Hey, Bud! I'm a 72 yo grandma that never liked needlework! I'm beginning wood working. I want to thank you for your step by step videos, and free plans. I'm loving this. A retired RN with a new hobby/job. Hoping to make some coins. I think you do a great job explaining the process. Just want to say how much I appreciate the instructions and plans. Carry on!
Thank you, I just made my first one to surprise my wife. It came out amazing, our daughter has seen it and she said it's so good she wants one. Waiting for my wife to get home from work to see it. Your plans were great, you deserve all the credit if she likes it, well if she doesn't like it, I'm blaming you 😂
I get so excited when I see you have a new video! You explain everything perfectly and I know have 3 orders from your plans I have made! I am 68 years old, just got diagnosed with cancer that has spread to my pancreas so being able to make and sell things you provide the plans for is a blessing! Thank you so much!
I like the jump into it. But greatly appreciate you talking through each step and why your doing it a certain way. Your awesome and great humor 👍😃 Keep it up
I saw a raised garden bed in one of my neighbor’s yard and thought, “Hey- we can do that!” and I showed my son your videos and plans. But the yesterday when we drove by, I noticed the bottom was sagging from the weight of the soil and water- obviously not one of your plans, but we’re putting a board along the bottom to prevent that so no one will drive by and think, “What a couple of shmucks that built that!” You know… like how I’m judging my neighbors, now. Love your videos!
7:15 A tip I've always used when assembling and I have something tall I want to stand up vertically while I'm nailing (drilling, screwing, etc.) something flat to its bottom edge, is to support the vertical piece with a simple cardboard carton and a clamp. I keep several of a larger size box folded flat for storage needs, so I quickly fold one into its box shape, set a weight inside (gallon of paint, jug of water, something to make the box heavier than the piece so it won't tip or scoot), and clamp the top edge of the box to the vertical piece I'm assembling. The box side is nearly 90 degrees, not always perfect, but then again neither is having the vertical piece all wobbly. Then when I'm done, put the weight back where it was, unfold the box flat again and store, all done.
I put 1/2 inch braided rope on the ends so the customer can move them around. And on the mitered tops I screw on with glue because that’s the first hand hold people will reach for and they will pull off or break. Just a thought great videos as always. Your number 1 fan…..
@@danielcaballerojr harbor freight has all kinds of rope , but the wife didn’t like it so I went to Lowe’s and bought role of regular 3/8 braided rope for like 10 bucks for 50 ft.
Voss I just found your channel maybe a week ago and have been binge watching since. I guarantee you in time, not too much, you are going to have a HUGE following. You make great videos with excellent tips and projects but you also add an AWESOME sense of humor! I wish you all the best and will share your channel with everyone I know that has an interest in woodworking. When you're HUGE don't forget us little guys lol ;)
And another awesome build. Keep up the good work. I like the way you guys do your vids. Pretty much straight too the point. With some comedy in it 👍🏻👍🏻. Can’t wait too see what’s next
Dang! Thank you so much! These, the long planters and the post planters have been my top sellers this year. It seems like last year was all about the 3 picket planters, but this year is the big dogs lol
Fun fact: i only use two of them (bottom left). The tiny ones are flimsy and one of the bigger ones has a metric side which is always the side im using to mark soooo I only use the two
As a guy who is also too fat to fit in those tight spots, I’ve found 2 trigger clamps (1 on the outside and the other on the inside but reversed to to use as a spreader) makes those tasks require less awkward positions. Love the videos!!
cant wait to get to the shop and start this l have built some of your builds from last year and sold all. l am a little late getting ready for hip replacement then l can really fire things up....great build only thing l would add is a brace across the middle of the bottom so those bottom pieces on the planter wont sag great build fantastic video and description
Thank you so much for this. I just finished making this project for my wife. She loves it. I was able to add to it as well. I put wells on the bottom, and frome the scraps, I used the thin picese made a little fan trellis.
Delivering my first sale of this design today. Looks fantastic. I've sold this one and the regular 4ft planter, and I have to say I LOVE the wider legs on this one, made it soooooooo much easier to assemble!! I'll be doing that for the regular 4 footer from now on as well.
Thank you for the content and the free plans, I wanted to say I've found you can clamp one of the sides to your workbench on the leg below where you will put the width pieces. It holds that one from tipping and sliding pretty good with just the one clamp, even the long ones. Then both your hands are free to tighten the other boards up and nail. Hope this is helpful. You are a treasure friend, thank you for what you do.
I built this!! It is far from perfect, but not bad at all!! Thank you so much for your video and free plans!! I look forward to my next project. Someone already asked me to make something for them. Excited! 🎉❤
I appreciate how simply you explain everything and the simplicity of your plans (which I have downloaded). I will be making this garden box this coming week. Great video. Keep'em coming.
They are all in the video :) I started out with that miter saw and a circular saw, got a table saw and kept adding from there. Id like to make a "beginners woodworking" guide of where to start out though :)
Another great video. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge and experience with everyone. Only minor gripe I have is that little brace piece on the sides. Perhaps extend it so it runs the full height of the side? I recently finished a planter similar to this but without the shelf and with some additional trim on the top and bottom of the sides between the legs. For anyone debating the necessity of the shelf for stability, I don't feel it's needed. I think that wood is better used making rh box more detailed or adding additional soil depth. I love to use screws as I feel it creates a stronger finished product.
6:59 I typically will put one of my bottom pieces at the top and then put a clamp on the outside of both sides. Keeps the distance accurate while also being relatively sturdy while I put the first side together. Hopefully that makes sense
I really like this build, in fact I'm going to use this build for a client and my wife wants me to build her a garden box for our back porch 1ft by 4ft. I have recently built a 2ft by 4ft a lot bigger and heavier for a client. Instead of usung fence pickets, I use pallets. I also really like your other video's. I'm a DIY Builder myself part time. I also build guitar birdhouses and custom birdhouses and out door furniture. I wish I can do full time. I hate my day job. Keep up with the good work and the video's.
I didn't have a book on guitar birdhouse. I did some reaearch on google on guitar birdhouses. Theres different styles of them. I kinda built my own by using my sons guitar toys as templetes to trace them on the pallet wood and cut them out with a jig saw. I still built a box on the back. If you want I can email you some pics of my guitar birdhouses to give you an idea. I'm been thinking about starting a new RUclips channel deadicated to my builds. But I can't do it full time and I'm kinda shy about going on video also. Keep up with the great build video's I enjoy them.
I’m going to build this with a slight modification. I’m going to eliminate the bottom shelf, but retain the braces, and make it 24” wide. It’s going to replace part of a ground level raised bed. I’ll post pictures when it’s finished.
Heres my tip for getting the sides in i do the two long sides add the legs then i lay one side on my bench add the ends lay the other side on top then flip it upside down and add bottom support way easier for me
If making a lot of these to sell I’d recommend making, if you have the space, a wall mounted set of 2x4 or something that will hold the tops apart at 16” could even make a set for the bottoms so just slide in and it holds for you.
A lot of people apparently use their workbench legs or other means to hold it up when gluing/nailing. The boxes are all the same size and a jig would be easy to bang out to hold them though :)
I have no idea why this doesn't have 1 million+ views. I sell the crap out of Box H. At least 10 a week minimum, honestly more like 20-30 a week. I keep them stocked without the shelf under because people ask for them without the shelf. Just add the shelf later. Easy money. the only problem is having the space to store them before people pick them up, haha.
Nice. I would love to add rollers to these. This way I can move them when we get too much rain or too much extreme heat it too much cold to avoid freezing. I can roll them under my patio for extreme weather. How would you go about that? Maybe have the bottom like a dolly and add the rollers?
Great directions. I do not drill holes for the drainage but I do leave a small space between the boards. Also I do not glue incase the boards needs to be replaced down the road. What do you think?
Been making planters for awhile now but enjoyed seeing your process as well. I have this idea on legs I always use one 2" and the other side 1 7/16" so they look maybe uniform being 2" around if you know what I'm saying but I notice you dont. Thought I ask your thought on that ? I appreciate the answers as I always do...Respectfully,
I have to laugh. I made something very similar to this based upon your long garden planter with the 16" legs. I even made the leg brace and have an option for the shelf on the bottom. For holding it all together while nailing it, I use the black plastic squeeze clamps to hold a board in place on the side I am not nailing, then nail in the end boards on the other end then flip it all around, take out the clamps and nail the other side. Curious what you do when you have to use a sliver for the bottom/floor boards? My current solution is to cut the sliver to size, then find a likely neighbor for it, something close in shading, and glue it to that piece and tack it on with some brad nails. Thanks again, bro. You da man.
Thanks for the video. I enjoy the step by step instructions. However, during the video you mention that due to "blow out" of the bottom box boards, you recommend to run a board board to reinforce it. Could you elaborate on what you mean and how to do it. Thanks
When you drill out the holes, it pushes little sharp shrapnel pieces out the bottom of that board. When youredone drilling flip it over and you'll see them. They just need knocked off, not really sanded
Ayyy another awesome video! I got a quick question, when I make my garden beds I screw the legs together first, same with the walls to rather than the centre piece of wood (although I may consider putting a centre piece in), I also counter sink some screws from the inside of the bed into the legs. Not sure if it's overkill but I just want to make them last
Thanks for another great video ! I apologize for asking this because you told me once before , what is the brand of epoxy you used to finish your work table ? Also how many pickets come in a full pallet ? I think you had the right idea buying a whole pallet. I think I'm going to do that when the price of the pickets is down. The price at my local Menards was $2.19 each last November, and it has recently gone up to $3.99 each.
Really like your builds! Nice work. It's pretty good of you to supply plans to help others build and sell these items. I only want to make them as gifts for people but I have a question. I can't afford that awesome plainer you have would you suggest sanding as an alternative? Again thanks for the great video.
How funny, I made two counter height ones a couple qeeks ago for a special order. We didnt do a bottom shelf, I bet she would have liked it but I didnt even think about it.
Aaron, how long are the legs? I cannot find the plans for this one. I have the plans for the shorter version. So, the length for the legs is all I believe I need. Thank you!
Plans are in the description: click on "more" under the video, then click "more" to expand the description". Any plans I provide will be listed there :) legs are 32" - 35"
It would add time and materials, but feels like throwing in some screws would help for long term strength. At least where they can be screwed in from the inside. Also, been to Bushnell a few times. It's been a good 25 years but you know... Small world.
I didnt add it in the video but throwing some GRK screws in the end boards is what I do, since realistically there are only 8 nails holding the sides together
Plans are in the description: click on "more" under the video, then click "more" to expand the description". Any plans I provide will be listed there :)
Stick with a nail that doesnt have much of a head so it blends with the wood, sell a few boxes and use the profits for a nail gun :) Harbor Freight has them for pretty cheap
I might have this video mix up but you mention once in one of your videos you were using non galvanized brads from harbor freight ? Been wanting to ask if I heard that correctly or please correct me ? Thanks for sharing again !
We interacted on messenger. Thanks for this build. I have sold two and have an order for another three. At a build cost of about $33 and a sale price of $150 this is the highest profit margin item on my list of all of your planters. What do you recommend as the optimal price point for this. Also regarding the lip, you don't add a lip to the 16X16x16 model. Would you recommend adding one? Also the 5000 brad nails at harbor freight have a 20pct coupon right now. So i bought rhem yesterday and paid only $10.89. That's a steal.
I sell mine for $120 each :) i dont add a lip to the three picket planter because the dirt weight is supported just fine from the boards without a lip :)
Great video! Just need some clarification. in the video as you are doing the miter cuts for the top lip - you measure 46 1/8 and 15 1/8. you then stated add a 1/4 inch to each and then you state that equals 46 5/8 and 15 5/8. if you truly add 1/4 inch to each that would be 46 3/8 and 15 3/8. Which is correct - what is the final measurement? Thanks and I really appreciate your step by step approuch.
@@WhosTheVoss but in the beginning of the video you literally counted 11 boards (time - 17 seconds) i am not understanding how that only means you need 7 boards. Did you have 11 and only use 7 boards?

@@WhosTheVoss you’re gonna make me blush
Been making planters for awhile now but enjoyed seeing your process as well. I have this idea on legs I always use one 2" and the other side 1 7/16" so they look maybe uniform being 2" around if you know what I'm saying but I notice you dont. Thought I ask your thought on that ? I appreciate the answers as I always do...Respectfully,
Its a good look :) i just rip mine down the same size to save time
Blues Clues...handy dandy
Heeheeee
Large boxes I put upside down on a flat surface to put my sides on and clamp if needed...
Ill have to give it a shot
You da man.
I avoid slivers at all costs :P never had to use one with my plans, if I did need one, Id do what you suggested :)
Great Build! How do you keep your boards from warping and bending?
Controlling the moisture helps a lot, otherwise I use them as quick as possible to avoid giving them time to warp
Not sure if it's overkill but I just want to make them last
If you watch the long planter box I screw the short sides in place, I just forgot to show it in this video. (Sad moment)
Great video! Definitely subscribed!
Thanks buddy :)

Pickets come in skids of 350 per skid
Do you put any kind of finish on the wood, or will it just hold up in the wet weather without a finish? Thanks!
I use Thompson, but I let them know it's $5 more. I do it inside and outside, but cedar holds up pretty well outside.
Eggo zactly. I talk about sealants in my "Boost Your Planter Sales video" :)
No landscape fabric in the bottom??? Great video for a build.
My "Boost Planter Box Sales" video covers stains and sealers :) and other questions that might pop up :)
Really like your builds! Nice work. It's pretty good of you to supply plans to help others build and sell these items. I only want to make them as gifts for people but I have a question. I can't afford that awesome plainer you have would you suggest sanding as an alternative? Again thanks for the great video.
I dont sand my pickets, I leave them all natural. Otherwise, an orbital sander and a 60 grit sanding disc smooths them out rather quickly :)
How funny, I made two counter height ones a couple qeeks ago for a special order. We didnt do a bottom shelf, I bet she would have liked it but I didnt even think about it.
Now ya know Kiley! ;) lol
What would you retail this for
Thanks
$120 in my area with current demographic data :)
I just bought a stapler/nailer and I am planning to use the 1" staples. I wonder if we won't need as many since its got a little more power?
🤷♀️ give it a try on the smaller box and let me knoww
Do you recommend any type of sealers on these if I plan on using it for a garden bed? I not sure whats plant safe. Thank you
My "Boost Planter Box Sales" video covers stains and sealers :) and other questions that might pop up :)
How can I order your plans.
I love your designs and want to give it a try

Super beginner here, and don't want/need to invest in brad nail gun. What would you suggest in place? Galvanized 1" finish nails? Tx great video...
Stick with a nail that doesnt have much of a head so it blends with the wood, sell a few boxes and use the profits for a nail gun :) Harbor Freight has them for pretty cheap
How are you pricing these in your area?
$120 in my area with current demographic data :)
I might have this video mix up but you mention once in one of your videos you were using non galvanized brads from harbor freight ? Been wanting to ask if I heard that correctly or please correct me ? Thanks for sharing again !
I use 18 gauge 1" nails from Lowes, non galvanized, three seasons (plus winters) and no rust or failure issues
1/4" lip on all sides so you add a 1/2" total to each board :)
Thank you! In the video you mention you had 11 cedar boards, but in the description you say you only needed 7. Did you use 7 or 11 boards?
The plans show 7 pickets, but you duplicate the cuts on one of them 4 times :)
@@WhosTheVoss but in the beginning of the video you literally counted 11 boards (time - 17 seconds) i am not understanding how that only means you need 7 boards. Did you have 11 and only use 7 boards?
How did these last through the snowy winters?
I live in illinois, check out my "Boost your planter sales" video to see an all natural box from two winters ago, they hold up nicely :)
