The Underrated 1852 Adelaide Pound - Australia's First Gold Coin

- The Adelaide Pound is my favorite Australian rarity due not only to its scarcity but the story that goes along with it.
I also should have mentioned, this coin was struck without permission from the Queens office. So the expression better to beg forgiveness than ask permission was certainly alive and well in Adelaide in the mid 1800's!
Thanks for watching and for a wide range of collectables, coins and banknotes from all over the world come on down to www.ThompsonsCoins.com
Coins to me are affordable works of art. Each coin can depict a time, theme or a legend from a particular country. They can reflect history and even sadness depending on the country or time. Even bullion can be art. The era it was made, the pour lines, maybe a defunct mint or even from a country that doesn’t exist anymore. That’s why I’m hooked.
The ancient coins you had in the last video, imagine the stories they could tell.
I completely agree, the more you learn the more you enjoy! Thanks for watching 😄
This video just advertises the joy in collecting pieces of history in any form. Another engaging vid backed up with the historical knowledge. Could ONLY be a thompsons coins video 😩
You're too kind Ryan, I appreciate both the support and your razor sharp wit!
5 dwt and 15 grains equates to about 8.6 grams, I wish my sovereigns weighed that much, I’d be a happy bunny!!! Fabulous coin Matt, but I can only dream!!! Thanks
Thanks for watching Jamie, collecting sovereigns is something that I've found to be really rewarding and you're right, a little extra gold in them would be quite a treat!
Thank you for sharing and this little history lesson.
I'm not Australian but I always enjoy learning something new.
My niche is French silver coins.
Thanks for the kind words, I have always enjoyed the French coinage and can see how the silver coins in particular can catch your eye!
@@ThompsonsCoins It's probably my chauvinistic side 😄
I will soon have new silver coins.
I'm also interested in gold coins but it's the budget that limits.
Really enjoy hearing the back story to notable Australian coins. Great video, thanks Matt!
Thanks for the support mate!! ☺️☺️
Hey Matt i just love old coins and by the look on your face so do you. NIce Video.
You're absolutely right Paul, it's the best hobby there is and the community is really supportive too which is great! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the video. Very interesting history on that coin.
No worries Mark thanks for checking it out!
Interesting bit of history & a nice looking coin that I haven't seen before. Thanks Matt
Thanks for watching Phil!
Absolutely stunning considering it has survived 170 years!
I agree! Seeing coins like these in such high quality both fascinating and a real privilege for me! Thanks for watching Kate 🥳
Hi Matt.
Nice coin and thanks for giving us the history of the coin too!
Thanks for watching Ivan, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
@@ThompsonsCoins watched and Love all your videos. Very educational and love your enthusiasm Matt! Keep up the good work 👍🪙
Hello Matt , wow yep that’s a ripper
Really interesting coin, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole today after reading about the 1918 Perth mint half sovereigns, which have a bit of a story behind them. Some interesting articles on the Perth mint site
Thanks for watching!!! The Perth Mint has a number of fascinating stories attached to it and hopefully when I'm in Perth next month I'll be able to visit the mint again! ☺️
Very interesting video. Thank you.
Thank you very much for watching Richard!
Beautiful. You lucky dog! ❤️
I am VERY fortunate to be able to handle coins like these and the excitement does not ever wear off on me either 😄
I love how you pin the history to the coin , good work mate 👍
Thanks for watching Kayne! I was a little shocked that you weren't the first to comment 😉
@@ThompsonsCoins I would have been but you got my attention real fast when I knew what coin you were showing 👍
Thanks Matt very interesting and well put together vid 👍😀
Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channel I really appreciate it! 😊
Very cool coin Matt . ❤️👍 Great informative video. Cheers 🇦🇺
Thanks for watching Mark I'm really glad you enjoyed it 😄
Sir I couldn't be happier to be a sub to your channel!!! I LOVE your excitement, teaching spirit and all around kindness. The history talk you put in is an extra bonus for me LOVIN to absorb knowledge. As you said mention if we wish...so 1 of my favorite coins I have is my ms65 1900o/cc Morgan silver dollar. In my tiny opinion it is an underappreciated and the actual last CC Morgan. Thank you again sir very AWESOME!!! Stay safe and Peace from Kansas!!!
Thank you so much for watching! I had no idea that there were mintmarks stamped over others on any of the Morgan dollars, that's a fascinating coin and I can see how it would form a centrepiece of your collection, what a great story 😊
Hello Matt. Did you say underrated?
My dear friend, you must be joking!
Yes, of course you are. This coin is magnificent especially the cracked one as you said. I did a fair bit of study on these coins BUT I still learnt more today.
Thankyou again my friend. P.s. the bit I didn't know was that some got shipped back to London. Probably to have a crack put in them 😁!
Thankyou my friend Matt Thompson! 🇭🇲🤗
Thanks for watching Robbie! 👍
Love old coins ... silver circulation coins .. the most ..
Thanks for watching William! Are you collecting old silver coins to accumulate silver or do you look to put together date/type sets?
Thompsons coins has everything! Always a fun time scrolling through the site
Thanks for the support Oscar I'm glad you are having a good time scrolling through the site, it took a lot of hard work to put together so it's nice to hear it's appreciated!
Hey it is Scorpion. You are added with this channel now to!
Hi Scorpion, thanks for watching!!
really interesting thanks Matt...have heard you mention them before, but not seen.
Thanks for checking out the video mate! It was a real privilege to be able to make this video and I am glad to hear you enjoyed it!
@@ThompsonsCoins how often do you come across these coins, and those like the 1930 penny? Surely cant be that often...would keep mine squirrelled away if I had any...😲
@@mcduncanpresents9389 Very rarely indeed! They often end up in very high level collections too 🤓
Very interesting!
Thanks for watching Marie! 😊
Your numis knowlage is quite a score for Bullion Now, I wonder if you get calls from The Little Coin Shop to run down and give them a hand with something a customer has brought in ?
I'm a South Aussie guy, feel kind'a proud that Adelaide had the first Aust gold coin. Cheers.
They don't do any buying so I am able to keep the two worlds very separate which is great! It is really pleasing to see Adelaide be put on the numismatic map with this coin. I think it can be easy to get caught up in Sydney when it comes to numismatic items of significance.
Thanks for watching!
Real Beauty!! That is an impressive coin! I have no graded coins and have some older American stuff but not sure if it is worth grading...
Thanks for watching! Always nice to have a celebrity in the comments section on these videos!!
@@ThompsonsCoins Celebrity!? One day maybe...for now I am closer to celery then celebrity...
The rarest coins I have had and just sold not long ago which helped to grow my stack for metals was a 34/35 florin and a 1938 crown which were hard to let go but I know in the long run it would be worth it , the next lot out of my collection that I’m looking at doing the same with is a $1 star note and a 10 shilling star note but I’ve got to get the right amount for them from someone who knows what their looking at and won’t rip me off cause I want enough to get or be close to getting a full Australian gold sovereign or a 1986 $200 gold koala coin at least to make me happy and to add to my stack.
It's tough sometimes to part with a rare coin but it sounds like your making a sensible conversion! If you ever want to discuss doing something with your star notes feel free to drop me an email at matt@thompsonscoins.com and I'd be happy to work something out with you 🙂
@@ThompsonsCoins thanks Matt
I wonder how many people there have one of these and don't know what they are worth. I know a lot of people here don't have any idea what a 1916 D Mercury dime are worth. Some know about the 1909 s VDB but not many. When I tell people that I talk to about coins, they are shocked at some of the things I tell them. They all usually say that they are going home to look in coins that someone left them.
It's funny how interested people become when they learn about how much value they may have tucked away in a drawer somewhere! Thanks for watching 🙂
A much better design than the first type Sydney sovereign in my opinion
So you're saying 30k is on the CHEAPER end for this coin? 🤯
Surprisingly, in that sort of quality it could be viewed as quite the bargain in fact! Thanks for watching!!
Nice, what's that one graded Matt?
Another celebrity in the comments section! This was an MS61, thanks for dropping by Eric! 🥳
Hi Matt,
How do you go about grading the coins, and how do you ship them to send to the US (packaging, insurance and so on) as sending something potentially worth a lot seems a little risky?
First
VERY quick!! Well done 🤗
