Thank you Donnie again for taking the time and effort to make episodes like this one. You don't know how much it is appreciated by people like me and your regular audience. It's good not to forget how free and hard-working people of this country once lived. I hope youth of today have the opportunity to watch your videos and learn. Unfortunately, very few know our history.

This made my heart ache for the good old days of my youth. My grandmother thought nothing of packing a picnic lunch and rounding up all the kinfolk for a trip to Maggie Valley. We never thought things would change cause we still lived old timey. Then the world found Sevier County, and everything sure is different now. So hard to go home and see all the changes. Glad you show everyone the lives of real mountain people. I can show this to my grandkids to show them how it used to be. Thanks for the memories.

Love ❤️ the phrase "old timey," haven't heard that in decades but previous gens of my family used to say that. TY for that memory this morning, as I wipe a tear or two. That's what's important about communicating, comraderie & being together as human is recognizing what's important & enjoying the good in life-together. It's hard enough with it, and life is not much without it. I think we are all reading through these posts coming in from the far corners, ppl leading all different sorts of lives but Mr.Laws has brought us here together in recognition of these old times, better times as he has a gift for doing.

I was born in a little coal town in southeastern Ky. I was raised north of Cincinnati Oh. It always seemed to me that my father and I were somehow reaching back to the mountains. We raised rabbits for meat. Hunted wild meat for food. And went back down home every chance we got. That’s always been home to me. I live out in the foothills of the appellations now where I raised my kids and grandkids and starting on the great grandchildren. I’ve always felt a sort of conviction to my family and giving them the best. That being a chance to know how to be self reliant.

I remember growing up our family had reunions. Now my dad was one of thirteen so they were big and fun times. What’s sad is when a family member passed away the reunions were less and less. Now we don’t have any. It’s so important to keep traditions going to pass onto the younger generations. Thanks for the memories. 😊🙏🏼❤️

This is what is going on with my family, as well. Lost all Grandparents & parents on both sides, now we are the eldest generation, in our mid-50's, for our kids and grandchilds we are it. Unfortunately, no extended family. I feel like the immigrants that had come over long ago from different countries, left their extended family, starting over and holding a few long held traditions still once arriving here. Hoping the world lasts into the future & our family once again swells to more large in future,..meantime we are a small circle ❤

Your stories sure bring back memories, Donnie, although I'm a south Georgia girl. Hunting, fishing, sewing, the church, the community, were all so important to us. My husband is a Florida boy, and he tells me how it hurts his heart to see how Florida has changed, so many small towns have been swallowed up by cities...it is so sad how our world has changed. God bless you, I hope you have a wonderful weekend.🙏❤️

2nd comment, my daddy was a fine bluegrass player, played banjo, fiddle and guitar. He played all by ear self taught. He picked tmatoes to buy his first guitar and his sisters learned to play that same guitar. And i still have that guitar and his fiddles and his pride and joy. His White Eagle banjo. He was born in 1934. In the great depression. Hard times.❤

My grandma made the BEST breakfasts that I have ever eaten. I've never had anything as good since she passed on. She'd make the best biscuits and gravy that you ever ate! Biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, black berry jam, fritters, hocakes, pancakes, etc. We had fresh eggs from the hen house too, and boy was that amazing! The best fried eggs, scrambled eggs, omelets, and boiled eggs/deviled eggs! We had some of the best salted ham that I've ever eaten! And let me tell you, nobody today living can make cornbread like mamma made! When I was a kid, I'd eat cornbread in milk as a cereal, crumble cornbread and butter together for a treat, and she'd fry up some apples with cinnamon and sugar for the greatest treat of all! Pork chops and applesauce, fried potatoes, green beans, fresh corn, etc. Man, o' man!
I never tasted a store-bought cake until I was 12 or 13! Grandma or Mom always made cakes and pies at home!

Those folks didn't need our pity nor did they want it.They were talented enough to eek out a living and provide for their families. They sung songs had quilting bees, danced played musical instruments, cooked, lived and breathed their customs.Best of all Donnie they communicated with each other. We could use more of that with today's youth living in a battery operated world and looking at a phone all day long instead of being out in nature.Hope you have a good weekend ❤

Mr. Huffman, who was an old coal miner from Pikeville, Kentucky, used to tell me about a game they played back home called, "Are you pleased, or displeased?". I used to love sitting out on the front porch with him during the summer in the cool of the evening and listening to him telling stories about his life, and the things he had learned from it. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to know he and his wife, and to live with them for several years. Because of that I was able to experience some of that lifestyle for myself, even in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia. I really miss those days.

When I was kid in Leslie Co, Ky every fall there was a stir-off to make sorghum syrup from the harvest of sugar cane. All the farmers in the area would bring their cane to the cane mill. The cane juice was then put into a large boiling pan where the cane juice was boiled until the juice thickened and the sorghum would rise to the top and all us kids would use a piece of cane to dip it out and eat it. Good Memories

Brother Laws , you've done it again , you done went and took me back to my childhood. My Uncle's , Aunt's , cousins and Grandparents and on down the line. Well we all worked hard either on the farms or public jobs. Even if you had an outside job you worked the farm when you had the time. In school no problem get the eggs gathered or milk cows/goats by lantern light EARLY in the morning.
We knew how to have fun too , nearly all of us made music and when we all gathered up ; large times were had. I ain't gonna deny that some of my kin folks didn't make a little white mule , mule kick whatever you want to call white liquor. Wasn't any of those big 500 gallon black pot stills and propane fires. You could at times see what looked like giant lightning bugs on some of the hills. Shoot wasn't nothing copper pot still fires. One Uncle used to shake his head and say "if you can see their fires then they don't know what they're doing" ☠️ Running the dogs gettin a good race going with fox , raccoon to the wee hours. Yes Sir we had some bad times but the good times out weighed em by far.
God Bless you and yours and let's all pray for our Great Nation 🙏

Our grandparents have all passed, but a fond memory of my husband & I was our grandparents bringing out the ice cream churn at get togethers; going way back, the kids took turns cranking, then later on, electric models. That's probably when things took a turn for the worse in society 😂 because you enjoyed more the hand cranked. Heard before that some families did the coffee can of ice & rock salt method, too.

Thank you Donnie. I would love to share a cuppa coffee or a ball jar of shine with you. Hunting with my Grandad and uncles... I am 70 and my bed has a quilt made by the women of my family some while back. Church Socials...the potato salad the cobblers, dang I miss that. I would eat myself sick and love every minute. As to music.... I learned a few on guitar, banjo mandolin or dulcimer. Wish I still could. I am 70 and my fingers no longer work. Donnie we are all family. we knw the hardship, but we know the joy. Thank you for reminding me of my roots.

I remember when I was first married, my husband took me to Cave City Ky to meet his grandparents. We went to a country store and the store keeper cut us a big slice of Bologna and slice of cheese and made us a sandwich. For our treat we had an RC cola and chocolate moon pie. It sure tasted good!!

Good morning Donnie! Oh do I love these videos! I wasn’t raised in the mountains, but was raised on the farm. I was too young to learn to shoot and hunt. But I love to hear that mountain music! You’re right….. a lot of good pickers there! And I remember watching a video of a man videoing a cemetery especially for nothing but prize coin dogs & champions! It was a site to see! Those men sure loved those dogs almost more than their families! My heart is always with the woods and the mountains no matter where I live. Blessings always! ❤️✝️

Picking blackberries. 5cent comic books...25cent Saturday movies...going to visit family on Sunday for a Sunday dinner....I was so so rich....I grew up never moving from my roots. And I'm 71 now and I am still so so rich. Not with things....you know what I mean. God bless dear Donnie

Thank you for sharing this Mr Donnie ❤ I feel sorry for the people that have lived in cities all their lives. There is something so comforting about the country. I've lived in the big city before. Everything is convenient, but it's definitely not peaceful. I definitely feel closer to God here in rural PA. What a beautiful video you've brought us today Donnie! Everybody has to relax and enjoy the fact that we're alive and have family and friends every once in a while! The creek, the horses, the local store, and church socials are all fond memories for me. You've even touched on the one thing that made me admire my mountain foothills neighbors more than anything else as a child: the idea that even work could be turned into something fun! Quilting and building are much easier when you can laugh with your friends and family while doing it! Thank you for doing these videos! They will be a treasure for generations to come one day, just as we treasure our memories now! Take care please! May God bless you and yours.

I'm sure the rest of my day will be spent listening to these great memories of how us folks lived in the past and how hard life was yet so enjoyable! in the past 2 years I've lost my mom, my daughter and 10 months ago my wife of 45 years left me so believe me when I tell you your videos are a blessing to find! the youtube algorithm FINALLY did something I agree with! lol God bless you brother! keep on keeping on!

My daddy's people were Southern from 1799 at least, in Virginia, and before the war lived in western North Carolina; after the war they moved to eastern Kentucky. Later they moved to Arkansas, then Texas, then Oklahoma, and then my parents moved to California, where I was born. But I'm an adopted Texan, and my attitudes and speech are Southern.
I don't know it, but I suspect my daddy's people drank corn likker, and for all I know they made some too. In those days you might not see but a few dollars cash money in the whole year, and turning extra corn into whisky was just survival.
Another way Southerners entertained themselves was sacred harp singing. At one time just about every Southern family had two books if they didn't have any others - the Bible and the *Sacred Harp* . It's beautiful music, and it's still going. It's even in some foreign countries now.
Thanks for the video. My heart's Southern, and when I watch one of your videos and listen to your voice it's like a piece of home.

I just love your channel Mr. Laws. I love the old photos you show and even more, the history and stories you tell. They are so facinating. I love to hear how people lived and what they did for entertainment, etc. you are the best speaker. I may not be from the Appalachian but I love the mountains and the people and the history as if I did. I used to talk to my Grandmom a lot when I was in my 20’s but never wrote anything down. It’s almost like you believe they will never get old and you will always have them to talk to and one day you don’t. So sad😢. When I was little my Grandmom taught me a child’s bedtime prayer in German. I honestly don’t know if I was 5 or six. But now thinking back. I wish I would have asked my mother or father to write it down. But when you are little, you just do not think this way. Thank you again. I want to say, May your Christmas be Blessed with the gift of love and light of our dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.❤. Karen
