  • Col. Edward L. Hubbard spent 2,420 days (over 6 years) as a prisoner of war after being shot down during combat missions over Northern Vietnam. Hubbard was an EB-66C Navigator with the 41st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flying out of Takhli Royal Thai AFB, Thailand during this time. Hubbard was released from captivity during Operation Homecoming on March 4, 1973.
During Edward L. Hubbard's captivity, he was able to teach his fellow POW's tap code and other forms of communication so the whole camp could communicate with the guards knowing. He helped organize the camp's POWs to ensure everyone looked out for each other and make it back home.

The American Veterans Center is a 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to collect as many oral histories from military veterans of all eras with a special focus on WWII. During our annual American Valor show, we bring 20+ WWII veterans and scores of other veterans every year to honor their service and collect their stories. After watching this video for about 5 minutes, it hit me, I know Col. Hubbard. He spoke in Midland, Texas on May 31, 2000, to a packed crowd. Col. Hubbard spoke on lessons learned as a POW, and how he turned that into a positive force for his life. His captivating speech and book, "Escape from the Box: The Wonder of Human Potential", was so beneficial to my Dad at a critical time. Dad, a World War II Artillery Officer in the European Theatre, was in his 5th month of terminal lung cancer. I know Dad read the book several times, and it seemed to give him that extra boost and attitude adjustment that helped him through a bad time. Thanks Col. Hubbard.

It's when I listen to these interviews that I always end up feeling inadequate. Some of these men were really cut from a different cloth. Imagine most of the perpetual children from Gen Z being put in these types of positions...
