I remember seeing it live, it was quite amusing, but having worked in broadcasting in the past I know the stress that several people would have been feeling at the time.
Apparently I'm BBC1 they just had a information card up about the error, but on the News Channel they kept seeing Huw just sitting there.
10:21 was an example of quite poor timing and a coincidence clashing. As they were about to make a joke about Michael Jackson, news of his passing went public. Channel 4 saw the news, and cut the footage to prevent the now distasteful joke, and also pretended it was a general power failure.
I'm confused, where did MJ come into pretending to have got a bear skin? Or do I need to have seen the previous half hour?

I can add context. IIRC, there was a joke about Michael hiring lookalikes to fill in for him to relieve some of the workload. Shortly after they would reveal that they have an exclusive interview with real MJ. 'Michael' would then walk on and speak in an Essex accent
I've worked in local broadcasting and when there's a hardware problem like a transmitter going down and you need to bring the backup online, you'd be amazed at how quickly the second hand sweeps around the clock face. OTOH, when you get something like a power failure at the studio and there's nothing to do besides calling the boss and answering the 100 phone calls with people asking "Did you know you're off the air?" five minutes seems like an hour.

Yeah I’m an EVS Operator in broadcast and can be transmitter or if it’s from an OB Truck it’s usually the Matrix computer crashing or generator failure.
Channel 4 TNT Cut off: Channel 4 feigns a power failure during the broadcast of an episode of TNT, starring Jack Whitehall and Holly Walsh, after a joke is made at the expense of Michael Jackson. At the time of broadcast, reports of Jackson's death were beginning to come through, so there had been no time to re-scrutinize any of the programming. Due to the time delay employed by many broadcasters, Channel 4 were able to, perhaps quite literally, pull the plug before the now-tasteless joke went public.

If memory serves me right at 10:24 the program was pulled deliberately as there was a Michael Jackson joke and it was being broadcast as his death was being announced.

Yes Micheal Jackson news was breaking that he was in hospital before his death was announced so there was I’m sure a sketch that was about MJ near the end so on the Channel 4 +1 broadcast they cut it out and just apologised like it was a breakdown

The narration & the music when there are technical problems in the UK remembers me from a call being on hold in Spain
Once when I was a kid, the credits on the broadcast I was watching started playing in fast motion. They would usually mute the video and split screen it with some ads or bumpers, but one time they didn't mute it... Scared the hell out of me, it did.

I witnessed one of these. In 2022 when I was watching I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! STV glitched and it wouldn't air for a bit. After about 10 mins, it came back on. Didn't even say like We're sorry for the fault, here's some music. It just left us with the STV logo.

Broadcasting something in the wrong aspect ratio, even with the reliance on plus 1 channels and overnight service with little or no staff (or relying on pre-recorded announcements) is a problem faced more and more these days; I'd think. Replacing or fixing it on the plus 1's (or filling in the 'lost' time, be that adverts or programming) could have solved some of these issues. The biggest problem and surely the most embarrassing fault included here had to be the BBC News 2017 with Huw being totally unaware of the situation for so long like that! Just as well he wasn't saying or doing anything unprofessional isn't it? LOL.
But what was the BBC going to do in 2000 when their generator fucked up? Say oh we will put you onto our competitor itv1
In 2017 BBC 1 was not showing Huw & he was aware of the problem but I guess he assumed that BBC News was like BBC 1 and had the usual caption up
Also do you notice he writes something on the paper, well there's a camera above his head, out of sight so he would be communicating with the gallery with his writing
@@1701Wren huw looks directly at the cameras not long after they're active, so something tells me he sees them go hot, but hasn't been told to be ready to go live, which is why he doesnt say anything. chances are, his writing was communication like you say, and he was probably getting communication in his ear or in the desk-mounted computer.

The 2009 TNT fault was of course fake. Michael Jackson had died before that episode aired and contained a tasteless joke about him that of course Channel 4 found offensive so they cut it.
What was the joke?
it was about him dying prior to him actually dying
now making jokes based off of dead people is morally and ethically questionable so they had to shutdown the current brodcast

odd bit of curiosity: i am curious to see how Engis and the Techies at the broadcast locations manage to deal with situations like this along with workarounds. credit given where it's due i'm sure there are procedures in place to rectify these errors as contingencies but the pressure must be immense.
As someone who's fixed (and caused) a few. There's not really any procedures to fix such issues - it's just a case of just trying to work out what the problem is and how to fix it/work round it. There can't really be any procedures for the fix as every breakdown is different - however those in channel playout who have to cover fault with slides, announcements and standby programmes will have some, but again it's always different
At 19:24 it only hears on one side, specifically on the left side
there was a technical fault in 2013 from Channel 4 that said running around like headless chickens

basically, the screen was just black and nothing was showing for at least half an hour until it cut to a fault screen with a satellite on it
And now it doesnt even let us watch it over satellite
Breakdowns used to get on my nevers so I had to find something else to do to fill up my time until the programme came back on however if the news failed to make it to air the I read a newspaper as a backup

10:20 is an interesting case of Lost Media. This part would portray some jokes and/or irony about Michael Jackson, but the issue is that there were already rumours that he was dead, therefore, they have cut down the video emission to possibly honour him. As far as I know the issue is that the TNT Show episode was recorded a few days before his death, so that's what the best Channel 4 could possibly do at that moment.
At the start the caption reads 'link to Part Two is in the description below', though this IS Part 2, whoops. :D

the show was being routed through the bt tower to the video desk before being transmitted to viewers. the bt tower ended the scheduled slot an hour earlier than expected due to daylight savings.
