Great vid. I'm 15 days in learning kendama and I'm an old fucker at 46 and loving it!! I sesh each day as much as I can and I'm glad I found your channel I've subbed
Awesome vid! Im really glad you mentioned the sale kendama thing, that's a tip I have not seen anyone else bring up. I definitely bought my fair share of OG tributes and slick tamas! Glad to see you posting again, here's to 2020 being a year of growth for the channel
So I'm super new to Kendama. I literally just heard of it a few hours ago and bought one online cheap about an hour ago. I did a tiny bit of research on Google and RUclips and found your channel. I am very interested in this. Needless to say I dig your video. Right from the start I began learning with the pro-tip you gave first about putting glue to save the point. That is very helpful information I wouldn't have known otherwise. So thanks a bunch! I'm now very curious to check out other videos on your channel and hope to learn thing or two that might really be useful! Thanks again for this video!
hell yeah. i love this. this video paid off for being the most scripted video of yours. i believe a lot of people will benefit from this, myself included. thanks!
Thank you! I hope so. Like I said at the start of the video, I would have loved a video like this when I started playing. Hopefully a new player will find it helpful!
Great video man ! Nailed a ton of key points for sure. I do have one other tip that was a huge factor in my overall progression etc. And that would be to film yourself ! Of course it doesn't have to be all the time, you don't even have to post your clips if you don't want.. I didn't for a long time. Anywho I feel like filming allows you to really push yourself to get better. You can track your overall progression and you have something that motivates you to really grind for that certain trick.. Keep the content coming man love your stuff ! 8)
Great tip! I definitely think people should try and push themselves and filming can be a great way to keep track of your progression! I filmed myself for a while but stopped because I started taking it a bit too seriously and getting frustrated when I didn't lace. But different tricks work for different people! Thanks for sharing dude!
Beech is a hardwood. It's a softer hardwood than maple, but it's still a hardwood. Pine is an example of a softwood. You can press a dent into it with your fingernail. Dude, the way kendama players talk about wood, sounds like how they debate about "Tone Wood" for electric guitars... which is something silly, cause everybody knows it's the strings, pickup and amp that's important! Since we're on the subject, why not Paulownia? I'm sure that's the best wood Japanese kendama makers use.
true but this is referring to kendama and the wear and tear you'll see from these woods. I don't think anyone is gonna directly translate that to wood working
Bro this was an awsome video keep it up brotha miss the uploads!! Also Tip: double bearings for easier snake bites or anything that involves that part of the string coming out
thankful for this vid dog, just got back into ken from 5 years ago lol, crazy how a 20 dollar kendama now is way better then any ken i had 5 yrs ago lol.
Man, it's crazy how much Kendamas have changed from just 1 year ago 😂 glad you picked it back up again! Let me know if you have any more questions. Always happy to help
Awesome video! Really helped out with the info. I just got my kendama in the mail yesterday from Kendama USA, it's an Ozora kendama with a red ball and I believe it's made with beech wood. The website never specified about what type of wood it was made from
Thanks for the video mate! Yesterday I got my first Kendama (you were right about juli!), a Krom Pop (luckily one with rubber paint and bigger cups). Now im gonna glue my spike! (No pun intended) Also thank you for mentioning that sticking the tama on the spike is difficult at first - gave me confidence that I am able to master it one day!
just a little info for the future both those woods are technically a hard wood. a soft or hard wood is determind by if the tree loses its leafs anually or not, soft woods are usually evergreens. thanks for the tips, you're right licking the bevel is a strange one!
Great video! I would like to know if it's a good idea to decorate a clean kendama ( I mean just the wood pieces, no colours or draws on it ) with a pyrograph, that pen that is really really hot and burn/engrave wood to design it. thanks!
Tip: if you've got a super rough/snaggy part of your kendama that the string always catches , sand it down first with rougher sandpaper, and then finer sandpaper to smoothen it out. I've done with with chipped cups as well, so it's super smooth where it's chipped, just a little flatter.
Joseph- I would recommend it for anyone, I got it, my friend got it, and his friends friend got it. We were all satisfied. Sweets kendamas r always good quality. Would highly recommend from my experience. But this is just mine and my friends opinion.
I wish there was a video like this when I started out, I will definitely use these tips when I get my new kendama today- I’m stoked ! Also, any tips on how to juggle? I’ve been watching tutorials and been practicing them daily, but I can’t seem to get it down at all, anything helps :)
Juggles are soooo tricky to get down dude. It really just comes down to practicing them over and over until you get the motion. Something that helped me a little bit to get them more consistent was actually using an older dama I had and cutting the string so I just had the ken and tama separately and I would just stand right next to my bed and practice juggles like that. The string was always getting tangled and it was super frustrating for me, so I just cut it haha. It let me get the juggle motion down much more consistently without having to worry about the string getting caught or tangled up. Just be careful since there is no string attaching them the tama might get away from you and bit the floor or something. That's why I suggest standing next to your bed and practicing over that. Hope that helps! Keep shredding dude 👍
KEN CULT Thank you so much, I appreciate the tip and how fast you replied haha. I will definitely give that a try and will continue to shred on. I look forward to more of your content!
Hell yeah! Enjoy it! Sweets Kendamas has a ton of begginer tutorials you can start with. The first time you get all the cups in a row and end with a spike it's the most hype moment ever haha
YES yo great vid! Like your style of video the music, edit, and your commentary. Idk how to explain it but the tone of your voice flows well. Also I agree with spending a little extra I remember when I was looking for my first dama (8 months ago still a scrub) I was gonna buy some cheap random dama I saw on the internet. But it didn't come with an extra string or any accessories AT ALL. I worried if I got that HOW LONG would the string even last? So I kept looking and found sweets. I liked the whole name and colorful tropical aesthetic because I thought Kendamas looked like ice cream anyway LOL and it's cool. So for my first dama I got a Sweets Prime Radar. IN BLUE!! 💙 Still have it and I JAM IT EVERYDAY. Recently replaced my string after like literally 7-8 months of jamming it. (Last so long) And it feels BRAND NEW. The extra cash I spent 100% came through when I made the purchase and 8 months later. That's WORTH. Awesome 👍 keep it up broski!
Right on dude! So glad you enjoyed the video! Sweets is an awesome brand and they have some great damas! One of my first damas was a prime radar too but in red! Absolutely loved that thing. Keep shredding!
I've heard of someone doing this before! But I've actually never tried it myself. Give it a shot! Let me know if it works out I would do the same technique as the super glue. A few thin coats 👌
Thanks for putting this out there! Just got into kendama...and I’m such a newbie I actually thought that Sweets Kendamas were the only place in the USA that sold Kendamas...yeah. So, there’s that. But to be fair: they have a lot of info and I have 2 of their Kendamas (both “boost” models, my folks got me a third, the sort of tutorial boost radar one with the stickers that teach you what each part is.) now “why on earth is this chick getting multiple Kendamas from the same company without doing any research?”you may be asking. Great question. Because I’m a lame idiot and marketers BEST easiest mark out there. No, but really, I found out about Kendama because of cardistry, and I’ve been bedridden for almost a year now because of botched medical procedure, so standing/walking/sitting...really anything but lying on my back is supremely painful. That said, I don’t want to have every muscle in my body atrophy, so I have to try and stand for as long as possible. Guess what? Learning Kendama? Really great incentive to stand because you are not focusing on the pain I’m forcing my brain to focus on learning something difficult, which it isn’t until you get past the big cup little cup and landing a spike, I got that in a day, but the rest? Yeah, those tricks will keep me getting out of bed. But thank you for all of the free advice and telling me what should be common sense, but I think people get into comfort zones when it comes to shopping; take clothes for example. It’s a pain, if you’ve found a place that sells a pair of jeans that fit like a glove... but that doesn’t mean you should stop shopping everywhere else. But I bet most everyone here has fallen into that: because it’s hard finding the perfect comfy pair of jeans! Anyway, thank you for all the free advice, but being that I can only practice 5-10 minutes at the most right now, I don’t think I’m in danger of damaging my Kendamas just yet. But seriously: the glue on the spike? Amazingly clever but totally logical idea! Thank you again and hopefully you are safe and well during these crazy weird times! Good time to practice your Kendama skills though, yeah? All the best, Hillary (the gullible buyer from Pennsylvania🤦♀️)
I personally haven't tried any alternatives, but I would give it a try! It seems like it might work and worst case scenario the stuff just chips off and you know it doesn't work. I doubt using it will make the wood more brittle or anything
Haha same dude! Just learned about it recently. Super wide bevels are a bit harder to wear in with a quarter, but it works well with most tamas! Give it a shot next time you bust a fresh one out
Something that's done in woodworking and pottery to smooth and harden a surface is called burnishing. If you want to harden the tip of your spike, rub it on a smooth, hard surface, like metal. Press it into the back of your combination lock, and rub it around. You'll find that burnishing compresses the wood, smoothing the surface, and making it more resistant to damage.
Tipp: When you try out new tricks such as juggling (or when you let go of ken and dama at the same time). do not practice the tricks over asphalt or stone, if it falls it can damage the wood (cup and spike of your kendama). better practice this trick over grass or indoors over a carpet.
Hey man that was really helpful! I have one more question: is there any tip to help the sticky paint last longer. Because for lighthouse or lunar it's just 10 times easier with sticky paint and I wonder if I should buy a new kendama when it's worn off or just stick with it. What do you do or other players do you've heard of? Thank you :)
I know this is old, but sticky clears and gloss type paints can have oil, dirt, and dust build up on them over time, making them slick. Wiping your sticky tamas down once in awhile with a damp paper towel (just water) and it will make it feel brand new again.
what kendama should i buy after kendama pop? there is sweets starter, sweets double stripe fade and for example on kendama house there is a nick gallagher amped pro mod but its on sale. can you tell me what will be the best, i am not super advanced but i dont want to buy multiple kendamas, just one.
I love DWI damas! But there's quite a few brands I haven't done reviews on yet like Krom and Lotus that I also really like. Just a matter of time, but I'll get to it eventually. Deal With it is a fantastic brand you should be very happy if you get to work with them!
@@wayward_artificer not about the hype, these videos just take a long time to make and I haven't had time to make a DWI vid yet 😂 I'll get to it sometime though! Thanks for the support bro
Great tips man! I noticed the GG v4 shape somewhere there! will you be reviewing this one? I absolutely loved how it played but unfortunately snapped the corner of my small cup with a colliding butterfly 😭
Not necessarily. I think it really is personal preference. I'm 6'4 and play with around a 7-8 finger string, but there's several younger kids who play with a 10+ finger string. It's all whatever you like playing with!
I glued my new maple kendama a few weeks ago and I’m starting to notice the end is starting to flatten out a little bit. I have been using it pretty well every day sometimes for over an hour or 2. I was just wondering if I should try and re apply the glue or if what I’m going through is normal? If so I’m prob in need of a new ken in a month or so. How long do kendama really last? Thanks for all of the help though! You earned another subscribe! :)
Sometimes the spike can wear down sort of quick. If you're just starting out the spike definitely wears a bit quicker though since you're probably missing quite a lot of spikes. My first few damas have COMPELTELY flat tips 😂 If you've got sandpaper you can actually re-sharpen it to a point and then apply a few more layers of glue, but if you don't then unfortunately the spike is probably just gonna keep wearing down. On the next dama you get try adding a couple more coats of glue and try to spike a bit more gently if you can! I was spiking pretty aggressively early on and although it does making spiking more satisfying, it really does take a toll on the spike when you miss. Hopefully that helps a bit!
Yeah Krom is dope. Some of their shapes are kinda weird though. I'd reccomend a pro mod on the 2good shape, or the Pop if you're looking for a cheaper option
I do actually. I have Kuon, Rule of Rose, Blood will tell, and Haunting ground. All the heavys. I'm working on completing the NTSC PS2 library. Have you ever done a game collection vid?
@@jaketheps2punk I haven't! I actually had another channel where I did a couple other videos on gaming. I camped outside of GameStop for the SNES mini when it came out and I did a vlog going to the Portland retro gaming expo but nothing on my collection. I have an Instagram you can check out at @nexxtgames if you want! It's totally inactive now, but you can see a good chunk of my collection there
I filmed it in January and mentioned people getting new kendamas over the holidays, but I wanted to include anybody who is new so I said "even even if you're watching this in July, this video is for you." Just in case someone finds this video later on in the year! Sorry about the confusion. Probably should have used different wording to keep it simple haha
@@kencult its june and i first used a kendama yesterday and i have bad memory so i really had to check the month cuz i thought u guessed the month for me
Great question! Honestly most damas I buy these days come with a bearing with them and sometimes even extra bearings if they're generous! Buying a pack from Kendama USA or sweets is good but if you're willing to wait a little while you can find a pack of 10 bearings for only a couple dollars off eBay but most ship from China and will probably take a couple weeks at least to get to you. The bearing size you should look for is 1.5 x 4 x 2 mm. Good luck!
Hey KenCult, does Lovely Knots feel like or closely feel like standard string like the ones KUSA or Sweets use? I'm using cotton craft store string bc I prefer 12 finger length and that's what's locally available but it's harder to work with compared to when I was using standard string b4
100 PERCENT! It's super addicting and landing a trick is very satisfying you just want to keep progressing. Lots of Yoyoers enjoy it because they share a lot of elements. There's also a ton of ways to play a Kendama in different styles. There are "string players" that use a ton of the same concepts as yoyo. Look up @adrianeeban on instagram. He's a yoyo and dama player. But I think you'll enjoy it fam 👌
Such good content brother, never commented on this when you posted it to the wrong Reddit account 😂 already showed this to 3 of my friends who got into Kendama!
I'd say mentally switch the "don't buy sale damas" to "don't buy cheap amazon knockoffs" because there is a big diff between a discount and a bad dama imo
I totally agree! I wasn't trying to say all on sale damas are bad, but if you're new into kendama and don't know what you're buying yet it can be misleading. Especially since all of the descriptions say nothing but amazing things about the kendama. This makes sense since the company is trying to sell them, but for new players I think it's just a bit confusing. As long as they know what they're getting 👍
Licking the bevel is not strange, I've heard and seen weird tips from people whose sports involves ball! Baseball - someone somewhere must've done this and inspired the kendama tip of licking the bevel. Football/soccer - touching the ground near the goal post, then licking what he touch, and hugging the goal post before the match starts, along with some discreet ball licking, is among the trick goalies use in my country. Maybe licking the bevel isn't so bad.(it taste like raw ice cream stick!) All I know, all the tips mentioned above works, so, I'm gonna do the bevel licking from now on.
KEN CULT ayo! Just thought of one thing I feel like is a huuuge tip for beginners that you didn’t mention in the video: BREATHE! Breathing intently while playing helps soooo much

soft woods are usually evergreens.

do not practice the tricks over asphalt or stone, if it falls it can damage the wood (cup and spike of your kendama).
better practice this trick over grass or indoors over a carpet.
I love these types of videos
Hey man that was really helpful! I have one more question: is there any tip to help the sticky paint last longer. Because for lighthouse or lunar it's just 10 times easier with sticky paint and I wonder if I should buy a new kendama when it's worn off or just stick with it. What do you do or other players do you've heard of? Thank you :)
i think you can buy somewhere tama without ken, but unluckly you cant bring stickiness of tama back
I know this is old, but sticky clears and gloss type paints can have oil, dirt, and dust build up on them over time, making them slick. Wiping your sticky tamas down once in awhile with a damp paper towel (just water) and it will make it feel brand new again.
What kendama would you recommend for a very sticky tama that stays that way for very long?
Legendary tips thank youuuu
I like that you said that if we watch this in july we guess what im doing
I keep coming back to this video! Extremely useful in my first week of play!
Just ordered one. Gonna hit myself in the nuts so much.
Most definitely. Remember to hydrate
what kendama should i buy after kendama pop?
there is sweets starter, sweets double stripe fade and for example on kendama house there is a nick gallagher amped pro mod but its on sale.
can you tell me what will be the best, i am not super advanced but i dont want to buy multiple kendamas, just one.
krom pop*
Will nail glue work for the spike?
I haven't tried it! But it might. Use the same technique as super glue and try it! Give it a few thin coats and let me know how it works!
It works great! 👍
Why no Deal With It kendama reviews. I hope to work with deal with it someday
I love DWI damas! But there's quite a few brands I haven't done reviews on yet like Krom and Lotus that I also really like. Just a matter of time, but I'll get to it eventually. Deal With it is a fantastic brand you should be very happy if you get to work with them!
I hear you. Probably get more view and hype that way.
@@wayward_artificer not about the hype, these videos just take a long time to make and I haven't had time to make a DWI vid yet 😂 I'll get to it sometime though! Thanks for the support bro
KEN CULT not saying that with any animosity my dude. Keep up the hustle
hahahaha def was not expecting.a shoutout 😂 thanks homie
Fo sho dog 😂
You should review a lotus Kendama
Great tips man! I noticed the GG v4 shape somewhere there! will you be reviewing this one? I absolutely loved how it played but unfortunately snapped the corner of my small cup with a colliding butterfly 😭
Very informative! 😊👍 thanks
Glad it was helpful for you!
We need more videos!!!
Do you think string length should be shorter or longer depending on your height?
Not necessarily. I think it really is personal preference. I'm 6'4 and play with around a 7-8 finger string, but there's several younger kids who play with a 10+ finger string. It's all whatever you like playing with!
My current fave is lk standard from learnkendama
GG Kendama V4 Zebrano 😍👌💯 6:14
Great video! Thanks.
6:13 or 6:14 brought me here.
“Ballin like an athlete, but got No Jumper 🏀”
"..or you are just watching this video in July" Me: Looks at calendar- holy shit it's July !
Good ol ken cult 😌
Ok thank you! That helps a lot!
What’s that kendama before the Christian fraser mod?
It's a new No Jumper Kendama! This colorway has been sold out for a while now though
Why is the Kendama world so odd? Yet, why am I getting into it? Lol thanks for the video. Is the brand Krom good?
Yeah Krom is dope. Some of their shapes are kinda weird though. I'd reccomend a pro mod on the 2good shape, or the Pop if you're looking for a cheaper option
You play Kendama and you collect games. I'm subscribed now!!!
Haha right on! Thanks for the sub. If you actually have a copy of Rule of Rose then I'm super jealous lol
It's totally inactive now, but you can see a good chunk of my collection there
KEN CULT I'm checking out your insta now. I'm glad I ran across your channel
July? Did you mean January or did you film this awhile back ?
I filmed it in January and mentioned people getting new kendamas over the holidays, but I wanted to include anybody who is new so I said "even even if you're watching this in July, this video is for you." Just in case someone finds this video later on in the year! Sorry about the confusion. Probably should have used different wording to keep it simple haha
@@kencult its june and i first used a kendama yesterday and i have bad memory so i really had to check the month cuz i thought u guessed the month for me
Do you buy your own bearing beads or do you buy them straight from KUSA, Sweets, etc.?
Great question! Honestly most damas I buy these days come with a bearing with them and sometimes even extra bearings if they're generous! Buying a pack from Kendama USA or sweets is good but if you're willing to wait a little while you can find a pack of 10 bearings for only a couple dollars off eBay but most ship from China and will probably take a couple weeks at least to get to you. The bearing size you should look for is 1.5 x 4 x 2 mm. Good luck!
How did this become a hobby again? It’s so interesting!
Where was this when I started lol
Know how you feel dude. Idk why no one else hasn't made a video like this yet. I feel like it's been needed for years
Literally getting into this in July
And tricks hum?
Hey KenCult, does Lovely Knots feel like or closely feel like standard string like the ones KUSA or Sweets use? I'm using cotton craft store string bc I prefer 12 finger length and that's what's locally available but it's harder to work with compared to when I was using standard string b4
Yup! Lovely Knots feels identical to me to the standard string that comes with most damas
So I'm a yoyoer. I don't know if I will like kendama. People apparently like... LOVE it, from what I've seen. Is it a lot more fun than it looks??
100 PERCENT! It's super addicting and landing a trick is very satisfying you just want to keep progressing. Lots of Yoyoers enjoy it because they share a lot of elements. There's also a ton of ways to play a Kendama in different styles. There are "string players" that use a ton of the same concepts as yoyo. Look up @adrianeeban on instagram. He's a yoyo and dama player. But I think you'll enjoy it fam 👌
@@kencult Bettttttt. Okay, I'll see what I can do. Might buy one of those 20$ Sweets ones.
Wow, yeah i just picked one up and watch this in July haha
I just recently bought a kendama because it looked like a fun puzzle and HOLY SHIT is the rabbit hole huge
Such good content brother, never commented on this when you posted it to the wrong Reddit account 😂 already showed this to 3 of my friends who got into Kendama!
Hahaha right on dude! I'm so glad it's useful to you all. Thanks for all the support homie!
We carry a little spray bottle to swell the bevel up and not have to lick it.
Super helpful!!!
Nice Video!
My guy!!!✅✅✅
This video is WONDERFUL, darling!
YOU'RE wonderful ❤️
KEN CULT ayo! Just thought of one thing I feel like is a huuuge tip for beginners that you didn’t mention in the video: BREATHE! Breathing intently while playing helps soooo much
@@bjornreece5629 Super good tip! Absolutely necessary to breathe while you play. Thanks for sharing!
Krom keychain bevel coin ftw! Works so much better then a quarter
why did you know I'd be watching this for the first time in July lol
I’m thinking the same thing rn lmfao
