In this episode we look at three less well known works by Michelangelo, including a Pieta he made for his own tomb, a controversial naked Jesus Christ created when he was just a teenager, and a Bacchus rejected by the man who commissioned it for being too raunchy. All three are in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, and a city which houses one third of the world's most important works of art.
Michelangelo went to study in Florence at the age of 13, so he is inextricably linked to the city. Perhaps no more so than with his statue of David - the very embodiment of Florence and everything it stood for.
He wasn’t the only genius in town. Even before he was born, Dante Alighieri had written his Divine Comedy and established the Italian language, Filippo Brunelleschi had completed his impossible dome for the Cathedral and kick started the Renaissance, and Lorenzo Ghiberti gave us the gates of paradise. No other place can rival Florence for the sheer quantity of master works, many of them still in the exact same sites for which they were created.

These videos are as good, if not better, than an art history college class because it makes these important works interesting to learn about and makes a form that was seen as 'out of reach' more accessible to common folk like me, that's what an educational medium should do. It astonishes me every time I look back at the length of these videos and realize they're only about 15 minutes each, this felt like an hour-long deep dive into michelangelo. The depth of knowledge brought forth in only a quarter of an hour is astonishing.
I am an international student in Florence. With this video, I can see how much I have been able to learn after seeing these very sculptures in person.
This channel has been absolutely amazing to me and has inspired me to study in such a wonderful city.

@@GreatArtExplained I'm honestly not too surprised since I had only learned about his work while living in Indonesia. If it's any jumping off point, I think the work he created in his later years when he began squeezing the tube onto the canvas and using his hands is his best period. His family runs a museum dedicated to his work if you're ever in Yogyakarta.
I've been watching these videos since the beginning of the channel and it's really so fulfilling being able to see it getting better and better each day, and with so many people following the channel and watching the videos.

Thank you for creating this video. I saw the nude crucified Christ when I was in Firenze in 1999 or 2003, I can't recall anymore. It was shown at a special exhibition of the early Michelangelos' works and it has left been forever etched into my mind since I saw it. Really a beautiful work of sacred art. I hope to see it again whenever I get a chance to visit Firenze.
1:19 many years ago I watched a documentary on the construction of this Brunelleschi dome and it was absolutely fascinating and brilliant. Since then I've viewed it as one of the greatest architectural works of the Renaissance era, the techniques used to build it in that particular shape are unlike anything I had heard of and I highly recommend looking into it for anyone interested

Firenze is my favorite city in all of Europe. I was there in 1974. The Galleria Academica was closed to the public. The David was being cleaned and restored to its original glory to celebrate the 500th anniversary of its creation. I'm going back in the not so distant future.

I really love your videos, and this one is no different. You can really see how much work you put into these. I actually took a lecture on the Bacchus last semester. The ideas that Riario rejected the Bacchus or that Michelangelo intentionally wanted to sell the Cupid as an antique are a bit of a myth unfortunately. Sources suggest that Michelangelo actually tried to buy the Cupid back and make it known that it was a work by him. The idea that Riario rejected the Bacchus stems from the biography by Condivi. Michelangelo worked with Condivi on the text and aimed to conceal his involvement with Riario after he fell out of favour.
