- Times are tough for a lot of people these days, but the desire to participate in the car hobby doesn't go away just because inflation on food and bills eats up all your extra cash.
While none of the things we talk about here are completely free, all are within the capabilities of someone living barely beyond paycheck to paycheck, in an apartment or small house with no garage...and as a bonus, one of them can actually become a great way to make extra money or become a full time profession!

This is TOTALLY me. I had the money, NO time, or cool vehicle to work on. I got injured at work and ended up on disability. I started building 1/24 scale models. We ended up buying my wife's sons '65 C10. I couldn't get it to run, so I blew EVERYTHING off the frame except for the cab. Started collecting tools, then body parts engine parts, engine dress up parts, and now, 4 years later, I'm putting it all back together while doing the body work. Baby steps, NEVER giving up and learning from UTG and other people. Thanks, Tony!

Right the know how, and no financing. Or to have the financing and no time is equally as bad. While sailing the opposite was true. I had lots of financing and no time.
This literally is the best video I have seen since discovering UTG garage, and wish it was the first one I had watched.
It's as specific as anyone needs to get their bearings and a foundation to build on. It still takes something to start up.
But someone starting where I am with nothing to start with except know-how and documenting the ascention is beneficial.
I look back at the first physical transition I made and the results were remarkable. I have a plan as I try to recreate it.
So cars won't be my first channel. Taking back my health will be. I need to start a new channel for this.
Back when I wanted a go-cart, dad bought me a lawn tractor. Took off the mower deck and let me loose on the neighborhood. Drove that thing all over and never had the cops called. Other kids with go-carts had the police called every time. Learning how to tie the governor with bailing wire was fun! learning about engines and how they work was priceless.
Uncle Tony, you are the man, I have learned more from you than anyone else, and always leave here with new useful information. Please, never stop doing what you're doing.
Cleetus showed me drag racing, vvg showed me how easy it can be to make something outta cheap cars, and you have showed and inspired me to build my mopar pickup, I slowly buy parts over Tine and spend extra time fixing and reusing what I can to finish my truck, can't wait to get on a strip

47yrs ago I found a broken lawnmower in the garbage draged it home and learned how to fix it via a book from the library, got it running after a few weeks of tinkering & saving from my paper route . Ended up cutting lawns made enough to buy a mini bike. Then fixing , tune up's oil changes sharping blades for everyone in the neighborhood . By 16 I had my first car , everything was easier to learn just from learning the basics . Turned wrenches for years and never turned away a job I knew nothing about , we never stop learning .It's a great job and hobby, they say you never work a day if you love your job. I have to agree, it's like going to school with boring teachers talking about stuff you could care less about, I never learned much in school but at 3:30 when school got out I was learning life skills.
I work on my cars in a gravel driveway. I hope to upgrade to a concert slab with a carport eventually. Maybe a garage in a few years .

Tony, you are spot on. I’m the same age as you, and I built car models as a kid. Got my first motorcycle at 15. First car (1964 Falcon) at 17. For years while raising a family we couldn’t afford anything new so I drove hoopties and fixed them up.
I’m now retired, have shop next to my house with my Harley, my wife’s late model Caddy and my’69 DeVille show car.
It can happen.

Here I am 80 in Western Australia with my dream 97 low mileage no start Corolla on the carport that I probably shouldn’t have bought. There is an electrical fault that may come back to the ECU. I just got down on my knees and looked how to take it out for testing. 4 screws - easy. I just feel so happy that I can enjoy myself so much with a broken car. My other car works which is nice for chasing parts. Ancient but still a gear head! Thanks Tony.

Since I work outside ,the 38 degrees it's maintained all winter (because mild winter) has been a godsend, I'm way ahead of schedule.
I absolutely love the attitude of this channel. Trying to raise the common man up. I love the you sacrifice not having them lift and a proper welding setup, just for the rest of us. In 1968 i got a new MTD/Columbia mini bike, i remember that day very clearly, trying out three different bikes at the dealer, i rode the hell out of that bike, as for models i built so many, mostly hot rods, but some 60's F1 cars, i entered contests and had a best finish of 2nd, after awhile you tear the models apart and modify them, so you end up with boxes of parts left over, and then i would trade one of my boxes with friends for their boxes of parts, i built a beautiful black 57 chevy, it had a big block out of a dragster, and behind the wheel i had the skeleton from the lil-coffin, one arm on the wheel and the other hanging out the window, i picked up a new 32 ford model at value village for $5, i also have some other model that are half finished 55 chevys, i'm going to create something fun. PS i still have my model trophy in my living room, 1976 lol
I have been a gear head since around 1966. I've worked on cars, trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment. I'm now retired and I play with antique garden tractors. They are cheap, relatively easy to work on, and I enjoy using them around my yard. I've picked a bunch of them for free. Some become parts tractors and some I pickup. Its fun to be able to rebuild an engine in one day. Good Luck, Rick
resonated a lot with this video. i’m 20, work at a coffee house, pay bills, rent etc. fanciest tool i have is a harbor freight air compressor (christmas present) i have a 77 nova ive built with craigslist, u pull it and facebook marketplace parts. 350, t5 5 speed swapped. next is differential gearing, got a guy who said he would give me the right gears for free somewhere in iowa. whole car has costed way less than 5k, it’s my first project

And don't let that car get away from you; these easy to work on gas-powered "toys" are gonna be in high demand in another 10 years or so. There's a shift in the market 'cuz it's one thing to WANT a new EV, but it's a totally different thing if the government says you can ONLY buy new if it's EV. CA is gonna do that, and already used cars in the State are going up in price.

Btw the etype Jag, I have seen a few here at car meets in Ireland, the bus like steering wheel is one inch from the door panel so you are not gonna be a good fit for that! The backend spin out like crazy on wet roads and you don't ever wanna change the inboard brake pads either! They do sound and look incredible, go to England and hire one for the weekend of your dreams is the way to go on that.
The Scale Model bit really hits home for me. Back in 2019 my grandfather passed away and his favorite care was the 68 Road Runner. He never got to own one unfortunately. I was able to find a model kit for a 68 Road Runner and built it for him. I must have put at least 25 hours building that thing, but it really made Me fall in love with the Road Runner. That Model now sits in a display case next to his urn.
This channel is great in keeping me inspired to continue to squeeze the most out of my resources.

My friends and I built mini bikes out of a Schwinn bicycle and a horizontal shaft Briggs and Stratton. About 55 years ago.
Thanks for these vids. I have always been a "car guy" I had to go on SS disability about 5 years ago and I am hoping to get something cheap to wrench on and your channel is inspiring.
I don't think anyone can start a successful youtube channel.
But there is one wonderful hobby between minibikes and scale models, the RC cars. I know guys growing from RC and ending up in real racing as driver or as crew chief.

Hi Tony, I was born in '59, and I grew up with car and airplane models. I did a career as a pilot, and I still enjoy my '69 GTX and "70 Olds cutlass. You give good advice. I can't afford a wing car, etc. I told a young gal that was interested, the only way today is to buy losts of wrecks and pieces of classic muscle, and try to fabricate a project.

I’m one of those lucky guys who doesn’t have the money for a lift or big fancy welders, I use the exact flux core welder you have as well as a 120v plasma cutter which works greatly for me, I’m thankful for the cheaper stuff I have because I was able to afford them and they work, I have enough tools to get buy but need much more but what I have works, a engine build for me takes some time and saving and a mishap is not planned in that build because I really can’t afford to blow up a engine, I have to be very careful checking parts and putting everything together basically doing everything as perfect as possible so hopefully I can avoid a mishap, I’m one of those guys Uncle Tony is talking about, I’m thankful that he does things the way I have to so I can see how it works and learn to make the most of what I got, do I want a lift and all that fancy stuff, of course 😂maybe someday I will have it but not yet

I have 36 subs and have no idea how to edit. But I still press on thanks to channels just like this to inspire me, especially when I may not feel like going out to the garage.
So I'm down in the desert in southern California camping. Lots of nomads camp in my area so I'm surrounded by people! My rear diff pinion bearing starts making all kinds of noise so I run into town, pick up a bearing kit for an 8.5, run back to camp and take it apart at camp and rebearing my rear diff! All the folks camping around me are flabbergasted that I rebuilt my rear diff next to my camper. I explained to the crowd of people that "IF" they watched uncle tony's garage like I do they would also do things like this! Before I watched uncle tony's garage I was not nearly as bold or capable as I am today 😃
My Honda CT110 also known as the Postie in AUS was my first bike or two wheel car I ever got, best thing in the world and I still got it and it still runs and rides.

Tony , i really like your Show, you do things low budget, am retired and on limited budget, now building a 56 lincoln with Mchuloch Blown 368 Lincoln Yblock , to run on the street, old time drags and Standing Mile , been working with 50s licolns since about 57 , have 57 merc with dual quade 368 and stick trans, one of the first Super Stockers.Liked it when you help the young guy with the Polymotor , saw on run a t Engine Masters in 2016, we put in a 368 Lincoln, made 520hp. keep up te good work. My first car model was a model A, learned about suspension at age 7. Now retired and have about 50 metal models of cars I'll never own but great to admire. I enjoy Jay Leno's show for seeing rare and odd cars. You can learn a lot of history. But I have never figured out why Mr. Leno can't drive between the lines. To add to your proposal for younger gear heads to do youtube videos, I've never understood why someone hasn't done a series of finding tools and parts at yard sales or estate sales. Great screwdrivers and wrenches for 5 cents. Large Fleet sockets for 50 cents. Floor jacks, jack stands, creepers, even a large spot welder cheap, cheap.
You even run into guys with old cars and hot rods or something they're building. It's a fun Saturday. People would enjoy your searches and finds and you could make some coin on it at least enough to pay. Happy hunting.

Something similar to mini bikes; motorized bicycles, kits are cheap AF, and you can actually (depending on your local laws) commute with them, there's a whole community around them and people modify them
I was stunned when you mentioned E-type. I am a die hard Mopar guy, but when I see an E-type, I get shook up to the core.

Man I've got a nice little dip from a chunk of gravel stuck into the side of my nose from my 5hp mini bike. I had changed gears on it so high you had to run and push it to get going but then it would fly. I face planted on a ridge of gravel on the county road when it got away from me. Road rash deluxe. I still remember the cool breeze in my open wounds on the way home. Good times!!
Thanks for everything Tony, just came back from Chryslers on the Murray (Largest Chrysler meet in the southern hemisohere) and I your saw at least a dozen peices of your merch. You've defenity helped me become a mechanic and to work on all of my cl cm valiants with hemi 6s (one soon to be worked 318 with 360 heads) even drove my 245 4 speed '76 cl ute from Sydney to Wodonga and back 1400 kms (900 miles) with no issues.

2 cycle 1/5 scale rc cars are a good way to get involved as well. I just got my first 1/5 scale, and it's so much like a real car; it's very surprising to say the least.

Great advice! I spent many hours as a child making model cars and still have some of them! I never had a mini bike, but rode some and loved them! I got my first car at 11 (56 Ford that I paid $20 for and never ran) and had a 55 Chevy when I was 15 (paid $125). I'm in the middle now (neither poor nor rich) with a home with garage, many tools, 3 cars, two motorcycles, and yard equipment. I do as much maintenance on them as I can. I also have a youtube channel, but it's related to music. I appreciate your focus on things that people without unlimited resources can do.
Hey Uncle TonyI I was fortunate enough to get into cars when they were cheap like the moped. But another option is working on riding mowers. Get most of the basics from them also. And make the wife happy with the grass cut! Your a good ambassador to this hobby!!!
I used to tell people to get an air cooled VW to learn on and build confidence. Now one that barely starts with a rusted out floor is over $10K.
Good way to build a business as well .
EVERYONE has grass that needs cut .
I used to make bank with essentially " throw away " push mowers and the occasional riding mower , getting them for free or nearly nothing , fixing them up or using them for parts , over the winter . I would have 50 - 100 mowers ready to go come the middle of spring when the grass is getting tall .
And most mowers needed little more than a basic cleaning and tune up to run like new again .
So for maybe an hours work and $20 in parts , I would have a mower that sold between $50 - $100 , $250 -$500 for riders .
I also did repairs on a lot of different equipment , from chainsaws to outboards , often because established places often refused to work on older machinery , especially outboards .
This can turn into a full time business if you let it .

84 Honda urban express that I bought with my lawn mowing money.
It used to be a hoot riding around with a couple of buddies when I was like 12-13.
When it got tired and needed rings, it really needed a bore job that was my first real in depth repair.
Of course dad helped, and after we got it bored at the local motorcycle dealer, dad took the cylinder and worked his magic on the ports(he used to race flattrack back in the 60s).
He went mild on it ,but it needed help. The exhaust port gasket was about the size of a quarter ,but you could barely get your thumb end in so he flared it in nicely up thru the port.
The transfer and intake ports were a little better but took some cleaning up.
From then on it had more power from idle , harder pull in the midrange and really pulled up top!
He definitely did it right, as it gained everywhere.
In fact, the top speed went from 29 to 37 on the flats because now it could rev higher ,I didn't change any gearing.
Now I could leave my buddies in the dust!!
We would do 20 mph pulls 😄😄
And forget about it ,I was outta there.
Lol whoops ,missed the part about mowers.
What I'll say is do pulley swaps and engine swaps.
Mine does 30mph ,and went from a 12hp to a 30 🤣
Roll on wheelies at 15mph 😄

I drove junk fixer uppers for a couple years until I had the money to buy my first foxbody. I’ve always been on bikes! I remember my first dirt bike, JR50. I outgrew that fast! The 86 KX60 was the next!! Damn when that 60 would come on the power!!! As a kid it was scary fast!

I've got a 1977 Sparta Foxi GT moped, its got 4 shocks with a 420lb weigh limit, Its green with chrome to the max. Its the blingyest moped I've ever seen and I love it.
I seldom comment on videos but this one required it. I was born in 1958 and I took the path you described, except the models came before the minibikes. Once I got my first minibike I was always on it. Your advice and motivation here are wonderful. Now at 65 I have a '67 Belvedere II, two minibikes and a Harley. I'm in that 50% group that you described. It's what keeps me sane in this new and ridiculous world in which we have to live. Thank you....and your upbeat attitude in this video seemed exceptional this time. 😏

Dad used to race flattrack motorcycles and that was her excuse.
Anyway when I was 13 I saved my lawn mowing money and got a moped.

I had plenty of friends with minibikes and go karts and stuff, and there's just something about getting on one with a little Briggs engine ,hitting the gas and it moves under its own power.
No pedaling like my bicycle.
Now at 50, yeah I've got cats and they're fun and all, but I have an absolute hoot of a time on my riding mower.
That's because it's been pulley swapped to do about 30mph ,and I've swapped the 12hp flathead for a 30hp Briggs v twin.
To me, the cool thing about small engines is if you want to test a theory and try things ,it's so much smaller than a car and easier to manage.
And cheap,if your theory doesn't pan out you don't have alot of money invested.
If it works , extrapolate it to a car.
I have a die-cast and matchbox collection of most of my favorite cars. Including Christine, Greased Lighting Two James Bond cars, the Flinstones car, Up in smoke 63 impala, several fast and furious cars, the Chevy in super natural series plus assorted Nascar and classic cars.
This year LEGO put out a kit of Doc Brown's DeLorean-based time machine from "Back To The Future"

Tim here, i cudnt agree more!!!...i'm an avid model builder, have been for almost 50 yrs.....taught me alot, while havin my brothers do the real stuff.......meanwhile, i'm not affluent either, so, besides (yes i got a '64 Pontiac Tempest Post car, with big motor, etc) all that, i got a 70cc 4sp semi auto bike i blast around my property......so i got 2 out of 3......i'm not gonna do a u-tube channel, but i use models, and my 70 cc, to have fun, create, and enjoy, while when my resources allow, i spend time with my '64.......so far, 11:0's/7:0's on pump gas .......GREAT vid......love it!!....PEACE to you sir!!.....

Don't forget that if you want to give it a rake ,and jack the back end up just cut shackle extensions from the parts trees.

This is a great video you made! Now, the contents of this video really suit me fine! I mean I'm a hot rodder with no garage, little money, little tools and some experience! So what do I do??? I'm a serious model car builder! I can build the car of my dreams and more. I don't have to be a slave to them because you can't drive off with them, they don't need gas or leak oil etc etc. But I have learned a lot, i started building models on my own when I was 8 in 1971 and didn't get serious about models til I was in high school. I have helped others with their real things and have given tips related to hot rodding. Building models and getting involved with others real things are real close parallels. I guess I have the best of both worlds as your video clearly states so. Thanks again for bringing this to light, everyone in the car community one way or another needs to see this!
I love you Tony, for the simple reason that you are a great teacher. I'm 74, and can tell you that you are right on about model cars. I have always been a gear head, and I built many of them. I learned how to paint, and always to read the directions before starting to build a new model. I don't know how many times I had to remove a engine or something else before the next correct step, but I never forgot the pride of accomplishment when it was done. I'm a little older than you, but I know what you are trying to say. Great post, all the old AMT guys are with you.
Mini Slaghammer rocks! KJs work is awesome! I've been a car modeler most of my life, and it still amazes me how few people see car models as an educational tool. I learned a lot about cars by building models and studying diagrams in my parent's encyclopedias (remember those?). I sometimes refer to my real cars as nothing but big model kits with 3,000 parts.

My son has been trying to get me to make RUclips videos for awhile now. I don't know if I have the skills. Or the time. Between working 40+ hours at the body shop and selling used parts on eBay I'm pretty much spent. I'm definitely thinking about it though
Maybe you could have your son do the youtube side of it, camera-manning and uploading - younger people typically don't have any problem doing that stuff well. It'd be real nice if your job will let him shadow you to record...
This is so relatable. In the dead of winter, when the outdoors are at their worst, I thoroughly enjoy finescale model building as a way to bridge the gap between car/cruising seasons and make the ugly weather more palatable. Gives me something to focus my creative energy on, so I'm not sitting around bored, and makes me look that much more forward to playing with the real thing once spring hits. The only downside is, as with everything else these days, model building has become expensive too.
The funny thing is, my uncle used to live down that way.

Tony thanks for having a heart for the people who don't have the resources to do things with the fancy building and fancy lift and tools. I put myself in the lower part of the 50% I have a 2 car garage welder floor Jack's decent collection of no particular brand of tools decent compressor and air tools and I can get by on pretty much all normal automotive repairs and body work. It's all in what you can afford and what you like to do.
Im below of you in that spectrum. I only have jackstands/floor jack and home depot mechanic tool set

Uncle Tony, been a fan of yours for many years going back to your days at Cars Illustrated. Anyway, another example of low Buck gearhead thing, expanding on the scale model thing is slot car racing. You take a scale model car and put a slot car chassis under it. I actually have quasi replicas of Bottle Rocket and Plan Z ( nowhere near the detail and quality of the ones KJ built you but not only are they fast, I actually used your weight ideas in building my Plan Z (I call mine Plan V because I used a Valiant model). Type slot car drag racing in and check the hobby out.

Just make videos on what you are doing is great advice. Someone out there will find something useful in almost everything. It doesnt always have to be action packed or crazy exciting. My highest viewed video is how to do rear brakes on a pontiac sunfire by yourself. Never thought that would take off but its because thats a car that high school kids can afford and they want to work on it themselves
I love all of your videos, have learned a few things and been reminded of many others watching them. With that said, my first wire welder was a Century 85 amp flux only unit which I soon upgraded to a 120 amp flux that could be "converted" to run gas. I'm sure that your Harbor Freight flux welder is great, I know many people using them in their home shops, including a few professional welders. However, many of the newbies that I've talked to say that they went that route because they didn't think they could afford the bottle and gas. They don't realize that you don't need it right away. I always recommend buying a welder that can run flux wire when needed and solid core when wanted. I have a very nice, 170 amp welder and still run flux wire about 1/2 the time.
As far as pit bikes and model building, my pit bike is an old Honda ATC-125 and, at 54 years old, I still build models in the winter here in Northwest Ohio. It only got to 26 degrees here with a wind chill of about 8. I spent part of the day cleaning up around the shop and, the rest of the day working on 1/25 scale replicas of my tow rig, trailer and drag car.
Rc cars are super fun too.
You can go nuts with those things.

I have a 1956 Plymouth Savoy 4 door sedan. It's rare enough that I won't meet another one on the road anytime soon... but it's not worth a ton of money, but, I'm in the "forward look club", people will ask about it because it's a forgotten car that they don't ever remember seeing. I get all of the conversations... including the ones who see the back and comment on my "57 Chevy". I laugh and say, Come back and look at the whole thing again. Right now, I'm nearing the end of replacing the entire brake hydraulic system. It's been over $600 just for parts. I'm my own mechanic. And I've worked as time allowed. I'm 5 months in. Happy to say all the parts are installed... not happy that I have to remove a few parts so I can correct a few minor leaks. But hopefully in a few weeks, I can confidently drive her out of the garage and meet/converse with these people again, and show off one of my favorite of Virgil Exnir's designs.
I think the minibike is a great idea, I like the models too but I don't have the patience to build them nice.The RUclips thing just seems like a big headache.
Yer pretty Awesome Uncle Tony ! Old guy ! Had a stroke , forgot more then I remember after a stroke , Which made me retire at 51 yrs old . I’m 61 now and. Have got my Dream car I prayed God for in 1972 . 1956 Chevy 2 dr wagon . And I’m in the beginning of restoration was a gear head ! Yrs ago but never did more than motorbteans swaps, grill, fender .basic .but 68 yr old cars almost all need floors rockers as does mine . Just got full floor and full rockers and bought a wire feed no gas ( dumb 20 more bucks messed up) and I’ve rebuilt upper and lower control arm bushings band ball joints . Converted to disc brakes replaced single pot master to double disc/drum for 70 nova . 11 inch rotors s-10 calipers . But some one buggered the upper door hing . And I need doors to close corretley to cut out rockers one at a time . Anyway I’m top of bottom 25% I spend my entire allowance my wife gives me every month into my new Girl friend she says I have lol 56 Chev . Lol 481.00$ every month since dec . 350 mystery motor almost ready to put in straight used see why I got . Have the 3/4 inch forward side motor mounts and weld in crossmember , drive line could be issue . But and a th350 stock rearend but someone put traction bars on it over the years . I love messing with go karts and minibikes while im waiting for parts or machine work or when im low on cash. Its awsome, I honestly have more fun with it sometimes because the engines are so so so simple and if I break it, oops time to find another $50 engine on marketplace

Your mini bike experiences hit close to home. I thought it would be cool to have a mini bike to take with the RV to get around. Last summer son-in-law gave me a pile of mini bike parts. I put something together but the old Clinton motor looked like it would need a ton of work to be viable. I had a 212cc Predator motor kicking around, so I installed it. Turns out I created a monster, I almost looped it when the clutch engaged. My wife was watching, her first comment was "you better put your helmet on." The major part of the project was a brake. From what I was able to find out was the original had a metal plate that dragged on the rear wheel. Not good enough. In the pile of parts was brake caliper and a wheel with a disc on it. Unfortunately this combination wouldn't work on the one I built. So I fabricated a mount and used the caliper to clamp on the drive sprocket. I don't know if this is a common setup or not but it works great. I scrounged most everything to build it, I think I might have $30 in it. A few bucks for a paint rattle can, some vinyl for a seat and a few misc fasteners. I've hardly ridden it, too much for the driveway, not legal on the street so anxious to take it camping where I can ride it. Overall it was just fun to build it.
