- Yet Do I Marvel
I doubt not God is good, well-meaning, kind,
And did He stoop to quibble could tell why
The little buried mole continues blind,
Why flesh that mirrors Him must some day die,
Make plain the reason tortured Tantalus
Is baited by the fickle fruit, declare
If merely brute caprice dooms Sisyphus
To struggle up a never-ending stair.
Inscrutable His ways are, and immune
To catechism by a mind too strewn
With petty cares to slightly understand
What awful brain compels His awful hand.
Yet do I marvel at this curious thing:
To make a poet black, and bid him sing!
His adopted dad, Frederick Cullen, founded my church. The Salem UMC in Harlem! His wedding to Yolande Dubois (daughter of WEB) was held there! A pretty big freakin deal!
Now THAT’s an interesting bit of information right there.
@@keithephesusgoodman8695 I saw the guest list with WEB Dubois’s handwritten notes. Guests included Mary McCloud Bethune and Langston Hughes as a groomsmen!❤
This is an amazing Poet! I love this poem. Countee Cullen is my favorite Harlem Renaissance Poet! He went to NYU and Harvard at a time where neither school had diversity and his poetry is lyrical. I am a poet too and a writer. He taught English and French too. I admire him even though he was gay I just like him and find myself wanting to defend him with his critics.
