- From our park up at the incredible Gara Medouar, we couldn’t have anticipated the crazy situation that lay ahead, this really was the unexpected as we overland Morocco.
We're all for getting off the beaten track for a bit of adventure but suddenly, we didn’t have to do that, the adventure came to us!
Previously we've said "contrary to popular belief, you don't need 4WD or a monstrous overland truck to explore this fascinating country" but this week we’re so pleased we had exactly that.

This weather and the resultant conditions, is so Australian.
Water doesn't soak in, and sits on top. Fun!!
Ah interesting, yeah I can imagine it being a little crazy there. 🙏😀
Hahahaha....you two are just like me and my wife Carolyn, in so many ways...lol...I always sleep like the dead, no matter the weather outside our Sprinter Campervan. Will be crossing into Morocco at the end of March, and we trust we will not encounter rain like you've had. Loving your videos...Have to my ass in gear and do more videos for our channel. Currently in the UK on a visit, and be sooo glad to escape SOUTH...Just like you guys...we are Wheely Living. Best wishes. Tony and Carolyn :)
Woww
I think anything less than a 4x4 truck just wouldn't have coped. I enjoyed your mix of confidence and fear, cautiousness and 'we will be fine'. I can understand Izzy being fearful. Even though one can rationalise and understand the fear isn't real, it doesn't take the fear away - I hope that makes sense.
However, what an adventure. A day of driving I guess you won't forget.
Great combo a curry and a G&T or two. 😊
Another interesting vlog and a great contrast to Alex ((Mispronounced Adventures) who I am also currently following - his vlog today was from Nordkapp. Similar to you in one way in that he was driving in somewhat extreme weather.
Keep on fiming as I am vicariously loving Morocco.
Thanks guys.
Hi Peter, as always a big thank you. This is great and it makes perfect sense, in fact you sound exactly like Izzy post event describing how she was feeling.
I'll check out Mispronounced Adventures, sounds right up my street.
Lots of good stuff from Morocco still to come, pleased your enjoying it and appreciate the support. Cheers, 🙏😀
Impressive trip. The bridge crossings was brave!
Thank you, it was cheeky enough, as you well know -you can never be too careful with water. 🙏😀
We are obviously a few weeks behind you as there was evidence of recent flooding but everywhere was dry between Merzouga and Tazzarine this week, which i am extremely happy about as our front wheel drive vehicle would not have coped with those roads.
We travelled down from Ouarzazate one morning and laughed at the signs for all of the dried up river beds. We saw thunderstorms in the mountains but didn't understand the significance. Each river bed washed out. It got fairly hairy in our rented Renault 4.
Another great video we’re amazed by the amount flooding you’ve had there we hope you get out ok can you organise some sunshine next week 👍
Hi Andy, a late reply and thank you. Yeah thankfully the weathers incredible 🙏😀
Another Great video guys. Edge of your seat stuff, With a happy ending, what’s not to love. Totally with you on the Heinz tomato ‘comfort’ soup. Will definitely be stocking up
😀🙏 Glad you enjoyed it, yeah the Heinz is a must 😉🙏
Another excellent video it’s a good job that you have a very tall 4x4 to get you through the worst of the water. Both of you keep safe..
Hi Neil, thank you and yeah we were pleased to have such a capable rig 🙏😀
Beautiful video. I love it too much .Thank you.
Thank you 😀
Well that was hairy you two! I would be exactly the same as you Izzy and saying similar things - washed away and so forth! Good to be reminded that the sun doesn’t always shine and makes sure you’ve got lots of tinned soup 😊
lol, jack the Knaus up a bit and you'll be fine 😉😀, Amanda believe me when I say there were a few choice words directed my way... but it's all part of the adventure. 😀
Waaawe, lot of risks
Yeah, continuously assessing as the day progressed but that's definitely part of life on the road, we had it last year with landslides in the Caucasus. I guess there’s always going to be something 🙏😀
Good man that's a well done for sure
😀😀 Thank you
19:50 Wise decision, Well done.
Thank you 😊
Dry as a bone now. Even the palm trees look like they're struggling.
Timestamp 11:39 yyeeehhhaaaaa that was some rushing water 💧
The bridge looked like it was going to get washed away.
Glad you made it so far, but good to see you knew when to stop.
Yeah, there’s so much energy there and you never quite know the build quality but thankfully all's well 🙏😀
Water can be so unpredictable!!
That was brilliant.
Hi Ray, thank you 🙏😀
Awesome! We’re enjoying watching your adventure in our camper in sunny Snowdonia! Yes, really, it’s gorgeous here today (27/3/2023).
Very brave for soldiering on😮. A very capable truck & pilot!!
Hi John, thank you and hello to sunny Snowdonia (somewhere I Phil know well & love).
Really appreciate the comment, enjoy your own adventure 🙏😀
Your video reminds me of the time in the early 90s that four of us hired a Renault 4 in Ouarzazate and headed to Zagora. The roads washed out like happened to you on our way back north. On the third river crossing I was steering with full lock upstream but the water was coming over the wheels and through the doors. That third river crossing was my limit. I'd have preferred to do it in a trustee MAN Diesel like yours.
We won't be doing that with our new VW California.
LOL, great story... it doesn’t bare thinking about in a Renault 4 (which is probably still knocking about somewhere).
Yeah, I can imagine 🙏😀
🇲🇦🤝🇬🇧
You guys need to chill bit , I did Morroco Mauritania and Mali on bike 🏍️ in winter ❄️ and it was amazing just enjoy and be more adventurous…
Hi, appreciate your thoughts and yeah I'd happily do that on a bike. I think the difference is when it's your home, transport and business you've got a bit more to loose and become a little more measured.
I could swallow walking away from a £10k bike but not a £100k truck.
Cheers 👍🏻😀
We have found plenty of rain on our trips, but on motorbikes, we can't really go through something that deep!! 😮
Tonga behaved like a good soldier!! 👍and the driver too!!
Stay safe, guys!!
All the best, J and D 😊
Hi guys, never ideal when it’s really wet on the bike, it affects soo much more than when you’re sitting enclosed in 4 wheels, warm & dry.
Yeah t'was a little over the ankles but Tonka performed well, but otherwise all's good 🙏😀
Caught these rains on my motorbike, almost .5 m of rain fell up there that week!! I got a bit stuck in chefchaouen.. at least the world cup was on(Maroc in the Semi's!) hash is cheap and food is great! thx for the video reminder 😅
We met a few people on bikes and in fairness them, they forded some but ultimately it just got too much.
Appreciate the comment 🙏😀
Great video 👍👍👍
thank you 🙏😀
Welcome to Morocco! Good video & incredible adventure! ❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏😀
Brilliant adventure 😆👍🏻
Thank you, cheers 😀
@@TheGapDecaders I would love an Overlander- Iv got a lovely Motorhome but yours is the next level 😎👌🏻
@@andrewhilton4243 Hi Andrew, thank you and kind of you to say. We've had a couple of great motorhomes but feel this is more us 🙏😀
Drive safe❤❤❤
Thank You, we'll try 🙏😀
In love with the Scottish-English :D
A warm welcome to Morocco!
Thank you so much, Irish - English 😀🙏
That’s what you call proper rain ! ☔️
Absolutely 😀, thank for the comment
nice videos but you guys risked and pushed your luck there :) i am glad all is good but seriously its wiser not to cross rivers like that. enjoy your trip
Hi and thank you for the comment and yeah we pushed it.
Having spent 25 years in the army driving everything accross the world in challenging conditions and two years teaching tactical off road driving, I feel confident in my abilities and the trucks capabilities.
That said, I take your point - fording moving water is always risky but ont his occasion it worked out. 🙏😀
Amazing footage which was so compelling to watch. Have I got it wrong or were you driving through those floods with your right arm out of the window holding the camera? Whichever way you do it I greatly admire your videography skills.
Hi Dave, thank you so much and yes (hands up) I have to confess to trying to capture what I could whilst driving, what you didn’t hear because of the sound of water was Izzy giving me grief in the cab 😀🙏
❤❤❤
Izzy you speak to us all with your natural fear of dying/drowning/going-off-a-cliff. Not likely to happen but the males just gung-ho through it … #balance ❤
Hi Jeanette, Good comment - we're sitting here smiling... to an extent yes but when it’s your home, office and transport it's an incredibly measured and balanced approach when we come across these situations. 🙏😀
Thank you for including Western Sahara on the map. 👏👏👏
Moroccan western Sahara .....
@@mahdiderabat no…stop trying to take what is not yours. Where is your honour?
You have steel balls! 😉
😀😀 Thank you, I'll take that 🙏😀👍
You fools! Why didn't you stop sooner???? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Seriously though, I just wanted you to know what an inspiration you guys are to me. I am an American living in Turkey about to retire in 10 years or so, and am planning on doing exactly what you are doing when I am retired.
Just thanks so much. I especially have been helped by your question and answer videos, about the nuts and bolts of living on the road.
Hi Kevin, 😀 thank you and appreciate the feedback. All I can say is 10 years will fly by and time spent planning is time well spent. 🙏😀
@@TheGapDecaders Yes, I am planning right now. Especially since I really want to build a custom rig. I am more or less thinking about it as a house for the rest of my life, i.e. when I get too old to travel constantly I want to set it down somewhere (probably nearish to one of my kids.)
Other side the Farmers are happy 😂😂
Exactly, so needed 🙏😀
Jeeez Phil well done the the for 4x4 now eh.Fiona says she will swap places with your misses if she could we are in awe of the people there, kindness again etc ,the guy in the garbage wow!
Just gonna join you with your g&ts but I'm on cheap French red ,no gonna mix my Gordon's with it
We e never seen rain/water like that for years
Stay safe you two and let's hope more folks join ,subscribe and hit the like button
Till next one
All the best fae bonnie Scotland
Fiona and Gordon
Hi Gordon, Fiona, we're sat here laughing and loving that Fiona's willing to swap places (loving that sense of adventure). Yeah t'was a bit hairy at times, the truck was brilliant and thankfully all ended well wey a wee glass and a day to remember.
Appreciate you channel support and hopefully we'll get a few more clicks this year.
Anyway, always good to hear from you and we'll keep it coming.
Thanks both 😀
i truly enjoyed your video ,brave man.
Thank you so much, all part of the adventure 🙏😀
It looked like you were fine. A lot of weight to move there. We took Serenity up to Telluride in a blizzard once, driving through 12-18 inches of snow, and my wife told me much the same, but I was having a great time!
LOL, thank you... this made me smile, you get a feel in terms of situational awareness & this day was a continuous assessment, so many factors influencing that decision-making process.
I'd do it again tomorrow and see it as part of the adventure, that said...As long as you know when to stop. Appreciate the comment 🙏😀
@@TheGapDecaders Agree. The biggest fear for me (not very big, though) would be hitting unseen debris and puncturing a tire. It's just fun to drive our trucks where few can go! Looking forward to your next vid!
@@Colorado4x4Van Yes there’s definitely a risk, always good to have the capability so we can try to make the best informed decision 🙏😀
You've being unlucky with the weather so far it was a snow rain storm that hit the south east of Morocco the hottest region in Morocco... i hope your next videos have what you came here for SUN
But hey crossing rivers is part of overlanding
Thanks for the comment & yep absolutely.. I'm pleased man can't alter the weather because it make overlanding so much more interesting/challenging 🙏😀
😱😱😱
🙏😀
😵😵😵🚒🚒💪💪💪💪👌👌👌 4x4
Too big of a risk for me, the whole point of having your home with you is just to not be in such a rush as to need to get through.
People from europe dont know the importance of rain in morocco, its sacred.
just for a quick correction,/first of all there is no such called western Sahara exist, Morocco has all its territory covered have a safe trip to Morocco
Hello and thank you, I have ammendedthe map so future videos will show it as one.
@@TheGapDecaders Tks for understanding, and we all try to keep all nations united instead of separation
this video is the reason why police knocked on your door at night while camping in the emptiness and told you to change location in an older video. there's a reason why those lands are empty and no one lives in them, it's flash floods.
Yeah, it’s a fair point although the previous location was on high ground. There's no doubt the flooding downstream could catch people out.
The map of Morocco 🇲🇦 you are showing is not correct, Western Sahara is a part of the kingdom, try please to correct it, and enjoy your trip to Morocco
that how google show it, stop your crap. don't try to make problem for free. ask google not a tourist.
Morocco isn’t used to much rain, hence why when it happen anything else that main National roads gets blocked. However due to these floods getting frequent the government need to move their ass and start working on these roads.
Yeah, we can see that but I suppose it doesn’t happen that often, thankfully. Appreciate the comment 😀
why? spending billions in a some circumstance that happen once each 10 years for a few hours.make it a fun stop and spend some hours outside
better to spend that money in dams so, water will not go to algeria.
من فضلك صحح الخريطة فالصحراء الغربية هي جزء من المملكة المغربية عفوا منك انت في بلدنا فيجب أن تحترم حدوده
🙏😀
Estais un poco locos!!! You are fools!!
Thank you for your thoughts however, it's about situational awareness & assessing the risk at that point in time.
With over 25 years experience and having taught offroad driving and including water crossings, I felt confident in both the vehicle and my own ability.
The smart decision is not being arrogant and knowing when to stop. 🙏
