    • @quickcooper61
      @quickcooper61 4 года назад +84

      Papa torr sounds like one of those guys who just doesn't like rotary engines 🤣
      For non-car people, yea, they are absolutely terrible. I mean who the hell wants to constantly be popping their hood every other trip to the gas station to check and top off the oil? That along with ever increasing emissions requirements is what killed the rotary engine... not because it wasn't a competitive engine. As a go fast smile generator, it works pretty damn well. Also, it turns out that as a legitimately competitive racing engine, the rotary does pretty damn good job at that too.

    • @papatorr3669
      @papatorr3669 4 года назад +26

      @@quickcooper61sounds like one of those guys who just can't accept rotary reality. Had the industry dedicated a tenth of the R&D money into the German/Wankel engine that it dedicated to making piston engines more fuel efficient it might be a commercial option today. Intuitively, an engine that has parts continuously going in the same direction appears to be a superior design to a piston that moves in one direction then in the opposite direction many thousands of times per minute. Many examples of this in the market where the less efficient design won: Original Apple OS vs DOS. PC won, and PE won. (Piston Engine).

    Just a note, I did my aluminum 5.3 Swap with CD009 for right at $13,000 and that was with going way overboard on the fuel system to do E85 and piecing things together. I think you can get close to $10,000 if you were to buy a donor car and part out what you don't need and get everything for the engine in one shot and not have to track down things like transmission bolts and such. But the CD009 is my favorite shifting trans. So it works out pretty well.

I think over 400 hp from the V8 in the small, semi floppy chassis of a Miata is a little too much. All joking aside I bought a pet project my mechanic & machinist buddy built for shits and giggles in his spare time. Lets just say I owned it about 6 months before I sold it back to him lol. SO much fun I just couldn't keep it together. Hes a Geo/Suzuki man, has built a few trackers/samaris (or a mix of the 2 really lol) for rock crawling. Had a 3 cylinder Geo and engine needing rebuilding. He ported and polished the head, intake manifold & even the exhaust manifold. (You can buy peformance Suzuki 1.3 4 cylinder parts, not much for the 3 cylinder tho). Ported the throttle body out as big as possible, so much that he had to weld a piece of an old Alen wrench to hold the injector in the middle. Head and the block were both shaved as much as they could possibly be for compression and the rotating assembly had a total of 7.5 lbs cut off... Thats insane for a 3 cylinder. It was so drastic that when installing a new clutch it wasnt balanced right so I had to go get a spare crank he had cut to match and have the clutch rebalanced to match. Just a nightmare. Yes it made almost 100 hp N/A, and in a 2 door Geo Metro with about 500lbs cut out it was fun as hell to drive. It would rev so fast it would crack the air like a streetbike lmao. Seriously sounded that pissed off and with a 2.5 inch straight exhaust from header back it would pop a flame. Drawback is it was about 1/10 as reliable as my other stock Metros have been tho. You pay a price when you start stretching the rubber band too far lol

    I think K swap is the ideal swap. Still a "stock" motor swap so reliability isn't affected like a turbo setup (more parts, more points of failure). LS looks like a repair nightmare, plus the supporting parts (ie. cooling) adds cost. BP motor is fine, but it's sinking money into a black hole; dollar for dollar K swap beats it.

    This is Gary from OZ Engineering. We manufacture a Honda J series V6 swap for the 1990 to 2005 Miatas. The kit uses a early or late model Honda/Acura V6. We believe it provides the best balance between the 4 cylinder and 8 cylinder options out there with a very reasonable cost and retains the Miata gearbox and transmission. A buddy of mine has a turbo miata 1.8L bored out to a 2.1L stroker with a turbo kit on it and he was having serious traction issues as it put down a little over 340hp to the wheels on a 235 width tire. His solution was actually to use custom made spacers on the rear sub-frame to create a larger gap between the inside of the wheel well and hub assembly and was able to put a 285 on the rear, thing hooks and boogies now with R888's on the rear. If you're okay with a bit of front leaning rake the solution just works, the next best thing would be to tub your rear end and put some kind of trick suspension system in the rear but that would be well into the thousands vs. just a couple hundred bucks of some spacers.

    The best engine swap that would fit the Miata's character in my opinion would be a 9AGE. It's a Frankenstein of an engine using a 7AFE block, 4AGE head (preferably the 20v Blacktop), 1ZZ crank, 1ZZ, 2ZZ, or 7AFE rods, and a set of custom 83mm pistons. The result is a rev happy, NA 2.0 inline 4 with around 230HP at 8000RPM and 180 ft/lbs at 6000RPM. Pretty damn good for a four banger, and it sounds awesome with ITBs.

    If I were to swap the stock BP on my NB, I would probably do the Jaguar AJ 3.0 V6 out of the S-Type, which is basically a hotter version of the Ford Duratec. The AJ was rated at 240 bhp from the factory, which is less than the 330 bhp from GM LFX, but it arguably makes a much better noise. The AJ also retains the Miata transmission, which should theoretically make the swap less expensive, if only the Rocketeer conversion kit weren't so expensive to ship over from the UK. Based on this video, it seems like the AJ might be a good fit for the Speed Academy Miata.

It is a compact engine so plenty of room to work around. Also it sits further back and lower than all those engines. If money is not an issue a 3 rotor na is a simple engine and would be a blast. Considering the miata is used for roadcourses it could really benefit from an engine that sits lower to the ground and closer to the middle of the car.

It’s cheaper to do in general and it’s extremely reliable. The j swaps can make up to 260whp if you use the type s motor. The kit itself is 3750 which comes with everything you need. The motors themselves are dirt cheap. If you blow up a j motor your looking at 600$ for a replacement and there’s tons of them out there. Great video. Wish you guys would have mentioned that a boosted k series will hold more power on its stock bottom end than you would even get out of a v8 setup.

    if you think a miata 6 speed shifts better than a 5 speed, theres something VERY wrong with your 5 speed!

      Having driven 6 or more 5 speeds and 2 6 speeds the worst 6 speed felt better to me than the best 5 speed. But the internet disagrees with that so i'm not sure what the truth is.

      The Miata 6 speed transmission are normally built stronger then the 5 speed so they’re less likely to break whenever people add turbos and shit so most people who want to heavily mod a Miata use the 6 speeds, I’ve also driven an nb Miata with 6 speed from factory a few times and other then the gears being a bit close it was decent but I also don’t drive manuals too often so whatever.

    the ecotec swaps are best bang for your buck but i feel to do one properly it would need to be one of the 2.0L because they can take boost and and can rev to 8k with mods, they are actually a very well designed motor with the piston oil squirters and built in oil cooler, the 2.0 has a forged bottom end and even the sc motor can make 250whp very easily

    I want to build a smaller displacement ls Miata. Higher revving, potentially itb, baby camshaft, so on. Probably 5.3 aluminum block with 4.8 crank. Probably around 300-320 wheel goal. I think it'd be PERFECT but my driving just is not ready. So I'm going to sit back and keep gaining knowledge till that time comes. Our chassis could already support it, just enjoying it simple for the time being.
