From Season 1, Episode 6, "Mr. Monk Goes To The Asylum": A confused Monk is found trespassing in the home of his late wife, Trudy, and is sent to the Medford Psychiatric Institute for observation. Monk meets the hospital's brilliant director, Dr. Morris Lancaster, as well as fellow patients John Wurster (Kevin Nealon) - an overly empathic, Zelig-type ("I'm a detective too!") - and Manny, a man in his thirties who still believes in Santa Claus. Wurster tells Monk about a murder that took place at Medford four years earlier and Monk soon finds himself on the case.

Monk Synopsis: Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

This episode is really scary. You really get help in a psychiatric ward. I've been there. But if the doctor is a criminal, you're completely lost.
Similar concept in society -- who will police the Police..?
The function of a psychiatric hospital is usually just to stabilize people before they are discharged. Long term patients are usually just medicated as hell with group therapy twice a week and a “care team” that doesn’t listen to anything you have to say because you’re crazy and you don’t know what is good for you.
@@tobyfitzpatrick3914 This one is much worse. Normally, the people police the police, at least to some degree. Stuff like the BLM movement, revolts, protests and full on revolutions is how that normally happens. The issue with this one though, is that the person in power has the power to declare a person crazy.
They literally have the power to make someone an unreliable witness. When you have that, you can't even have the truth go out to the public if the crime wasn't committed in the middle of a public gathering. You need the majority to know it was a crime for the rest of the people to accept it as truth.

It's scary how easily a corrupt doctor can legally have you committed against your will and keep you held there as prisoner for as long as they like. It's always been a genuine fear of mine ever since I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest as a kid.
In real life an involuntary psychiatric confinement requires some kind of judicial order. Such an order can't be issued by just one doctor without review, and usually requires other psychiatrists to review the legal when it is issued and annually thereafter. There are usually avenues of appeal which involve advocates for the patient. Psychiatric nurses are also required to advocate for patients and take potential misconduct to the medical board. It's basically impossible for a single corrupt doctor to orchestrate such a confinement.
Also involuntary treatment is only an option if the patient demonstrably poses a threat to themselves or others, or is unable to care for themselves. Just having visual halucinations doesn't cut it.

Also, I’d be freaking out if I was in Monk’s position in the straitjacket.😳

The actor who plays the psychiatrist in this episode also played another psychiatrist in Law & Order: CI. That episode was really good too.
The actor's name is Dennis Boutsikaris. He also played a psychiatrist in the 1989 movie The Dream Team. Starring Michael Keaton, Christopher Lloyd and Peter Boyle.

Craziness is a meaningless word used for how you make people feel so literally everyone is crazy because everyone seems crazy to someone and that's all there is to being crazy. The word "crazy" doesn't have any actual meaning beyond "this word feels fitting." It's a feeling word, not a meaning word.
Sanity is how in touch with reality you are. Most people are not sane, but even sane people are crazy. In fact, sane people are crazier than insane people, since most people are insane and see sanity as crazy.
Sanity isn't just a feeling word, it's a meaning word. If you say someone is insane, you're actually saying a certain thing and you can be wrong. You're saying their understanding of reality is way off, so if they understand reality fine, your wording is incorrect. If you say someone is crazy, you can't be wrong because you're not actually saying anything except how you feel about them.

That word is frequently used to discredit others and essentially gaslight them into thinking that they're burdensome in some way or another. Regardless of intention, anytime one uses the word "crazy" to describe another human being (or anything for that matter) they are attempting to diagnose that person, which is inherently ableist. This perpetuates the stigma centering mental illness and further isolates those who have mental health conditions.

Can we get the scene where monk and Harold blame each other for the deaths of the other members in their group therapy session in Mr. Monk goes to group therapy (Season 8). Another suggestion is season 5-8 cold opens.
I wonder what’s with people in straight jacket have to needle for? Like for example this guy in a straight jacket 03:36 and then ready for his needle 03:50 - 03:53 - 03:59 - 04:02 - 04:07 - 04:11.

Monk is part of the reason I sought an Autism evaluation. Turns out I'm Autistic and ultimately, knowing has been for the best.
Note: I know Monk has OCD but that has significant overlap with Autism. Anyway, it led me in the right direction.
I actually got tested as well, but I was too young to remember, and I was never told. Honestly, I was pretty sure of it by highscool, since it explained several of my issues. Still, it never bothered me, it was more of a "Oh, that explains a lot" type of thing.
@@akumakami64 same with my ADHD. It's noticeable, but i can manage. I can make most of a normal life and even tho i still go trough hard times and depression from time to time knowing just helps. A LOT.

Sheldon was right that he's not crazy but he was so-for a lack of a better word-atypical to the point his mother thought it was worth getting him tested. I consider myself very fortunate to have answers especially due to the fact that women typically have a harder time getting diagnosed.
@@akumakami64 I was involved in a study at one point and it was made clear that I was different from my peers but that was ignored so I coped the best I could til burnout hit. By high school I, too was pretty much sure as well. Isn't it interesting how we just can sense it without anyone telling us? Kudos to you for receiving answers.

It also seems reasonable that the doctor might have opened the cabinet with his key, then put the key back into his own pocket.
Not likely, but not far-fetched either.
It would be a strange habit since he'd need to immediately reuse the key to lock the cabinet.
As he said medical cabinets unlock but only lock again with another turn of the key. That's why he said "its what anyone would do"
I believe that, when you unlock a cabinet lock, the key becomes lodged in. Most likely, Dr. Gould would've taken the simple route by keeping the key in the lock until he'd close and lock the cabinet back up.

Right but you wouldn't have been done when getting shot. The thing is, the keys were still in Goulds pocket when they found his body but the cabinet was open and drugs missing. So either he was shot after he opened the cabinet or was shot first and the killer opened the cabinet. He couldn't have been shot after opening the cabinet because you need the key to lock the cabinet when you finish so he wouldn't put them back in his pocket until after he finished and locked the cabinet back. So he must've been shot first then the killer opens the cabinet but as Monk said nobody would bother to return the keys back to the dead man's pocket so the killer must've had his own keys, hence an employee.

Adrian has done things contrary to his phobias many times in order to bring criminals to justice or to save people. That is the definition of courage.

@@tkayube His obsession to solve a case overpowers his obsessions related to phobias. Though it usually has to be vital (some emergency thing like someone about to get killed or critical evidence being tampered with). Makes for him doing pretty well as a detective consultant but would still interfere with him being an actual cop.

Those aren't registered. Even in California.
Bullets aren't registered. They get marks while being fired that correspond to your weapon. If you have a bullet and the gun it was fired from you check the registration of the gun to see who owned it.

🤩Certain skills are not accepted within some social frames. There is a french movie going on: "Astrid et Rafaëlle". Rafaëlle has got a very strong Asperger Syndrom but she is very gifted. Together they solve all sorts of causes - the handicap is a help on the on hand on the other hand it is a barrier, depending on the problem that has to be solved.

He's mentally ill--not crazy, but him being called crazy here was an intimidation and threat. Monk was in an insane asylum, so whatever he said was already 70% ignorable to most, and the doctor could destroy Monk's brain easily and make him permanently crazy guaranteeing a testimony Monk could try to give would be thrown out.
