Anyone who likes the song "Wallflower" here?
Great song, then so appears which wos far more commercial but much inferior
My favourite Gabriel song
Love it
17:32 I heard this and was like "HELL NO".
To my ears it is the best. But I like pop music that has a serrated edge
@@kevtruth fucking great description...... .I'm gonna use that, if you don't mind 🙂
So and Up for me. Toss up. Those two are just brilliant beyond belief.
I've been digging into his discography for a few weeks, man how surprisingly amazing it is! As for now I just want to say that San Jacinto is one of my all time favourite songs. That's the definition of what the term "moving" means to me
I loved that in your genesis ranked video you had a peter gabriel vinyl in the back, and in this video you have a Genesis vinyl in the back.
It's like I planned it like that 😃
Hey man, listen to "games without frontiers" and "I don't remember" a few more times ok? Those songs are objective Masterpieces
Definitely agree with that. Melt didn't click with me on first listen, I think it stunned me more than anything. I enjoy it now but not as much as Car, So or i/o.
Enjoyed the video! Peter’s second album “scratch” holds a special place in my heart, I love the transition between D.I.Y and Mother of Violence, so exquisite!
"Down The Dolce Vita" from _Car_ is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Period.
Thanks! What a good surprise! I saw the notification and i click on it immediately! I have to listen to Long Walk Home and Big Blue Ball and listen again Ovo!... Security is my favorite! I have to relisten to his entire discography! He is my favorite singer and probably one of my favorite artist! Thank you again!
I haven’t heard each album, but from what I’ve heard, my favorite is definitely 4/Security
"security" only had one song I like... Yes, that one
Great going through! 😊
Fascinating commentary; he lets us know he goes his own way.
Great video man 👍
That was BRILLIANT ! Didn't expect you to do a PG WTB... Of course, I don't have the same ranking as you do but it doesn't matter. I love your passion (no pun intended). I will give a second listen to Long Walk Home because it didn't worked with me back in the days... My favorites are 1 : PG2, 2 : PG4 and 3 : Up. But as you said, there is no bad album, I love them all.
I seem to have come a bit late to your channel but have already subscribed. I have really enjoyed your review, and, as a long time PG fan (my favourite musical artist), I have to say that, in the most part, I agree with your assessments. I particularly like the fact that you have put "Up" so high. It is a great album and "Signal to Noise" is my favourite PG song of all time. I think in my own list, I would have put PG4 as number one, and bumped PG1 down a few notches, but hey, we can't be totally in sync! 😎
SUN-AHH-SIN-TOE is how to pronounce San Jacinto.
Great video
Great, wonderfully surprising list!
Great video. Poltergeist flips through your albums, bottom left-hand corner at 21:03
So glad, Up gets so much love in this review. Its a stunning album.
You forgot to add a card for your review of Car when you said “You can find it up there.” Great review by the way! I love Car as well. And this was a great worst to best also. Thanks as always!
Amazing Video thank you for doing this. I´ve been a huge Peter Gabriel fan, I just love his music, his an one of a kind artist. How about doing a worst to best of Spock´s Beard and Neal Morse, i´m having a great time discovering Neal music, and i´m looking forward the new releases of Sola Gratia and the new Transatlantic!!
Can't believe I didn't know about Big Blue Ball and Long Walk Home. Solsbury Hill is my absolute favourite song of his. I'd have to cherry pick my favourite tracks from his albums as there's none I like all the way through. Always great fun watching your videos!
Great video and interesting choices indeed! What dou you think of the German vesion of #3?
I guess that I really need to start giving the post-SO albums more listening time...
The cover of Up is seriously creepy. I think it's the sharp foreground which seems to make the blurred face come alive
Speaking about Birdy I remember that in the booklet of my cd copy said as a warning that most of the disc are just reworked material lol
Melt is my true favorite
Right now I probably go:
1. PG3
2. Security
3. Us
4. Up
5. So
6. PG1
7. OVO
8. PG2
9. Passion
10. Birdy
11. Scratch My Back
12. Long Walk Home
Thanks for your overview of Peter Gabriel's discography. Car is also my favorite Peter Gabriel album. took me a while to get into Peter Gabriel's solo albums but over time I have developed an affinity for a lot of songs on the first four albums. I have noticed that the album which most resembles the Genesis style is my favorite but I began to branch out and like a greater variety of style songs later on.
1. Car- has to be one of the most underrated albums I have ever heard. The variety, dramatic build and quality in so many diverse compositions is fabulous. it is also a perfect example of why I think it is best to decide for oneself which albums are best since I think more highly of it than most of the critics. My favorites:
Moribund The Burgermeister
Solsbury Hill
Modern Love
Humdrum.
Slowburn
Down The Dolce Vita
Here Comes the Flood
2. Scratch basically tied with Melt for second- to me is not quite as outstanding, but still a fine album, and to me it has the most consistent opening with three excellent songs in a row. It is as if not more underrated since it is often trashed completely by critics. I just don't get it.
Favorite songs:
On the Air
DIY
Mother of Violence
white Shadow
Animal Magic
2, Melt took a while for me to get into but I realized that I really enjoy the middle five songs, so I just skip the others. Biko is good too but too long from me. There is something hypnotic about the unique and hard driving percussion and off beat visceral vocal delivery alternative dance rock. Favorite songs
I Don't Remember
Family Snapshot
And Through the Wire
Games Without Frontiers
Not One of Us
4. Security is similar to Melt in that the beginning is a bit too dark for me, though at times I am almost on the verge of liking The Rhythm of the Heat but it just makes me feel too disturbed to really enjoy, when he screams in desperation the rhythm has his soul I feel a need to stop listening. This sounds like the soundtrack for reading the Golden Bough and watching Apocalypse Now but I guess it came out too late to be included in the movie. Favorite songs:
San Jacinto- I thought of Sam Houston winning Texas independence as I listened
I Have the Touch
Shock the Monkey
Kiss of Life- amazing percussion with a really complex and hypnotic rhythm
5. So
After this I don't really connect as much as I do to the other albums but my favorite tracks on So are Big Time, Red Rain and In Your Eyes all of which I kind of like but not as much as the songs mentioned on the previous albums.
Not that familiar with the other albums
It would be nice to show the cover of the album while you’re talking about them. Nice video.
I like that you also have the Soundtracks in your list.
The most reactors doesn't take them.
CAR was the first CD I owned in 1990, I still think US is my favourite album and saw him on the UP tour. Still waiting for that new album 😩
Before watching the ranking i have to say this ... I really love Passion. I almost cry listening to that album (Here in Chile, Last Temptation was censored for almost 20 years, and is know as THE FORBIDDEN MOVIE (kinda). Then, when someone showed me the OST without any context it was wonderful
I love the New Blood album, I'm surprised it ranked so low.
I did see the tour live though, so that probably (definitely) influenced me.
Lol, I didn't even know Long Walk Home exists.. My favorites are 3, 4 (didn't realize until recently how great Wallflower is), So and Us. Hope he makes at least one more "real" studio album, Up is 18 years old now..
Speaking of Peter Gabriel, please do a video on Happy the Man. Their eponymous and 2nd album are really amazing. After Genesis, PG considered them briefly to be his new band.
In my mind, you cannot rate his albums simply from worst to best or even from least to most listenable. There are too many outstanding records that capture different emotions and experiences with incredible lyrics, melodies and rhythms, so you end up with a big tie depending on YOUR mood. Although I do love Security and think it's better than Car overall (not that Car is bad, its not). I would bet more fans would agree with me, but who knows, I have only been listening to his stuff since the 1970s! Also, how can you diss "Lay Your Hands on Me." It's amazing. And I get goosebumps every time I hear the San Jacinto lyric: "I Hold the Line."
Pronunciation check: San Jacinto
SAN (like "sand" with no D) hah-SIN-toh
Birdy OST was released in 1985 not 1975. 8:32
How dare you diss Kiss that Frog! D: It's an underappreciated poppin' thumper!
The Secret World Live version is BETTER!!!
Ovo is too low in the ranking in my opinion. But I I understand your point.
Each to their own, for me:
1 Passion
2 Up
3 Long Walk Home
4 Us
5 Melt
6 So
7 Security
8 Birdy
9 Car
10 Scratch
11 Ovo
12 Big Blue Ball
13 New Blood
14 Scratch my back
As you say, no bad albums with the exception of PG which is scraping the bottom of the barrel and I've not bothered about.
He said years ago that he had two or three albums worth of new material but none of it as been released as yet, so maybe it's not that good.
I never heard of Security being called Mask.
1. Car
2. Melt
3. Security
4. So
5. Scratch
6. Us
7. Up
I always find it a little sad: in interviews he repeatedly says "we had enough material, we could have made three records out of it." Then why doesn't he have it? or at least two. Instead, a new studio album comes out every twenty years.
I think he didn't use any cymbals ot high hat on some of those early ones because it prevents the songs from being compared to 70's music.
Great analyses and a peculiar #2 choice! For me, there is no better album of his than Security. Sure other records sought different ambitions, but Security feels like an actual descent into the jungle. I gotta respectfully disagree with one point you make. The massive, sweeping drum sounds on Lay Your Hands on Me add so much vigor to the album. That, and with its jarring chorus, it excels at bringing out a visceral sound. And Wallflower is simply a beautiful ballad. Just beginning where the harmonies seek to find stability as they waver around the tender instrumentation, is brilliant.
YES! Everything you said.
"Worst to Best" - starts off with "Scratch my back...": "very, very good", "dripping with brilliance", "a classic" - "so many great tracks [on this record]"
OK, so what exactly was *bad* about this album again?! ;-)
Peter Gabriel's 'Signal to Noise' from 'Up' STEALS Martin Scorsese's 'Gangs of New York' film and soundtrack (it scores the opening big battle of the gangs. But glad you have such love for the EXTREMELY quirky first albums it's one of my favorites too.
1. Peter Gabriel 3: Melt
2. Peter Gabriel 2: Scratch
3. Peter Gabriel 1: Car
4. Peter Gabriel 4: Security
5. So
6. Passion
7. Up
8. Us
9. Long Walk Home
10. OVO
11. Big Blue Ball
12. Birdy
13. New Blood
14. Scratch My Back
15. And I'll Scratch Yours
I would agree with your ranking for the most part. Except for me, I would rank So a little higher. Maybe number 3 for me.
Justice for Melt!!
4:10 Gladly 😎
seems we totally disagree on the ranking here, good words about most of the album though, waiting for hackett and anthony phillips rankings next ;)
Here's my ranking (since we're all doing it). If it's not listed, I haven't heard it.
12. OVO
11. Scratch (PG2)
10. New Blood
9. Birdy
8. Up
7. Long Walk Home
6. Passion
5. Melt (PG3)
4. So (PG4)
3. Security
2. Us
1. Car (PG1)
Just studio albums proper I’d go with
1 Us
2 4/Security
3 Up
4 So
5 3/Melt
6 1/ Car
7 2/ Scratch
My ranking (not including soundtracks)
1. PG 3
2. So
3. PG 4
4. PG 1
5. Up
6. Us
7. Scratch My Back
8. PG 2
33:12 favorite album by far, but UP is very *close* second... WHAT?!
You were paying attention, yup :)
Uhhh, The Book of Love is a MAGNETIC FIELDS song, not a Peter Gabriel one. And, he absolutely drained the quirkiness and fun out of the original song.
There's a gaping hole in Gabriel's discography, and that's the cover of Roy Harper's Just Another Day that he did with Kate Bush on TV. It's a travesty it was never released as it's one of the most powerful songs he's ever done. It's on RUclips if you haven't heard it.
10. Peter Gabriel (1)
2. Peter Gabriel (2)
1. Peter Gabriel (3)
3. Security
4. Plays Live
7. Birdy
9. So
5. Us
6. Secret World Live
8. Up
Hoo boy, that sure came out of nowhere!
My ranking:
7. Peter Gabriel 2/Scratch
6. Peter Gabriel 4/Security (yes, I know, controversial placement)
5. Up
4. Peter Gabriel 1/Car
3. Us
2. So
1. Peter Gabriel 3/Melt (no bad song on this album. Masterpiece.)
Not including Scratch My Back and New Blood, since these are re-recording albums. No soundtracks either. Passion is my favourite from them though.
If you move up #4 Security two pin holes I agree with you
So?
Hard disagree with PG2 being so early in the list. It's easily in the top 5. His first 5 albums are all so distinct, but I feel like it stands out as his most raw and stripped-down albums. The first album is far more theatrical and elaborately produced.
And how is So not even in the list?
Peter didn’t require other artists not to use guitars or drums. That’s completely false. That rule only applied the songs he chose to cover.
Half the songs from Us are better on the Secret Word Live album!!!
1 - 4 (San Jacinto is majestic, I would have preferred I Go Swimming over Kiss of Life, I think he wasn't sure which one to take)
2 - Passion (Just love to float away, visiting ancient people, Of These Hope ist breath-taking, it goes deep into the conciousness)
3 - Us (Steam is not good, let's be frank, Quiet Steam is way better and I think PG is aware of this, since his new album at some point was meant to sound more like Quiet Steam, if you haven't heard Quiet Steam yet, do! I like the live-version of Washing of The Water better, otherwise no weak track.)
4 - Up (Signal to Noise is majestic as well, even more in the live version. Phew, when David Rhodes comes in with the guitar! I'm not a big fan of Growing Up.)
5 - 1 (There are three songs which are stinkers for me.)
6 - Long Walk Home (That's just a question of feeling, it doesn't reach me for some reason)
7 - 3 (The production is too cold in my opinion, And through The Wire is not very good, the chorus of Not One of Us is weak, Start is just a filler)
8 - So (Too likeable in parts, In Your Eyes was stripped of some parts to fit the vinyl-album, every live-version of it is way, way, way superior, I love Kate Bush sooooo much, but I don't like Don't Give Up, the middle eight is very good, apart from it, it's too long, Hear That Voice Again doesn't do much for me. Red Rain, Mercy Street on the other hand, fantastic! Missing from the album is the lovely Curtains, which I really think could be included on the CD like This is The Picture, it IS that good.)
9 - Birdy
10 - 2 (The first side is enjoyable, the second side consists of Indigo, Home, Sweet Home and some crackles inbetween those tracks. The whole production is awful. Shame on you, Brian Eno!)
11 - New Blood (I like classical music. And I like drums and guitars. I don't like classical music instead of drums and guitars.)
12 - Scratch My Back (The Book of Love is wonderful, but most of the stuff is ... I don't get the idea of the whole thing. We are waiting for new material, that's what we did back then!)
His cover of The Book of Love is horrible. He turned a down-to-earth quirky fun campfire song from The Magnetic Fields into a grandiose, overproduced, melodramatic, dead-serious power ballad. What a shame.
SO is my favourite. One of the best albums of all time. Next is US and then UP. I can't wait for I/O. That may turn out to be his best.
Passion is the best album of all time. Sigh.
Almost all artists are best when they start. They more hungry, angry and desperate to impress
Desperate to impress doesn't always make for the best music if it leads to an artist trying to make what they think others want. That can be a way to get totally lost and some artists never get out of that mindset and lose what they had. I don't think PG has ever really made that mistake but it shows how subjective music is because I prefer Melt to the first one, all good though.
Worst to best for IQ? Thanks bud
You don't have to pretend that some musicians are artists (suggesting that's some kindn of extra quality) just because you think they're very good. Especially when they're not always that good, and tend to repeat themselves in their late years.
As if ....as if "US" has any songs better than Sledge, In your eyes, big time . 🙄
Us and Peter Gabriel 3 are far too low. These are my 2 favorite albums. All the songs Us are great and Melt has such a dark feel which continues from Scratch. So in my opinion is overrated as I have pretty much heard all of it on the radio and I am totally saturated with it. Car isnt his best work in my opinion. I love Peter Gabriel's work both as a solo artist and in genesis but that album blends too much of both together and in my opinion it doesn't work as well.
Family Snapshots is based on a true story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Snapshot, as well as Biko too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biko_(song)
