Istanbul, once known as Byzantium, and later as Constantinople, is a city of such diverse culture and history. It was the capital of three great empires - Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. Both ancient and modern art blends elements from Europe, Asia and the Middle East, reflecting its geographical and historical positioning as a bridge between the East and the West. It is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, Europe and Asia. Constantinople became Istanbul in 1930, following Turkey becoming a republic.
The city’s art is a visual embodiment of its complex history.

In 2013, I just got out of a 3-year relationship. I was broken hearted & burnt out from work. I went to Istanbul for a week, my first time outside of the US. I fell immediately head over heels with the city and its people. I got out of the tram and looked lost. Immediately, a shop owner helped me get to my hostel. My first morning, I went to the Archeaology Museum then to Topkapi Palace... The next day went to Hagia Sofia then to the Basilica Cistern. The art and people of this city healed a part of my soul I thought was broken forever.
Came back 3 years later to visit the friends I made who worked at the hostel I stayed at.
I cannot wait to be back. Istanbul is one of those cities that grabs a hold of your soul. I will never stop recommending for people to visit it.

Thank you for the great details in your work. You made us proud of our history, really. As a Turkish man (44 yo), born in Istanbul/Florya, the greatest of all is Basilica Cistern by far. You may experience similar feelings in some other parts of the world for all other spots in Istanbul but you will never find a (man-made) structure like Basilica Cistern in any other place. You can only understand what I mean, when you go down there. Even in a bright summer day at noon, as soon as you enter to staircase, its dark and quite atmosphere, cool and humid air, wet walls, high ceiling, gigantic endless columns gives you chills. For me it is a true time machine that you truly find yourself in 1000 years back in all aspects. When you come out, you just turn back the civilization of our time from the time travel. And I guarantee you will not be the same person. Of course, this happens when you visit in low season, when very few people around so you really feel and enjoy the space, away from a crowd. I recommend everyone who reads this message untill here, to put it on his bucket list. You will not regret. All the bests.🌷

I was in Istanbul for the first time last november. It was a blast. I highly recommend the antiquity museum, they had beatiful pieces. While I think modern Turkey can open up a little bit more to their Byzantine (Greek..) past, in general they have a very strong culture of history and a sense of duty to show it. It was beautiful! Loved every minute of it.

What a fantastic journey through time and space and cultures in just 15 minutes! I really appreciate you cover both classic and modern art, and especially how the former have influenced the latter. I must make sure to visit the museum of modern art when I'm next in Istanbul. And the tile museum especially!
