This was an amazing source of very thought-provoking ideas! Ancient Buddhism teaches that consciousness is an innate part of the Universe, and Animism is the belief that all things in the world have a spiritual essence and are animated, meaning they have agency and free will. To see the forces that were responsible for bringing the Universe into being as living agents with consciousness (Gods) suddenly doesn't seem so far fetched! We "modern" humans think that our science is supreme over these old creation stories. One day we may realize that our science is just another way of explaining the same story. We may come to understand that the forces that brought the universe into being are more like entities (Gods?) learning as they go, just as we are, and that all of these deities also lie within us waiting to be balanced, just as these qualities learned about balance in this ancient Aztec story.
