John Williams established
    Also, this movie was done by Garth Edwards, a Brit

      I am not knocking Solo as it had it's fun parts but for me Rogue One seemed to have 'that feel' that distinguishes it from other movies. I have non point in question when I'm talking about the sequels as I have not seem them yet, but from what I have heard, they lost their way.

    • @chand911
      @chand911 2 года назад +2

      I don't think it requires grittiness. Solo was gritty and didn't feel like Star Wars. The prequels were shiny and still Star Wars. It's the stories you tell, not the look.

    So this takes place one week before the first scene in A NEW HOPE. The opening crawl refers directly to this story as it reads:
    "It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy…."
    It was known that these rebels lost their lives retrieving the plans so it was one of those inevitable outcomes which is so sad because I really loved the character of Jen.

    Then tried to lie about it to Vader.

    Love this movie! Here's a couple of fun facts:
    You can watch Episode IV directly after Rouge One, the ending of the movie runs flush with the Opening for a New Hope
    One of the X-Wings shot down by Tie Fighters had the all sign Red 5, Luke was given the Call Sign Red 5 in a New Hope,
    The Director of Rouge One wanted many of the cast to have mustaches and mullets to give the movie a 70's vibe to match the Time Era from when Episode IV was filmed
    The Black troopers at the Beginning are called Death Troopers, elite stormtroopers and often seen as personal guards to high ranking imperial officers, like Director Krennic, the Tan Troopers on Scaif are know as either Shoretroopers or Scarif Stormtroopers, they specialized in costal environments
    The person who raised Princess Leia was Senator Bail Organa, he died Episode IV when Tarkin Blew Up Alderaan, what makes this really messed up is that Tarkin Made Leia Watch her only "family" and the rest of her people died right in front of her.
    The people we see Jyn and Cassian run into in Jeddha City were the same 2 bothering Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode IV, he even says the same line "You better watch yourself" before being told by both Luke and Cassian in both scenarios that "they don't want any trouble"
    On the set of a New Hope, Peter Cushing didn't want to wear his black boots with his imperial officer suit, so he wore his comfy slippers on set, hence why we don't see his Tarkins feet in Episode IV
    The Tank Vader was in is called a Bacta Tank, that Bacta tank is filled with Bacta (hence the name) Bacta has immense healing properties, hence why Vader uses it to relieve the pain from the injuries he sustained in Episode III. Since Palpatine specifically wanted the Suit for Vader to inflict as much pain as possible on Vader, both as a punishment for loosing to Kenobi, and so Vader wouldn't be able to think properly, and to have the searing pain keep him awake and angry from the pain and iching. Meaning that the only times he gets to "relax" somewhat pain free is in his meditation chamber like we see in Episode V and him floating in a tank just as a torso, no arms and no legs, thinking about all the mistakes he made leading up to the death of Padme. Poor Ani...

    This is probably my favorite Star Wars. I went to see it at the midnight premier and I very distinctly remember going in thinking, "I hope we see Vader just fully unleashed," and thankfully we saw that! Vader only has 34 minutes of screen time in the movies and he's one of the most iconic villains of all time. To really see him be absolutely horrifyingly powerful for the first time was amazing.
    I'll also add that seeing this movie really changes the way you watch A New Hope. Idk, in the end it was really refreshing because they brought in a ton of deep lore stuff like Kyber Crystals and they really understand the force. My main complaint of the Disney era is that they don't fully understand the Force in the way that Yoda and Obi describe it in Episode 4&5. This one gets it though.

    What i found interesting about this movie is how it shows the more...relentless side of the rebellion. Yes the rebels are the "good guys" but they also weren't afraid to kill. It wasn't so black and white. They dealt in the gray area a lot and did things which would be considered "not morally sound". Cassian killing the guy with the broken arm was an example. Them plotting to kill Galen Erso. I guess it shows the very vulnerable, sometimes not morally right side of the rebellion. Ends justify the means type of outlook. When you consider the evil ruling the whole galaxy, its easy to understand why though

    • @SofaandChill
      @SofaandChill  2 года назад

      Yeah that was definitely one of the things that stood out for me. The resistance were not so clean and squeaky as they made themselves out to be. Cassian was more than happy to get his hands dirty for the cause

  • @TheOtherGuys2
    @TheOtherGuys2 2 года назад

    Something I recently realized about Rogue One is how it does a dynamic twisting paradigm shift and you don't even notice it.
    During the scene on Eadu, the stormy planet with the Imperial scientists, Jyn climbs the ladder to reach her father. He's the only one she cares about, she's only on this mission so that she can find him, because he's the one person she's emotionally connected to. And then, the bomb goes off. She and her father have time for no more than a few last words before he dies. Cassian pulls her up, shouting "We've got to go, now!" For Jyn, the one she cared about is gone, but the fight that he died for rages on around her. And now that fight, his fight, has become her fight.
    Suddenly the Rebellion is real for her. The next thing you know, she's the one trying to convince everyone to launch the attack on Scarif. She's gone from "It's not a problem if you don't look up." to "The question is what choice do we have?" Cassian agrees. "I couldn't face myself if I gave up now." So they go to Scarif. And as the fight goes on, one by one all the characters we've come to love and care about die, until it's only Jyn and Cassian left. Sitting on the beach with the blast from the Death Star looming, they have time for no more than a few last words before they die. Then the movie pulls us up, back into space where the Rebel trooper shouts "We've got to go, now!" For us, the audience, the ones we cared about are gone, but the fight they died for rages on around us. And now that fight, their fight, has become our fight.
    And that's why you leave this movie feeling so pumped up.

    The hallway scene was one of the best examples of a dark side badass being a dark side badass. I wasn't initially a fan of this movie, because when Disney took over Star Wars, they made everything that wasn't the original 6 movies non canon, erasing an already established story about how the rebels got the Death Star plans. If you can find it, I'd highly recommend listening to the audiobook series "Star Wars Dark Forces" trilogy. May not be canon anymore, but it's still a ton of fun. Fully voice acted with special effect sounds, just a ton of fun.

    In my opinion, the trouble with the sequels is not that it doesn't feel like Star Wars. It does. It's just that they had no plan. In ep 7, the story and the characters arcs take you to place A. Then in ep 8, they take you to place B, kind of ignoring some of the set up to further place A. Then, bc of backlash, in ep 9, they just took it to place 43. It's not even in the alphabet anymore.

    The actress who plays Mon Mothma here was cast in Revenge of the Sith and filmed several deleted scenes about the very beginnings of the Rebellion (with Bail, Padme and a few other Senators)...so it's really exciting they brought her back, and she'll also be in a future show about Cassian. Rogue One does have a good shot at being my favourite StarWars movie (honestly it probably was what kept me a StarWars fan when the Rian Johnston movie and it's sequel came out), I love how it makes the Rebellion a bit dirty, a bit nasty. It's always fun to see when people work out that nobody is coming out alive from it though (for me I went into the movie thinking "They should kill everyone off, but they won't have the balls." and it was only after Chiruut died that I was like "Oh are they actually going to do it!?"). But my absolute fan moment went to Red and Gold Leader coming back from B-reel footage from the original film.
    I'm looking forwards to your reactions to the Clone Wars, just remember that the first seasons are the worst, and it gets better as you go forwards.

    Director Gareth Edwards was a fan of the Star Wars universe, and Rogue One maintains the "feel" of the universe George Lucas created. Characters well defined, as in the 1977 original, and this movie acts as a stepping stone between Episode III and IV. A more "adult" feel, if such a thing is possible, what with the raid on the beach, and I felt the thrill of watching Star Wars back in 1977 as the Battle of Scarif, in space and on the ground, started!
    Anakin is buried, well and truly, now, and Vader is truly the Emperor's servant, slaughtering the rebel soldiers with ease just before the end.Happy that you enjoyed the movie, May the Force be with you!

      @SofaandChill  2 года назад +1

      Hi Steve, yeah such a great yet brutal scene, watching Vader cut his way through the rebel soldiers with ease was a tough watch. Loved Rogue One and you are right what you say, it definitely had that Star Wars "feel" to it!

    Oh, here we go! Been waiting for this one! And you know how I roll.... comment edited as we go!
    Also, I'll be in the live chat.... but just random comments there.
    Those are Death Troopers. The "Elite" Stormtroopers.
    Saw Guerrera(I can never spell that right, dammit). He was trusted to raise Jynn in the event Galen was ever tracked down.
    Cassian HAD to kill his informant. He was trapped, and would have spilled everything once the Empire got ahold of him.
    You've noticed the characters(and same actors) as Episode III.
    You'll learn more about Saw when you get around to watching Clone Wars and Rebels.
    Saw is an extremist.
    About that slap... When filmed, the actor playing K2SO actually accidentally connected with it. If you look close, Cassian actually covered his face, to cover up the smile he had. He thought it was funny. It made it into the final cut.
    Saw HAD to stay there. He couldn't move fast, was too heavy to carry... waiting for him would have killed them all.
    Remember that line: "I am one with The Force, and The Force is with me..."
    That Vader scene at the end almost didn't happen. It wasn't in the original script. The movie was in post production when the idea came about. It was approved, and some people were called back for "reshoots". Everyone literally lost their minds in theaters.

    I'm glad over years people have come around to seeing this as a great movie. Maybe some people have come around after everyone was disappointed by eps 8 and 9 and putting it in context but I still think it's great anyway. One big thing is the battle of Scarif, the huge space battle at the end was barely shown in any marketing and this was pushed as a movie that was not going to be as big as the main episodes, so we all assumed the end action sequence was going to be just the ground assault, and then everyone was surprised it had this huge space battle which rivals the Battle of Endor. The arrival of the Rebel Alliance with the rebel fanfare playing is still the best Star Wars moment since Return of the Jedi and absolutely captures the fun and energy that the sequels were lacking and didn't understand. Absolutely lost my shit when Gold Leader and Red Leader showed up because of course they'd be there but was damn cool. And then seeing Red Squadron do their thing with the shots mimicking the motion shots from Return of the Jedi.
    Vader(remember Darth is a title, Vader is his name) in the hallway was such a huge moment, we've only ever really been told and made to assume that Vader was this scary dude and this was him fulfilling it as a straight horror slasher villain, complete with the music and everything. And yes James Earl Jones did the voice again. Also Donnie Yen in Star Wars.
    Cool reaction dude. Becoming a Star Wars fan as you go.

  • @Scott_Burton
    @Scott_Burton 2 года назад

    Remember that we saw the basic frame of the Death Star constructed at the *end* of Episode III. this movie ends mere minutes, hours or at most days before the beginning of Episode IV. Luke and Leia were infants, toddlers if you assume a time jump of a couple years at the end of Ep III. So, ask yourself, how long has this been under construction... What were Luke and Leia at the beginning of Ep IV. late teen to mid 20s.
    To confirm the timeline, go back and look at the "You just watch yourself" moment at 11:00-11:05 in your reaction video, then go back to Ep IV and watch the Cantina scene for about a minute before someone loses an arm. You'll find very familiar faces and lines.
    "Sphere of Annihilation" ? (alternate name for the Death Star, name taken from a highly destructive magic item I first heard of in the AD&D [original edition] Dungeon Masters' Guide back around the time Episode V came out. But the name was already Canon [or even cannon] in the Star Wars Universe by then_
    Your comment about "you can't be a rebel, then get told off for being 'rebellious' " actually reflects a line dropped from the movie which appeared in a few places.
    I think it went like this, but I'm going on memory. "This is a rebellion? I rebel."

    I do like how they expose the Rebellion as not perfect. The first forms of dissent against the Empire in its early years were Separatist sympathizers from the Clone Wars and criminals who had gotten used to things being slack under the Republic, and were now facing strict justice under the Empire. It shows that neither side of a war is perfect.
    I'm not a fan of what Disney has done to Star Wars (with Rogue One being an exception) but I will say, giving Darth Vader a castle on Mustafar close to where he was burned was a pretty cool choice.

      I don’t think that’s true. I watched it as it was released and was never confused as to what was going on. Lots of shows jump back and forth in time, not everything has to be linear. It actually reminds me of a comic book where an issue comes out that sidetracks a bit to elaborate on a previous event or show what happened leading up to it from another point of view.
      Also, the first story arc that comes first chronologically isn’t all that interesting and compelling. It’s a generic action/adventure storyline that could almost have taken place at any point. Though the events of the theatrical movie occur later in the timeline, they’re a better introduction to the characters and style of the show. In my opinion.

    Glad to hear your gonna post CW in Arcs, the whole shows pretty much set up as a bunch of mini movies anyway so should make it go a lot faster for you and us lol. I will say Episode 7, the 1st sequel movie, did a decent job at hitting that Starwars vibe you were trying to describe at the end here, but 8 and 9 just didn't deliver on things set up by 7.. Rogue One is a superb movie. I have watched it several times. It maintains the level of The original 3. I love everything about it. Jin is a wonderful lead character. Leah's dad knowing war is coming anyway despite the vote to essentially surrender shows his wisdom. Some fantastic moments like Jin realising her dad planned to destroy the Empire from within (and the emotion of that discovery for her), Leah's dad agreeing to send for Obi wan and entrusting the plans to Leah, and the last word of the movie being "hope" just hits right in the feels.
    I enjoyed your review a lot. It is great to see someone else finding it and loving it.
    I noticed your other video re the MCU. I would say watch in release order. It will pay off when you get to Avengers Endgame. Phase 1 and 2 is a mixed bag, with Captain America the Winter soldier being the standout movie of phase 2 and the film that really gained the MCU momentum.

      Hi Laura, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. This had to be one of my favourite movies in the franchise, I absolutely loved it and you are right, it had some fantastic moments.
      We decided to watch the MCU via release order as that was the general consensus when it came to the choice. Really looking forward to seeing the movies.
      What did you think of the Star Wars Sequels?

    The ending of this film, to me, is very reminiscent of Halo: Reach; a pyrrhic victory in an otherwise losing battle, but that's part of it's charm. & I wouldn't have it any other way.

    A better name for the Death Star would be the Happytime Feel Nice Ice Cream Emporium, with a clown face painted on it.

    The best SW film apart from the original trilogy.
    I had no idea that everyone died, I was so upset! And that hallway scene with Vadar…..then Carrie appeared 😢 - EMOTIONAL WRECK!

    Since you said Chirrut was your favorite character, as he is also mine, the actor is Donnie Yen and he has a plethora of solid movies. The most well known and most recent being the Ip Man series. I recommend checking out the first movie.

    I remember in your ROTS reaction you said that Anakin might as well live on Mustafar (The volcanic planet he got burnt on) And he basically did end up doing it on his own tower named Vader's Castle which is on Mustafar, (The big black castle that Vader showed up on)

    Did you notice that the ship that Princess Leia was on the the first ship you see in A New Hope?
    Also, Red 5 was blown to bits in this film. Do you remember who came Red 5 in A New Hope?

    Bear in mind that there are three Star Wars shows after The Mandalorian that will be showing up. The first comes out on the 29th December. However, I won’t tell you which one it is due to spoilers related to ‘The Mandalorian. When you get to the season 2 post credit scene you will know which series it will be. As for the other two series coming out next year, the first is the Obi Wan Kenobi limited series set 10 years after revenge of the Sith. The other show is ‘Andor’, a prequel to Rogue one, described as a spy thriller series.

    Clone Wars be🔥🔥🔥
    So happy to see ya react to Clone Wars before the Sequels. While Clone Wars starts out for children, it gets really good. You just need patient as Yoda might say. It is some of the best Star Wars ever, animated or live action!

  • @jasoncaldwell5627

    It's tied with Empire Strikes Back for top Star Wars movie.
    They introduce and make you love the characters and in a way, it's a good thing they all die so no one can come along and cock up the characters.
    They were believable heroes, with flaws and quirks and they all stepped up when it counted and died as heroes.
    Plus, we get tooksee Vader in his top form.
    100/100- couldn't be better.

      Hi Melissa,
      Thank you for watching and for your comment, it's really appreciated. I totally understand what you mean, I feel like I am getting to see a totally different side to Anakin and one I would have missed should I had decided to skip watching Clone Wars. This has been such an amazing show so far and I have been told it only get's better :)
      Hope you are well
