I think the rooms are locked so you're only with the people that share a room with you. You can go to the girl's only floor and if you put all of your important things in a locker, there's nothing to steal.

I'm a very quite private person and people in the USA are extreamly hard to live with. Its like everyone is trying to see who can slam their car door or doors in general the loudest. This has just been my personal experience.
