It is understandable, but they have a powerful platform and voice that regular people don't. If anything, those who have been outspoken before all of this should be praised. @@seatbelts365 but it isn’t incumbent upon them to risk their careers for the NEGLIGIBLE impact that hearing a celebrity speak about Palestine has. I care about Palestinians, which is why I crawl up my local congressmen’s ass about it. If these performative activists actually gave as many fucks as they say they do they’d be devoting that righteous energy to writing letters, phone calls, organizing demonstrations outside capital buildings, etc. but they won’t. Most of the people who get so incensed by celebrities “not doing enough” will refuse to do anything that requires actual work unless they can also make themselves look good doing it. These kids are even worse than the silent crowd honestly, because they make the rest of us look like twats and actively damage the real work we’re doing and our image a cohesive political movement rather than some stupid kids on the internet. Same goes for the “pro-Hamas” crowd. We’re trying to stop a whole ass genocide, not racist tweets, cancelling and deplatforming random people who aren’t involved at fucking all isn’t gonna fix shit.

I'm an epidemiologist specializing in Neglected Tropical Diseases and that parasite story made me unreasonably excited. They're what got me into public health in the first place - I could seriously talk about them for hours. Parasitic infection is a huge underlying factor in a lot of major global health crisis - they can worsen the effects of HIV and malnutrition (schistosomiasis can even make it more likely to contract and spread HIV), and exacerbate poverty by keeping people out of school and work for extended lengths of time. The efforts in eradicating guinea worm have been a huge step forward for public health. It's so nice to see NTDs and parasites spoken about in a global health context that goes past "ew tapeworms".

People need to start understanding that it’s ok to have an opinion on something. That doesn’t mean they have to share that opinion with the world. Do you really think Taylor Swift is going to bring peace to the Middle East? Come on now. Just because they’re celebrities, doesn’t somehow make their opinions any more valid than yours or mine. Not to mention, you’re only concerned with their opinion if it coincides with yours. You’d be canceling them anyway. You realize, this is creating a no win situation. You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. I appreciate the younger generations trying to use their voice for change. But, having a new rendition of the Salem Witch Trials, isn’t the right way to go about this.

Particularly when it's become such a big topic there's plenty of easy to access resources for learning. I think a key point you're missing is the people protesting this don't see this as a generic geopolitical issue or conflict but an active genocide. Nobody would've gotten a pass for having no opinion when the Nazi's were genociding people.
Blocking people on social media is a tool because it directly impacts their money and earning potential. The same way if you boycotted certain actors TV shows by the hundreds of thousands that would be a big message. Sure, you can say that blocking some celebs isn't that much. It just keeps getting worse. When they burn hotter and bigger, nothing comes back. We loose our firefighters, homes, wildlife. The whole forest burns to a cinder, not just the underbrush. The lack of plants means when it rains there’s tons of erosion, fish kills, then run-off overwhelms rivers and streams causing spring flooding. It’s tragic. Thank you for covering this, Phil. @lfrands 16 дней назад +1

@@birdygamer5224 in many cases, it’s the heat that’s beneficial. For some pines, their cones only open with fire, so that’s how their seeds disperse, some things like morel mushrooms are only found in burn areas, and regular clearing out of undergrowth means the big trees are healthier and happier, with less competition. The undergrowth usually bounces right back with a smaller fire, and the crowns of the big trees are untouched. But not anymore. Now it’s all toast and ash, way too hot.

I'm originally from Lithuania so I got to see the portal exhibit there when I went home to visit. I think because both cities are much smaller and because of the difference in culture compared to both the US and Ireland, there probably haven't been many, if any, incidents similar to the ones occuring with the NYC and Dublin portal. Its also possible that shifting locations to a less busy area might mitigate some risk of incidents reoccuring.

Phil! The worm story actually made my day!! I have type 1 diabetes and my insulin pump blocked overnight, meaning I woke up with dangerously high ketone levels. I’ve been in hospital all day so after watching this story I asked the nurse, and apparently me having such acidic blood could’ve killed off certain types of parasitic worms in my bloodstream. I mean yeah, I probably didn’t have any in the first place, but not having to worry about evil vampire worms is a positive in my book!
Now I only have to worry about the other thousand types you mentioned…

I was writing a paper last week and asked Google a bunch of questions looking for scholarly and credible websites and articles publishing information related to the answer. This Google AI transition is going to seriously hinder the ease with which I can search questions for academic papers and may drive me to other databases or ways to search the internet. Truly a sham and a shame and a bad direction for search engines to go in

Always happy to hear Canada mentioned in the news. How ever it's important to get the facts right. In Alberta we did not get a break from the fire season between 2023-2024 as a lot of fires burned through our incredibly dry winter. This issue has only gotten worse over the years with no clear plan to end it in sight.

"We need to cancel celebrities who don't speak up about what's going on in Gaza"
    - Includes Jenna Ortega and Billie Eilish who have spoken up
"We need to cancel celebrities who don't talk about Gaza right now"
    - Lizzo speaks up about Gaza
"We need to cancel Celebrities who didn't speak up about Gaza who are only talking about it now, but didn't talk about it months ago"
Like what the hell? Do y'all not realize how self destructive this thinking is? You're basically saying that Celebrities need to be cancelled regardless of what they do. Let's focus on what's actually happening in Gaza and making sure people in strip are getting the aid they need as opposed to looking for an excuse to bully celebrities. Like for example; let's talk about the fact that in the last 24 hours Isreali activists raided aid trucks and smashed boxes of food that were supposed to go to starving people in Gaza.

Billie was seen wearing the pin and then seen with a Starbies not long after the Oscars so there’s that.

I feel like people trying to "force" celebrities in to speaking out or doing more is always going to result in people screaming that they aren't doing enough. I think for some, the only way a person will have done enough is if all they do is speak out for what they view as the "right thing" and even then, it still wouldn't be enough.

That’s because they don’t actually care. If they did, then they would be going out and doing it themselves.

Agreed! Furthermore, it feels an awful lot like people trying to bully celebrities into believing the same as they do, but they have a right to believe that either side is in the right - or to not feel a moral imperative to speak in support of either. It's an insidious way of manipulating someone to support your cause, and should be ignored by society in general to avoid giving them traction.

@@Kuchhhcrazy how people want celebs to talk on social issues when at the end of the day it doesn’t help. Kendrick Lamar talk about social issues and the culminated in him using rape and sexual abuse allegations for cash. Maybe rich people should advocate for what they believe and their fans should understand that celebs are people with opinions in a position that breads greed. Also they’re already rich so forcing them to say something probably isn’t the best way to get them on your side.

Honestly, regarding celebrities speaking out, I have to say that when you are a celebrity, you are automatically, by extension, an influencer. We've arleady seen countless times in the past where celebrities have spoken up about social and political issues and it has aided in not only the support of those issues, but the awareness as well. They actively chose to keep silent about it because of a potential "hit" to their popularity. And now, once there has been a noticeable decline in their following due to their own silence, they are putting out their words and support. But it's not because they think it's the right thing to do. If that was the case, they would have done it BEFORE they had some kind of backlash for their silence. It's being done as placation. "Here's my words so that you can THINK I'm cool again and stop blocking me." Which only goes to show that the digitine works. Celebrities nowadays prove time and time again they don't care about anything except their own wallets and, when that gets affected, they resort to placation. The point isn't "Speak up, please." The point is "You've already damned yourself with your apathy and there's no coming back from that."
