Same here, it's the only time a movie has ever made me laugh until the point my eyes were all watery. That and the isolation tank scene, mainly his little British sock puppets.
Have you not scene the other two parts that are tens times funnier?! The part in the silent chamber and the part were the nuns say what is the most important rule about NASA children. safety!! We have a recording of when my 19 year old baby sister was six years old. First time ever to watch this movie. We recorded her at the silent chamber. She laughs so loud and hard!! We all did!!
Best part is this was all improv and wasn't originally in the script. The original script of this movie would have stunk if it wasn't for Harland Williams changing it.
Yeah, I was 17 when it came out and I probably didn't hear about it until 10 years or so later. Don't recall seeing any previews, TV spots or anything. The first time I heard of it was when I ran across it on one of the movie channels during the middle of the day while home sick from work one day circa '07. I did go see him in Half Baked like 4 times the next year. By the way if you watch this scene baked you'll shit your pants.
I love it how he shrieks when he finds out he was chosen for the mission he acted like the winner of the Miss America pageant complete with hand gestures and screaming lol.
He just spoke about this on the latest episode of his podcast the Harland Highway. The script originally had him feinting but he asked for one take where he could do it his way and this is what he did 😂
Yeah Harland Williams talks about the Miss America reaction being his idea for these scene when he was on the Bob & Tom show a few years ago. Originally he was just supposed to stand up and faint but he thought that was too lame and it was his idea to give the reaction you see here.
My personal favorite is when he's showing them how the landing calculations are wrong. "I'll re-enter the calculations using what we like to call 'the right way'."😂 As a data analyst, I find myself using this line at least once a week.
🤣🤣🤣 this scene is absolutely priceless! It still makes me cry laugh so hard! Both of my kids ended up on the floor from laughing so hard. I lost track of how many times they had me rewind it! Harland Williams is the best ever!!!
This movie's decent enough for a family film... but this SCENE!!! HAD to be one of the audition scenes. Harland's PRICE IS RIGHT scream-reaction is incredible! And honorable mentions to everyone's reactions TO Harland, as well as that fun BBC reporter being cut off a bunch of times bit just before the scream.
That's ME standing up to cut him off with my question. Fun once-in-a-lifetime experience as a movie extra. AND my question is a real pivot point of the story.
"Astronaut Fred Randall"
"EEEAHHHHHHHHHGGHHH!!!!!! AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!"
why aren't movies like this anymore?? this is pure comedy!!
That's that Bob Barker Price is Right contestants row scream of joy.
I know right, that was and still funny as hell.. hahshah
Instead of him screaming, I can imagine him falling back fainting.
Best part of the movie!!😂😂😂
Apparently that wasn't in the script. He just told the director to zoom in on him after the announcement......makes it even better! 😂😂
I watched this with my kids years ago. Before that I had NEVER laughed harder at a movie scene, and I have NEVER laughed harder since.
Same here, it's the only time a movie has ever made me laugh until the point my eyes were all watery. That and the isolation tank scene, mainly his little British sock puppets.
The spider scene from home alone was a close match and kills me just about the same.

Harland Williams deserved an award for this performance. That scene was comedy gold.

he was supposed to faint. so glad he did this instead @@spirit_green

@@MegaAvenger2 the screaming and flailing hands.
@@Mia-dt3gl But wasn't a specific model
@@MegaAvenger2 the reaction he gave was a generic and stereotypical pageant reaction to getting crowned.
Greatest performance in cinema history.

My family's favorite movie ever. This is the best scene from a movie full of amazing scenes.
If this movie came out in the 1950's and starred Jerry Lewis, this film would be considered a classic to this day.
Now that scream was just absolutely “snot bubbles funny” 😄 😁 😂
I was taking a dump and this scene popped into my head so I had to look it up! :D
You gotta love the reaction of the director and controller.

Truly, this is probably what EVERY person wanting to go to space must've been like when they got selected.

Even the guy at the podium didn’t want to announce the new astronaut because he knew who it was! 😆
To be fair, Fred did pass almost all the tests, so it was a logical choice...but that didn't make it any easier.😂😂
