CANTRIP #3: Booming Blade (5E)

  • Опубликовано: 11 сен 2024
  • Level: Cantrip
    Casting Time: 1 Action
    Range/Area: 5 ft
    Components: V, M
    Duration: 1 Round
    School: Evocation
    Attack/Save: Melee
    Damage/Effect: Thunder
Description: As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attack’s normal effects, and it becomes sheathed in booming energy until the start of your next turn. If the target willingly moves before then, it immediately takes 1d8 thunder damage, and the spell ends.
This spell’s damage increases when you reach higher levels. At 5th level, the melee attack deals an extra 1d8 thunder damage to the target, and the damage the target takes for moving increases to 2d8. Both damage rolls increase by 1d8 at 11th level and 17th level.

joshtr 2000 Yea cause Thunder is the sound that lighting sometimes makes and not the actual lightning. I’m surprised not many people know this. One of my friends asked during a session y thunder and lighting r two different damage types so I told him. I mean y do u think Thunderwave and Thunderous smite make a big boom that can be heard from like 300 ft when used u know?

@@ChancesSpellbook yea i'm surprised they don't make a point to have this cantrip alert all within some distance due to sound. Would tone it down when used by arcane trickster trying to be stealthy.

Fusion Actually Thunderbolt is Thunder and lightning at the same time so it works (The definition is: A flash of lightning with a simultaneous crash of thunder). Now thunder on the other hand is stupid. What else do u think they could’ve called it?

One suggestion for booming blade users, combine it with spell sniper for a 10ft range and a reach weapon. Enter YOUR range to attack but not you're enemies; you force them to take the movement damage or forego hitting you back. It also works well with the War Caster feat, effectively giving you the equivalent of the sentinel feat, only with A LOT more damage.

Does this mean the target takes the regular damage it would take from a weapon attack AND thunder damage if I'm level 5 or greater AND more thunder damage if it moves?
Also, would stunning strike be applicable for a monk? For example, I come across a prone enemy. Hit them with a stunning strike booming blade. If they fail the save, they have no choice but to stay prone and the onslaught continues. If they pass and choose to get up... BOOM!

I can see this working with mobile feat or a character that can disengage with a bonus action like monk (ki points) or rogue hit and run, so they'd follow on next turn. Otherwise if you have a DM like mine the fights would be pretty static so the enemies once engaged wouldn't move much if at all.

Combine this with the feat "Telekinetic" to shove the opponent back 5 feet away from you as a bonus action (no attack of opportunity triggered) after you used Booming Blade! They are not moving willingly, so the effect is not triggered, but they also cannot re-enter your space for their own melee attack without getting extra damage. It's a great combination for a warlock, to keep hitting the enemy with Eldritch Blast without the disadvantage from being within 5 feet!
Here's an idea of a combination: genie warlock (with the "genie's wrath" feature, you inflict additional damage based on your patron, either bludgeoning, thunder, fire or cold), make him a variant human to have the telekinetic feat, pick Booming Blade and Hex as spells, take the Pact of the Tome at level 3 and choose Shillelagh as one of your new cantrips.
I assume +3 in Charisma. Put Hex on your target and use your bonus action to cast Shillelagh. Cast Eldritch Blast on the enemy when they are not yet in melee range: +5 to hit, dealing 1d10 force + 2 bludgeoning/thunder/fire/cold + 1d6 necrotic (11 damage average). When they attack in melee, it's even worse: +5 to hit, dealing 1d8+3 bludgeoning +2 bludgeoning/thunder/fire/cold +1d6 necrotic (13 average), then use Telekinetic shoving to push the enemy away 5 feet. If they move back in melee, that's another 1d8 damage (average now at 18!). If they don't move on their turn, you are safe from melee attacks and can cast Eldritch Blast.

This is actually great for rogues. It is probably best for the 'Revived' subclass currently in UA. If you get spell sniper for your subclass necro spell attack and increase its range from 30ft to 60ft and ignore half cover, take BOOMING BLADE as the cantrip you get for the feat. This give this rogue some of the best damage and control on a constant bases. you can more up attack with booming blade and use a cunning action (any cunning action) disengage or dodge to unleash the necro bolts.
A melee attack/cantrip + a safe movement that unleashes sneak attack die worth of necro spell damage. Very sweat.

This cantrip is really strong for any class with only 1 attack, especially those who don't really have resources to spend, aka magic Initiate rogues or high elf half elf lineage with bb. Csuse as a rogue you want sneak attack, this gives it to you, basically quadrupling damage at 5th level and at 11th and 17th level give ridiculous bonuses on top of sneak attack, 5th level 2d8+3d6+2d8(second 2d8 from moving), especially strong on a swashbuckler. Way better then trying dual weapon fighting cause it's 1d6 extra(or second chance at hit) or 3d8 extra at lv5(mitigated by using familiar if you go magic Initiate)

So combine this with a gaint tuning fork or bell and it becomes quite the versatile cantrip. It now becomes an AOE, can individually target multiple and just about anything if resonance is achieved, can signal positions great alarm and and warning systems as well as a nice defense system.

Hmm very interesting idea! Sadly it specifies you have to target 1 creature, because of it I probably wouldn't allow it to be used as AOE. However, I would definitely allow it to be used as a signal or alarm!

    • @andresmarrero8666
      @andresmarrero8666 4 года назад

@@ChancesSpellbook normally yes, but a tuning fork is made to resonate and tune frequencies, in other words sound. As long as resonance can be obtained, multiple can be struck as once with is possible thanks for the tuning fork being a tuning fork, by resonating with the spell itself, it is possible to emit an AOE sonic blast without the need for a creature to hit. This is all due to the fact that the weapon being used is a tuning fork which interacts with interacts with the spell uniquely allowing certain limitations to be bypassed.

Combine it with Polearm mastery and mobile. Go up to an enemy, cast it and smack them with your Polearm (possibly getting your bonus attack with it depending on dm cause Idk how that works by Raw) and then backing away from them without provoking an attack because of mobile and then if they move they take the booming blade damage and then u get a reaction attack against them if they decide to come within range (maybe pick up warcaster too so u can power up said reaction attack with booming blade). I’m currently playing a multiclassed Druid (coast)/Arcane cleric and this is exactly what I’m gonna do with my character (I also picked up Green flame blade for the other Wizard cantrip I can get). My Dm does allow me to get my bonus attack with my quarterstaff even when I cast these spells and also the bonus attack would do a d4 but he said when I have Shillelagh on it would go to a d8 (makes sense). And I always have Shillelagh active. It’s the first thing I cast in battle and the dm is always asks if I’m gonna cast Shillelagh and the answer is always yes (it is my whole characters build and my char only has a 10 str and an 18 wis so hell yea I’m gonna cast it 😂)

    Ok. I got this one.
REDONE BECAUSE I DID MORE RESEARCH!
Make a Variant Human Storm Sorcerer.
For your feat, Grab the Elemental Adept on Thunder Damage, we'll get the other one later.
After you get your 4th level in Sorcerer and get your ability score improvement. Start investing levels into a Tempest Domain Cleric. Take the Tempest Levels to 6, getting your Thundrous Strike and your Channel Divinity Of Destructive Wrath. For your one ability score improvement there, forego it and take the Elemental Adept feat in Lightning
Take your Sorcerer Levels to 14, so you get you Storm's Fury feature, along with Storm Guide and Heart Of The Storm. Lots of Storminess in this build. Try to get your Charisma and Wisdom as high as possible to make those saves difficult.
For some spells I would recommend, of course Booming Blade but also Thunder Step from the Sorcerer list.
For your metamagics? Heightened Spell, Subtle Spell, Careful Spell and Empowered Spell for when you don't have Destructive Wrath.
So here's how this one will work.
You have the ability to make one Thunder or Lightning spell of yours do maximum damage. Along with that. Thanks to Thunder Step, you can bamf over 90 feet and deal 3d10 (or maybe 30 if that's what you use Destructive Wrath on) Thunder Damage with a CON save at disadvantage thanks to your Metamagics. Along with that, since Booming Blade is a Bonus Action Cantrip, you can still use it in the same turn. So go ahead and swing your weapon to do a few additional d8s of Thunder Damage.
If you get hit? No problem, you have multiple ways to punish people for hitting you. Storm's Fury deals 14 Lightning Damage as a reaction and pushes people who fail a strength save 20 feet away from you.
Or you can basically rebuke someone with the Tempest Domain's Wrath Of The Storm. 2d8 of Thunder or Lightning damage on a failed Dex Save.
Plus, you deal additional damage thanks to the Storm Sorcerer's Heart Of The Storm Function. That Thunder Step you started off with? Yeah now that deals 37 Thunder Damage (30 Damage with Destructive Strike+Half Sorcerer Level) for anything within 10 Feet of you.
Clear the way for the Bringer Of The Storm
