In 1937, the Nazis held an exhibition of 650 modern artworks that they had stolen from museums and private collectors. It was part of the Nazi’s culture wars, designed to inflame the public and it was called “The Degenerate Art Exhibition.”
Artists considered degenerate by the Nazis included Paul Klee, Otto Dix, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Piet Mondrian, and Egon Schiele.
But surprisingly one artist was missing… Gustav Klimt, who at one time or another had been described as morally questionable, obscene or even pornographic, and was friends with Jewish patrons, intellectuals and artists. So why did the Nazis leave him out of their modern art purge?

wait, didn't i watch this already...
Would love for you to do a take on Isaac Grunewald and Sigrid Hjertén! Really enjoy your videos!
Did you see the recent news about the "lost for over a century" Klimt work entitled "Portrait of Fräuline Lieser"?
Ironic that Klimt's use of nudity is still controversial and censored today
Isn’t it?
It's like rain on your wedding day. Yeah, I really do think.
The debate over nudity vs pornography; conform vs sincere; & apropriation vs radicalism were, is, & will always be like that. At least we talk more about the guy.
He fetishized women's body and had a patriarchal mind. He might be a good painter but he was and still is controversial.
i blame the christians
I really appreciate that creators like James are democratising art history and our learning about it - thank you for making this beautiful art more accessible to us all 😃
Really hoping this one doesn't get censored...thanks for the upload, James!
This is the recut version. Thanks
@@GreatArtExplained Oops, I am dumb! Thank you for the reupload
@@GreatArtExplainedwell done edit but too bad you had to do it.
Dik
To please many is dangerous! Our art is now being censored by an algorithm designed to sell ads to the masses. Their objections to the original cut of this video are ridiculous, and the irony with this video in particular is devastating.
Censorship of great art and your informative videos is idiotic. Never change, your video style and structure aids in widening my perspective and interpretations of all art and artists!!
How fascinating it is that the provocative nature of Klimt's work was apparent then, and still persists today in the very videos that discuss it.
I live in PA and have been to Vienna 15 times to visit works by Klimt, plus his grave, his last studio, and a castle in Romania where he painted huge realistic full-length portraits going down a grand staircase early in his career. His muse was Emilie Fluge, a couture fashion designer, and I always visit her atelier, and sometimes attersee, the lake in central Austria where Klimt spent summers with Emilie, relaxing, boating, ang painting trees and water. I enjoyed your video and downloaded it. You’ve given me a new angle to study.
That’s such a compliment thanks 🙏
RUclips censoring this video only helps to further prove the point
Thank goodness RUclips has saved us from the sheer horror of unexpurgated classic art!
Seriously, though, at least the re-upload has given me a prompt to rewatch one of my favourites of your videos. Just as enjoyable the second time round!
Well said!
Why did you have to repupload this video?@@GreatArtExplained
@@2failepic because it showed female genitalia (albeit in a 150 year old painting).
@@GreatArtExplained I was also about to ask this, as if guessing the answer in my mind... What sinister times we are going through!
How is it possible to censor an excellent Art History class like this, the best approach to Klimt I've ever seen, when they allow swarms of disinformation channels to proliferate and promote alienating content from mediocre influencers?
Somewhat ironic that youtube was not a fan of the original video.
Isn’t it?
I was not familiar with Gustav Klimt until I saw some of his paintings in exhibition, and then he became one of my favorite artists. Thank you for this video. As a side note, it's always heart-breaking to hear/see what the Nazis did with countless works they stole. The scene of the soldiers setting fire to all the canvasses is just disturbing.
I have had the pleasure of admiring Gustav Klimt's paintings up close on several trips to the wonderful city of Vienna and consider myself a big fan of his work...Thank you for this excellent summing up of who he was artistically, regardless of how he has been perceived by various groups or individuals throughout his own life and thereafter...
Thanks for the comment! 🙏
@@GreatArtExplainedIt's my pleasure, as I happen to be a great admirer of your work and your channel, as well...Do keep up the good work!...
Vienna is indeed very heavily centered around Mozart, Klimt, and Schiele, as well as the famous Staatsoper. It's refreshing. The buskers sing opera and play classical music. The opera is the main social activity. Art is also at the heart of the city, especially Klimt.
@@joellahrman4557 My favourite city in Europe...for all the things you mention and a thousand more...✌️👍👍👍
@@alexanderkarayannis6425 I cannot claim to be someone who loves or understands art (I subscribe to this channel because the explanations help increase my meager appreciation of art), but Vienna is worthwhile for everyone to visit. It is impressive to see a modern city so truly grounded in classical music and art.
One of the best Klimt analysis I have ever seen, specially for the dynamism of presentation, and this are hard topics.
It’s important to support such high quality channels when they are attacked by censorship.
Already looking forward to the next video!
Thank you 🙏
I sincerely hope RUclips sees how thoughtful, inspiring, AND edifying this channel is instead of obsessing and overreacting to minutia. These videos are a public service IMHO, and are well worth multiple viewings! Just like the arts they celebrate!
These videos make my day 101% better! I feel like I'm adding another dimension to my knowledge of the world, as if I'm seeing it form an different perspective: an artist's one. I'm very grateful for knowing your channel. Thanks so much for this!
You're so welcome!
15:42 somewhat ironic to censor that painting.
Beauty..is above the political manipulation or propaganda. I am so happy that Klimt genius was saved and cherished by serendipity. Your work, too, should be above the scrutiny of censorship because it is beautiful and valuable to humanity. Thank you as always.
Glad I could rewatch this one, censored as it is, as its one of my favorites of yours. The nazi's degenerate art show is one of my favorite stories from art history since it has so much relevance to today. I want to say that THIS video out of all of them would get censored is ironic, but i think we both just know its more a case of history repeating, or getting close to it.
This is one of my favourite videos you have made so far. I'm so sorry you had to upload it again. This is my fifth time watching it and I would do it as many times as needed! This is honestly the best channel RUclips has
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching again!
thanks for re-uploading this, James!
Thanks for watching 🙏
@@GreatArtExplained just keep ‘em coming!
I attended the Secession gallery when I was in Vienna because of this video ❤
An attack on culture by RUclips. I'm here for the rewatch. Thanks for everything, amazing channel. Keep going💪🏻
Straight to the point, accurate and never banal. Great work as always!
Thanks so much 🙏
Thank you for reposting this after editing out pubic-area nudity that should not have resulted in RUclips taking down the original. I will share this far and wide to show appreciation for your time and energy spent on this endeavor.
Rewatching this video to support your channel!
Thanks 🙏
Liking and commenting for the algorithm. Thank for you work!
Much appreciated!
Glad to help with a re-watch to support your great work! I enjoyed it as much as the first time.
Thank you 🙏
God RUclips really hates culture huh 🤡 thank you for all you do fr this must be a nightmare to deal with. This one of of my favorite videos from you
Imagine that this video gets age restricted because some employee misread Klimt.
Nothing would surprise me 😂
Thank you for making such engaging and well-produced videos on art history. The videos themselves are works of art.
Wow, thank you!
Rewatching & re-liking. Kudos, James 😎
Thanks so much 🙏
@@GreatArtExplained Keep the fire burning! 🔥 Well wishes from Manila! 😊
Rewatched for numbers, but still enjoyed it the second time :)
Thank so much! 🙏
James, your are an excellent arts educator of the highest caliber. I trust your presentations to always promote and promulgate arts information - significantly without any hint of cheesy hidden agenda or false ego puffery. I will ALWAYS watch your videos many many times over. Keep it coming. ❤️🔥🎨❤️🔥
So kind - thank you 🙏
Let's do this...again! 😊
Ha! Here we go... again.
Do what again? Open special exhibitions to show degenerate art? 😂
I love this video so much. Let’s hope it’s doesn’t get taken down again
Happy to rewatch one of my favorite videos of yours, and to leave a comment while I'm at it.
I found your channel because RUclips suggested the first version of this video to me. I’m a subscriber now.
I can't quite put into words what watching your videos does to my mind, but it offers me such glorious escape from reality and transports me to a world of beauty, creativity and imagination. Thank you, it's always a treat.
Loved your first upload. Here to give this its views ❤
Thank you so much!
Here on the rewatch 👍🏼
I enjoyed re-watching this video. It is always such a pleasure to see more of Klimt's work. So sorry to know You Tube has such a limited appreciation of art, to demand a re-editing. Thanks for your persistence, James!
Such a fascinating topic! I didn’t get a chance to watch the uncensored video, but I’m so glad you re-uploaded.
Clicking liking commenting, come on, gotta trigger that algorithm. I've already watched the video and it was so interesting. I hope you are not discouraged
I was at first but followers of this channel are so supportive that I’m just moving on - thanks 🙏
Rewatching this because RUclips is going a little bonkers with the censorship... but also because your work is great.
Thank you very much! Klimt has fascinated me since I was a child.
I usually don't comment on videos, but it seems to help creators, no matter what the comment is. So to try and boost this re-upload, here's a rewatch, comment and a thumbs up.
Each video of yours inspires awe and joy in me. Thank you for deepening my love of art!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Your videos are worth watching over and over again. 👏
Ok, let's all help with another view!
Thanks 🙏
Hopefully the recut stays up - its a great video!!
I hope so too!
Watching to get the views back up to what they should be before the censoring. Thanks for the great work and content!
Much appreciated
One of my favorite artists, I have no problem watching this again!
Thank you 🙏
Great work as usual! Thanks a lot from Russia, Moscow! ❤❤❤💝❤
If only we could put several « likes » ! Thank you for the quality of your content :)
So nice of you
Your work is fantastic. Can’t thank you enough all I have learnt from your videos, I truly appreciate it.
I had watched this when it first came out and decided to watch again knowing it had been flagged. This was just as good the second time
Thanks for rewatching and commenting!
I'm doing my part
Just a good the second time through! I love this channel so much!
RUclips is legitimately full of crap✨
im gonna rewatch this 10 more times😤
Thanks 🙏
Glad you reposted this! Hopefully these annoying censorship’s don’t happen again. Great work as always
I hope so too
👏 bravo 👏 bravo 👏
Thank you James and Joanne
I very much apricate the way the ad read was done, it wasn't intrusive to the content and was after the presentation, despite being a proud adblocker i sat and watched without hating it or skipping)
I appreciate that comment - I get far fewer offers of sponsorship because I insist on the ad being after the video. It will stay that way. Thanks 🙏
Excellent work. Thank you for sharing (again).
My pleasure!
i cannot believe YT would censor your videos with all the other garbage that's on here. a shame
Thank you so much for an excellent presentation. (I'm sorry the original version was censored by RUclips, proving that we haven't come as far in the understanding of art as we might wish.)
Thanks again!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you James. We all appreciate your culture, the quality of your commentaries and the patience to gather all in such extraordinary video.
Thank you RUclips for your continuing efforts against, "degenerate art."
Thank you for this wonderful video! Even as a Viennese I did not know all the details - very helpful and importand video!
Great video!!!!! Always awesome to watch James talk about art
Doing my part to show my appreciation and support for GAE
Nobody that I've yet found on RUclips holds a candle to this channel on Art History. Consistently amazing. Thank you.
Admittedly, I've never been very interested in art however, watching these videos has given rise to a curiosity in me to learn more and to seek out museums and galleries when I can. Thank you for the work you do.
James, you are so precious for people who enjoy and are trying to learn about art.
I can't say thank you enough.
I wish all the best things would happen to you.❤❤❤
Thanks for this.
Top tier content.
Loved the "fig leaf" you used. It made me laugh.
Thank you, James.
Bravo James and Joanne! I first saw Klint back in the 1980s at the MOMA in NYC. Despite being completely ignorant in Art terms I was immediately caught by the Sessecion Movement.
Thank you for this. Klimt really could draw the human body, i find his works absolutely beautiful.
Thank you so much for such amazing art films this one of my favourites
The best video you have put out, on a very important topic. I'm glad you listened to the suggestion to do Klimt's University works.
Using this for my TOK essay, very informative , brief and straightforward
I have no words...except Magnificent!
tyvm for another upload.
as always, well worth the wait.
Really excellent video, as always, thank you!
Keep the Great work up James!
Here to request Käthe Kollwitz. Your videos are beautifully informative and generally unmatched on art history RUclips.
The quality of your videos is unquestionable. What I would like to add is, that you have perfect voice for narration as well. I would love to listen to an audiobook about art or an artist narrated by you. :)
Great video! Quite moving towards the end.
These videos are works of art. In the US, we do not do enough art education outside of university. There is an underappreciation for art in our culture and education like this is sorely needed, especially when it is contextualized with retrograde gov'ts and history.
I’ll watch this again no worries…will also share with even more people. What an idiotic move by RUclips…❤you work!
Thanks 🙏
Great video. I am off to Vienna next month and hope to see many of these paintings in person. It will be awesome with the background that James has so interestingly presented.
This was so outstandingly informative and brilliantly done. Thank you
This is the kind of story that people should know about when they hear recent proposals by the far right to censor art or selectively promote a small range of art that fits their limited vision of our culture.
Surely its the actions of left wing extremists with their distortion of history, rewriting of children's literature, the removal of historical statues and their 'cancel culture' that is the real threat to our society.
Another well executed video essay. Thank you GAE.
WOOOW, James your videos just turn the world upside down for me all the time. You help drastically to understand art deeper
Rewatching, this is a gorgeous video, so informative! Sorry you had to upload again to meet these absurd censorship standards
It wasn't just uploading again either. James had to spend hours recutting and then redoing the subtitles. It's maddening and ridiculous. thanks for watching again!
I watched the first cut. It was not offensive in any way.
Gorgeous colors in Klimt's works, such beautifully flowing lines! It's tragic that so many pieces were lost in Vienna and much of Europe during WWII, such a treasure trove of pieces we'll never get back. Thank you for the video, James, beautifully eloquent as always, and pointgnant in a world where we see missinformation and appropriation as a means to garnering support for violent ignorance and totalitarian tendencies.
