It's ironic that many systems closed in the late 1960s or early 1970s, the last in 1972 just in time for the oil crisis of 1974 when the cost of diesel shot up. If this had happened 10 years earlier some systems may have survived to be modernised.

Years ago UK fans said that abandonment was because the electricity price went up. Diesel were cheaper to run. Not now, I suspect.
