Just had a scrotal ultrasound today and found this video to analyse my experience. Was given a sheet of what looked and felt like kitchen paper to cover my boy. Of course, having to wipe off copious amounts of gel off of painful body parts meant that the "cover" was useless. 2 females doing the procedure and they made me feel like a piece of meat. I thought they would have some knowledge of urology, so tried to explain where the pain was eminating from. Half hearted scan with them basically saying to my face that there was nothing wrong until I asked them to finally scan the painful part. Oh, suddenly they found vascular build up. The pain was emanating from the lower part of my left testicle which they seemed to be avoiding. As soon as I widened my legs - because I thought it would make the area more accessible - the nurse recoiled and stopped scanning. If they had told me to cross my legs and position myself like they said in this video, perhaps a decent result would have been achieved. The NHS is far more incompetent than we are led to believe. I left the scan feeling ashamed, frustrated and confused.
Thank you ladies. Next time this happens, I will be keeping your guidelines in mind.

Actually a male, me for example, is comfortable having a woman do a scrotal ultrasound. You are making this a sexual thing and it isn't. They care about what they are doing and doing it well so nothing is missed not what your junk looks like. What if the male teck was gay? He wouldn't care about your junk either. He would also concentrate on what needs to be done. I have had many scrotum ultrasounds done and prostate as well. All the tecks were women and all were great. Professional, kind and courteous. Stop overthinking others motives or what they "think" of your body. The scan is just another part of their job. It needs to be done so they do it.

Were I a patient simulator getting a scrotal ultrasound, I would advise the two sonographers in the video to conform to the ethical principle of respect for patient autonomy. This principle is associated with a set of ethical values such as informed consent, personal privacy, dignity, confidentiality, bodily integrity, and choice. There are treatment principles that can be logically derived from the ethical principle and ethical values. One treatment principle is to permit patients to do what they are capable and willing to do. This gives the patient a sense of control over his/her own treatment.
Neither protocol described by the sonographers in the video appears to fully conform to the treatment principle in question; patients are not invited to do certain things that they are capable of doing themselves. If the sonographers violate the treatment principle, it follows that they also deviant from one or more of the ethical values and the principle of respect for patient autonomy.
Of import for many, if not most, male patients is the medical necessity of exposing their penises when a scrotal ultrasound is done.* It is my understanding that there is no need to do so. Nevertheless, it appears that the protocols used by both sonographers lead to exposure. I submit that were patients given the choices denied to them by the two sonographers in the video, they could decide for themselves whether or not or to what extent to cover themselves.
If I am correct, then the two sonographers have an ethical deficiency that needs to be corrected. It takes more than technical skills to successfully maneuver in most healthcare settings in which legal/ethical issues are quotidian occurrences; it takes a solid foundation in distinguishing between human rights and privileges and the recognition that the latter never trumps the former.
    * To paraphrase the U.S. courts: The desire of Americans to cover their naked bodies from the view of strangers, especially those of the opposite sex, is a matter of elementary self-respect, personal dignity, and fundamental right to privacy. Anyone who would usurp those rights plays the role of the tyrant. It's a strange doctrine, indeed, that would require a person to relinquish those rights by virtue of the misfortune of falling ill and having to enter a healthcare facility (e.g., Backus v. Baptist, EEOC v. Mercy, Jones v. Hinds).

There is profound unlawful discrimination and disrespectful disparity in equity between male patients and female patients... [1] Male patients, including boys, are NOT informed that they have the comfort RIGHT to same-sex practitioners and technicians, [2] male patients, including boys, are NOT informed of their right NOT to have female nurses or medical assistants unnecessarily in the clinical rooms, [3] males patients, including boys, are NOT informed that they may decline intimate parts of an exam, or that they may have the comfort of a "patient advocate" of their choosing present, [4] female medical staff do NOT ask mother's of adolescent and teenage boys to leave the clinical rooms (but they insist father's leave, even if the patient is male) and [5] male patients, including boys, who advocate for their rights are OFTEN ostracized, ridiculed, shamed and punned.

You explained how you became fascinated with ultrasound but not what draws women into scanning men’s genitalia.
Also, you mention the part about breaking bad news to a patient. I’m guessing that’s usually testicular cancer which always involves sacrificing the cancerous testicle to surgical removal. You don’t let the doctor do this bit? It’s probably even worse for a man to get this kind of news from a woman, pretty humiliating I would think.
I guess there’s nothing more humiliating that having women do this kind of work on a man. Seems pretty cruel for women to be doing this job actually. Like sadistic in a very subtle way because you can’t get mad at the operator for humiliating you. It’s not like they’re the ones who caused the disease. But to the male psyche it seems like women are getting a little pleasure at our suffering.

Most often, clinics do not offer choice of gender because only woman are employed there. Changes should be made. I had 4 testical Ultrasounds done, and each time by a different woman. By no means am I discrediting the quality of the exam by either gender, but I am stating that if a man doesn't want a female, and has modesty issues, ( yes men do, and that is perfectly ok, this is normal) he should be able to choose a male tech. Woman don't have to choose, their gender overwhelmingly is employed so no issues. Just my opinion.

Like I said, I have no issues with females doing male sonograms, and I am VERY certain you have the very same education and capability as a male sonographer ( I have a daughter who is in NURO ICU who is smart as a whip at a MAJOR hospital) but my quest is for "THE CHOICE" for men. Woman seem to have it a lot better. All Female Breast Clinics, All female OBGYN clinics.... etc, but men are always told to "Suck it Up - "You don't have anything - we (as females) haven't seen before...? NO...wrong answer... we do NOT want to hear that. This is old "pressure tactic" of doing things.....embarrassing men to suck it up and accept females in their exam. It is time to deal with men's modesty, and also giving men "choice" and sensitivity - just like woman get and demand.. I was in an exam with 2 females, and it was very embarrassing, and I wish I had of said no. Men need the very same care as afforded to woman. Thank you for your response. in the very least, I hope my response has made you even more aware to help your job when men come in. Not every man, wants to expose himself to you. Many, if given the "choice" - would take a man. Many men do NOT feel comfortable talking to a woman about his male issues. Many men will die, and not go to the doctor because of this issue. That is NOT how we want male-health-care to be. We want men JUST as comfortable when it comes to their health, as woman.

There really isn't a 'normal' size (everyone is very different) however what we usually look for is asymmetry (they are different in size) or lumps. Our only recommendation is for you to go with your gut feeling, if you are concerned then get them looked at. @256shadesofgrey6 There should be way more men doing this job. Millions of men refuse care because there are not enough male techs and nurses. Basically, it would be like you getting a mammogram by a man, which doesn't happen, so why the double standard. It isn't sexist either to be saying this that we don't won't women that we are not in a relationship with to be touching or looking at our genitals. Men are naturally very protective of our genitals and it is already hard enough to get examed by a doctor. Then, having to go through a bunch of female techs and embarrassing ourselves is too much for many men. I am not gonna flat out say women don't belong in your field because some men prefer women because of possible past trauma or preferences. However, men who have religious, mental, and modesty issues would rather die from whatever they got than be looked at by a female they are not in a relationship with. I am autistic I absolutely hate being touched and looked or anything down there it is almost like trying to make eye contact. I can't do it. Also, I have religious reasons as well. I can't bear my genitals in front of women I am not married to.

The biggest problem in this industry is the sheer lack of "choice" for men, when it comes to these exams. Woman get superior choice over men, when it comes to any exposure in a medical setting. Men are "expected" to adhere to exposure, and sometimes made fun of if they dont. I get your humor. After all, I think I remember some reference to "our parts" in the beginning of the video as "balls". Maybe to make light of the situation too? - Professionally, they aren't "balls" they are testicles. Men DO feel awkward. The BEST answer to this, is offer men "choice". Not an excuse. After all.... some woman don't mind male techs, but the clinics don't offer them, because woman get more sensitivity to their modesty needs, than men do.
