Metallica pulled off a trick no one else could - They brought hardcore metal to the masses with this video/song. They did it by lulling the audience into the video with "safe" melodic music coupled with an interesting story and (like the frog in a pot of slowly heating water) kept them captivated as the pace and intensity slowly built into the type of song that turned everyone's head when they first released "Master of Puppets"

Tell ya what the meaning of the song changed drastically over a 10 year period of my life. Got introduced to it just a couple of years before joining the Army. Meant one thing, serving peace time meant something else, and then the towers were hit... Changed once again.

I served, but never experienced any fighting. Basic training breaks down the individual to create a cohesive unit, and it works marvelously. But when you get out, there's no training to become an individual again. It's hard to reintegrate. I've lost a few friends after discharge.

YUP... This may sound weak, but I was "forced" to watch the Movie "Jonny Got His Gun" in 1986 in English class (I was only 16 y/o). I asked to leave about 3/4 the way through.... I couldn't take it.... I was told it was a required part of the class. At one point, I got so overwhelmed that I literally passed out. Slid right out of my chair and onto the floor!!(embarrassing as hell!!) Needless to say, it was no longer a "requirement" after that!!!. Love this song but, the 1st time I saw this video I flashed right back to that day in English class.... Still gets to me.

You should do Four Horsemen and then look into Metallica’s history with their original guitar player Dave Mustain. After they kicked him out he started his own band called Megadeth which had been Metallica’s rival for many years. In fact The riff of Four Horsemen was Written by Dave Mustain and he went and recorded his own version with Megadeth called the mechanix. Would love to see a side-by-side reaction comparison from you. Then when everybody tells you that you should do more Megadeth the first song you should for sure do is called Holy Wars… Punishment due.

Love Metallica, great song and message. Your so right, you can't judge the band and music. There are so many great metal bands with meaningful messages and playing those instruments are not easy specially live. Thank you for giving all genres of music a chance to shine, your reaction is very genuine and you actually pay attention to what it's all about. Pretty much he lost all his body parts, and he can't even see or speak but still living, thats heartbreaking. The things these guys go through to protect us. Great reaction thank you.

A simple yet absolutely heartbreaking story. A young man goes to war only to be stripped of his sight, hearing, speech, and the use of his limbs. His body is broken beyond repair but his mind lives on trapped within the empty void within himself. Time goes by as the agony of a fate worse than death grows in him and he begs for someone to just end his misery and let him finally be at peace.

*Be sure to pull up the lyrics with each one. Metal is a form of lyrical art that is best appreciated when you analyze and understand the meaning of each song. IMO it’s best to start with studio versions, as some live versions are messed with by the bands and if you aren’t familiar with the song or it’s meaning, it can loose some of its ability to convey its true meaning/definition of the song when it’s done more casually in a live setting. Just a thought.. Best of luck in your metal journey!

Those in the military get conditioned which helps to separate you from normal society. For a lot it is hard to integrate back into society. I mean all these people in the States complain about how bad things are but they have no idea. Slaves from back in the day had it better then what 70 or 80 percent then the world today. Knowing the issues the rest of the world has, the hardships it makes it hard to relate to society here. Not to mention being conditioned to kill makes it hard to want to be around others. Where before conditioning if confronted maybe a small fight but afterwards each strike has been honed to be devastating. If I was to lose control during a confrontation the other person would not be walking away let alone waking up. So we isolate ourselves from society. For example being homeless few ever bothers you, there is a freedom in that.

You have two choices in life. Live free (however you define that) or live under tyranny. "Democracy" is supposed to mean that everybody has a voice in what happens. Many people, if not most, are willing to fight for that at some point. Unfortunately, that's not usually what our politicans actually have us fighting for.
Those clips look like this was world war 1. Terrible war, but people really were fighting over whether or not they were going to be free or made into slaves.
