    Save yourself a lot of future aggravation, have a scratching post (or two) nearby. Whenever he tries to scratch something he's not supposed to (couch, carpet, etc), take him off, say no, then go demonstrate scratching on his scratching post until he does it. He will quickly learn that is where you do that behavior it will save you thousands in home decor replacement. After a couple, or a few times he will learn and you won't have to keep doing it. Also, great choice in having a companion kitty for when no one is home. Best wishes.

      Great advice..redirecting Toby to an appropriate spot to scratch is good. The problem with allowing him to claw your chair is there will be no boundaries, so all upholstered furniture will be fair game. Try different types of things and see what works best!

      11:41 My tip would be put some kind of scratching post or surface RIGHT next to the sofa (even one of those scratchers designed specifically to go round corners of couches etc) - if he comes to see you when you’re sitting there and has decided that’s a good location to be scratching, if you’ve blocked off access to the actual chair/sofa but provided something suitably scratchy in its place, he should get the idea that’s the scratching place, and save your furniture ☺️
      I got my cats last May (Maine Coons, but I also love Ragdolls!), and when they showed interest in scratching on my velvet sofa arms, I immediately put a scratching post there on one side… I bought one of those wraparound corner scratcher things with the intention of putting it on the other side, but it was designed to be something you literally put a screw through the fixing at the top and bottom and drive it in to the piece of furniture, which kind of defeats the object of protecting the furniture in the first place! 😆 so I’ve left that as a flat horizontal surface for them to scratch on to give them some variety (right now my boy cat Harvey is having a snooze on the floor while lying on it, but he’s now enormous and for some reason lying on it sort of diagonally/horizontally, so barely even the front half of him is on it at all 😄)

      @@EmmaVB82OMG Maine Coons 😍 I love them so much they’re so gorgeous. My oldest cat is part Maine Coon, but she really doesn’t look like it she’s so small not even 7 pounds 😂 But the has the best personality ever I love her so much. She’s so talkative, so playful, and sooo affectionate. Do you have siblings from the same litter?

      I've had cats since 1971 and have never had a problem with cats scratching my furniture. If you do what I mentioned above while they are kittens, you won't have a problem with it either. Exceptions can be if you bring a kitten into a new home that had an existing cat residing there who scratches furniture and teaches it bad lessons. I've NEVER had a cat destroy furniture after teaching them to scratch on a scratching post. Cats NEED to scratch, all you need to do is provide a place for them to do it and demonstrate for them.

    Advice: Get a variety of scratching posts (shape and material) to find what Toby likes to scratch. If he likes something more than the chair, he'll scratch the post instead. Also, throw an inexpensive blanket over the chair. The blanket will take the damage instead, and it will not be as appealing to scratch.

  • @susan945
    @susan945 Год назад +31

    Everyone is right about the scratching post thing. Your chair, to Toby, looks just like a scratching post, the material is way too fun for him to resist. Whenever he starts to scratch, just "redirect" him, take him to his scratching post, you can even scratch on it a little to get him the idea that he can scratch on it too, instead of the chair. That's how I trained my cats when they were little, it works. After a short while he'll forget all about your chair, cats are pretty smart & learn fast about what's okay & what's a no no to them. And yes, someone else said this too, get some cheap blankets for now to protect your furniture until Toby learns what he can take out his silliness on.

      Do you reasearch when looking for a ragdoll breeder . Real traditional Ragdolls are a pointed blue eyed breed . Make sure you breeder is a TICA and CFA breeder . Google your breeder name / complaints make sure nothing pops up. Unfortunately, since Covid there are more scammers than responsible professional Breeders. All good breeders practice early spay / neuter , give vaccinations, Mircochip and the kitten should come with documentation. Take your time , breathe… find a good breeder. Ragdolls will be a member of your family . Like none other kitty ❤️

    Yes get a scratching post. I had a small cloth bag that i put cat nip in, tied it up & pinned it on the post with a safety pin. It dangled down.
    It grabbed their attention and they go to the scratching post now.🎉. So glad you are getting Toby a baby sister. They will be so happy
    playing together. The breeder i use has kittens that look just like Toby from time to time. He will probably get very fluffy. He is so beautiful!
    I love the white eyeliner around his eyes.

    I've had 2 cats in my lifetime, I'll tell you, unless you get some serious boundary-proof protection for your sofa and train him to NOT scratch, etc., he will likely scratch your sofa to death. I've had other cat owners who had the same thing (unless they were declawed and that's an inhumane thing to do). He is beyond adorable, and hurrah he already potty-trained well. Cats are wonderful, enjoy the Journey.

    I recommend Trupanion also! One thing they do that other insurance companies don't, assuming the vet you go to is able to comply, is pay the vet directly. In other words you won't necessarily have to come out of pocket and wait for reimbursement! Plus, the representatives are so nice and helpful, and all of them love animals and care about your pet. Good luck!

    Great video - loved this special event! Alessandra was a delight and baby Toby stole the show, naturally! So glad to hear Toby’s sister will be arriving soon, although be glad they are not super active Siamese kittens. I slept with my eyeglasses on for months to prevent losing an eye during Jasper and Austen’s nighttime romps! The Sleepypod is very nice, but a fully grown Toby the Ragdoll in there? Hmmmm I would save that receipt! A model with retractable wheels may serve your back better with such a big boy and girl in tow! Best of luck and congratulations!
    Hugs, Michael, Austen, Jasper and their baby sister Standard Dachshund Hildy, Albuquerque NM
    PS no no no Alessandra on your furniture being Toby’s scratching post! We want him to be a welcome guest in your travels, and once he imprints on sofas and chairs as being acceptable to exercise and scent mark, it will be his lifetime occupation! Redirection to appropriate places and employing Cesar Milan’s alarming and effective “CHHH CHHH” will solve your problem! Cats are just as smart and trainable as dogs, and my Siamese boys respond to training much better than our one-track-minded little hound Hildy does! Cheers!

    Reminds me of when I first brought my boys home (I have two Blue Point brothers). They were a little shy at first but once they found boxes and a pile of toys they were good. And I can confirm that when they collapse on your lap you aren't moving. Though now they have to take turns since they are two big to both fit now (18 and 20 lbs ). Those tiny lil paws grew into being bigger then a half dollar coin lol.

    I got to take my first cat home a little over 2 months ago. He was very scared and the first half of the day in the carrier, and the rest of the day underneath the couch. My heart broke how scared he was. I was afraid because he wasn't eating or drinking, so I put some of his food underneath the couch. He ate it, so I made a trial from the couch to where his food and water are. He ate and drank some, and stared at me with curiosity. He did come out during the nights, as I found my pillow from my couch on the floor and a small plant knocked over.
    The third day he was brave enough to come closer and smell me. He even let me pet him. Which is perfectly on time, as he had a little accident on the litterbox and he needed some cleaning. He let me clean him with a washing cloth, and he got more confident by the day.
    Now he follows me around the house. When I do my makeup he naps at my feet and enjoys living here. He also has a friend in my boyfriend's cat, also a ragdoll, and there are just the sweetest things together.
    It took some time, effort and patience from us both, but we have bonded and are living happily.

      Unfortunately your breeder did not socialize properly. Read a breeders reviews . Having a properly socialized kitten is just as important as having a healthy ragdoll kitten . All kittens are individuals.. Kittens will be afraid the first day home that’s normal . What you described is not a well socialized kitten . Smaller room is better , when you bring your kitten home keep your baby in one room . If they go under a sofa , bring them out . Cuddle your baby , also recommend sweatshirt with a front pocket . Carry your baby around . It is very important with a scared kitten you put in the time loving her . Best of luck honey , I hope this helps

The owner said that this was the last time she had kittens due to not having enough time because of working in the office after Covid-19, and yeah it shows. I invite people over to my house so my kitten gets used to different humans, and it's slowly working. He's not afraid of me anymore but were working on him being comfortable with other humans as well. Thanks for your tips! I will definitely buy a sweater with a front pocket :)

      All cats should have 1.5 litter boxes . Ragdolls are big cats , the litter box should be open and large enough for your ragdoll to turn around in . Also please use the cat litter that your breeder tells you. Changing your cat litter is the recipe for disaster. Always use non-scented scoopable litter and scoop often. Scooping is the same as flushing the toilet please keep that in mind.

    We bought home a pair of ragdolls at the beginning of July (Miso - a seal CP tortie girl and Mochi - a blue bi) and they took to our house and us so quickly. My father in law drove us home and came in to meet them. The moment we opened their carrier they were both straight out and exploring, giving him hugs and playing. They are so super cuddly and purry.

    I love Ragdoll cats , I had 2 that died one from FIP 8 months old and the other one 5 years old from kidney failure due to a bad breeder. I have one Ragdoll left a Bi color 15-12 years old doing well but he has hyperthyroidism his brother a blue mitted just died recently May 10, 2024 from a nasal tumor. He was bleeding from the nose and eventually died early in the morning just collapsed and died on our floor where we found him trying to get back to his chair. We are devastated it was a horrific death and very traumatic. We miss him very much and cherish the one we have left alive at his age. Yes, it is a beautiful thing when you get them as kittens but remember you are also buying a tragedy down the road and they will die eventually just like we will too. Though it is worth it to bring in a new ragdoll they are so nice and loving We cannot live without a ragdoll cat.

      all cats scratch unfortunately, its a natural instinct, you can counter that be providing a lot of scratching posts around the house or have furniture that are not scratch friendly. Hope that helps!

      Unfortunately the breeder or foster parent plays the biggest role beyond genetics in how a kitten turns out. I have always had Siamese since age 10, and they have been universally friendly, inquisitive, and great pets! My latest breeder of my two Siamese, Black Thai Cattery, makes a huge investment in time invested and in choosing which mom’s he breeds. Then literally from birth he and his family hold the kittens, take them on outings, accustom them to nail trims, traveling in a carrier, meeting other species (he has two Basenji dogs) and provides constant enrichment in his kitten room. Then he makes a time commitment to making new pet parents wait until they are 12 weeks old!!! A six week old kitten still needs his mother and siblings to teach him the rules of cat behavior. Lastly, getting two can give both more confidence. My Seal Point Jasper is more timid than his bold and outgoing 1/2 brother Austen, a Chocolate Point. Jasper misses out on fewer things because Aussie is there to lead and provide a lift in his confidence. Win Win!
      Best of luck!

      I got my cat from a random backyard cat with an unknown father at the age of 13 weeks. Tbh, I didn't know the info about breeding cats until I watched TCB's videos, that cats should be specifically bought from reputable breeders. Well, my cat isn't a specific species, so I wouldn't have been able to get her from such breeder anyway, and she was a million times cheaper than species cats as she's just a blended tabby. Bad thing tho, she has been acting sick since I got her.. her breathing is so fast, and she's suddenly unactive or biting and scratching us, or that her meows keep getting cut off, and she sometimes meows harshly, or that she swallows loudly, ir that sge leavs pee drops on the floor after using the litter box.. Idk.. I fear she has heart or kidney problems and that she'll be away soon... I'm so scared the whole time, and I keep checking up on her. I wish I never bought her as I feel like I'm just stressing myself out too much, and I keep getting heart strokes of fear for her. I even had nightmares that I woke up crying because of about her leaving so early. She's still just a 5 month old kitten 💔...

      @@Leen_AZ123 Indeed health is a primary concern with any pet. So even if a breeder is honestly trying to raise healthy kittens for health’s sake, serious breeders have their reputations at stake. I am so sorry to hear your kitten is dealing with multiple problems. Heart issues are common in cats. My Siamese Matthew who lived to nearly 22 years old had a heart murmur, so we were cautious about anesthesia and teeth cleaning procedures, and I gave him subcutaneous fluids 4 nights a week to help him cope with his hyperactive thyroid and to extend his kidney function. A friend’s cat died for literally qno reason because she would not accept any medication and threw such a fit clawing and biting they decided the stress of treatment was worse than her cancer. She died at 11 or 12.
      So all is not lost! Your kitten was lucky she was placed in your care because you are the best person to see her through life, whether it is long or short. Love her and let her love you. Do your best and know you are the right person for her. Things can turn around for the positive, so wait and see what happens. Good luck!

    Cat Butler, what is your opinion on cat bells? I don't think she would like a bell around her neck all day long. 😔

    • @mjc63
      @mjc63 Год назад +1

      Unless they are outside and you want to warn prey like songbirds, I am not a big fan of extra noise in my home. My Dachshund Hildy has her tags on her collar which jingle a bit. Her Siamese brothers Austen and Jasper do not wear collars inside so it is not an issue for us.

      Bells are largely unnecessary for Ragdolls, especially if you keep them as inside cats. Ragdolls will typically stay right next to you or in the same room as you most, if not all of the time! P.S. They hate closed doors.

    • @vsnrm5451
      @vsnrm5451 Год назад +2

      It can be very annoying to them, just imagine having a bell near your ears all day every day. There's even anti-bird collars made without bells because it's known to not be great for them, but if it's an inside cat I would really avoid having them wear a bell. I have to kittens that I manage to locate in my house without bells (they are in fact also scared of bells, had to remove them from a toy so they'd even touch it).
