This really was a very good match. Watching it again it was much closer than I originally thought. Tye did a better job, especially towards the end, of controlling the mat space; but Meregali had more "near takedowns" and forced scrambles on/off the ground.

@@Grandroborox he cant, the entire time, Nicholas hugs the leg, which prevents leg hook and Tye from turning his body, the posturing from Nicholas is enough for survival breathing (neck straighten, trapped shoulder push, elbow push, and lie on his back on top of opponent's body should be enough to create air space ), Tye can not risk more energy wasted squeezing, he could gas out if he keep on squeezing .

Quick reminder: Meregali had never competed in no gi until roughly 7 months before this fight. Bonkers. Danaher stated that in an interview. He says Meregali met him on early 2022 and said he wanted to be the champion both at the ADCC and BJJ World Championship. Danaher then told him “Sure, let’s work things out for you to compete at high level at the ADCC from 2024 onward.” To what Meregali replied: “Nope, we are going to fight for both titles this year.” (2022)
Danaher told he was absolutely impressed by Meregali’s mindset and work-ethic.

I love sweep singles, but it's not the best move for MMA or BJJ. With out shoes, it becomes much harder to hold on to. Especially in these long grueling matches, there is so much sweat running down the leg, it's very hard to hold on to. When I wrestled, sweep single was my go to move. In MMA and BJJ, I moved to double legs and traditional head inside single legs.

Agreed, also Meregali kept retreating to the edge of the mat, indicating he was having trouble dealing with Tye's pressure.
In Olympic wrestling (Greco Roman and Freestyle), controlling the centre of the mat is a HUGE factor in passivity calls, and I think it should be a factor in referee decisions of sub grappling too -- especially in razor thin matches like this where most of the action occurred on the feet, neither athlete secured a score, and both had about equal number of almost-successful offensive attacks.

I don't know how you watch this and don't see the immediate problem? Jiujitsu guys have no game on the feet. Not only cant they get and keep each other down, but they are lumbering around like fucking Frankenstein leaving everything open all the time. The takedown opportunities are all over the place, but they have terrible wrestling fundamentals so they can't see them. At one point the announcer says "meregali is difficult to approach he is always reaching..." That is not good. That is exactly an opening that anyone with good wrestling can use. The state of takedowns in jiujitsu is disgraceful.

You think this kid is natty? Unlimited cardio weighs less and still matching "giants who are gassed up" strength ( your words) I think you need to use some critical thinking. Meregalli is natty the twins are not, sorry to burst your bubble dude but mica galvao is juiced and lost to the afro twin. The twins are 100% shooting up epo.

Definitely shows the glaring flaws of jiujitsu at the elite levels. Dedicating your whole life to a sport where its mostly about size and leverage. That Darce was dead to rights on anyone Tyes weight class. Any traditional sport like basketball, tennis, soccer even football you can use skill and speed against bigger guys and be able to hang your own weight. In Jiujitsu guys will just shrug it off and look so dominantly one sided it can be interpretated as boring and outclassed. 90 percent of Tye style and moves just dont work on 200lbs guys
