Went to the red light district uninformed about living conditions for women. Such fun, when you ignore the poverty, addiction and pimping going on. There's a reason they keep debating their prostitution policy, because giving the green light to brothel owners and johns that most of what they do is a-okay doesn't stop organized crime involvement or violence against women in the trade.
@asdf One can take that view, but still acknowledge the presence of exploitative dynamics instead of talking about it like it's a big sexy party. But aside from that its more tightly regulated in my country Germany than it is in the Netherlands and we have organized gangs pimping and exploiting women all through the country: www.dieunsichtbarenmaenner.wordpress.com/establishments This industry is built on poverty and coercion. Big business pimps in my country openly admit they cant run their brothel chains without trafficking (see the case of the Paradise brothel chain formerly run by now convicted trafficker Jürgen Rudloff). This industry refuses to be regulated. That's why politicians and human rights activist in Central Europe are increasingly looking to adopt Scandinavian style prostitution law, that seeks to decriminalise women and men in prostitution and built support services for them, but goes after pimps and johns. Sounds crazy if all one is familiar with is prohibition or various degrees of regulation, but it's been policy just as long as modern German regulation or Kiwi deregulation law.
@asdf I'm an unpaid volunteer working with an organization run by women in and exited from the sex trade who support the Scandinavian approach. It's impossible to listen to all women with first hand experience of the trade because they vehemently disagree with one another. Its from women in the trade that I know first hand that brothel inspections or licensing is no barrier to exploitation or violence, because any woman no matter the degree of coercion has reasons to tell officials and any john who comes in (usually through a translator because many don't speak the local language) that she is there by choice. Finally if a john can still find prostitution, so can officials. Johns don't have a secret inaccessible network. They use the internet which any dummy can do. But thanks for admitting that a legal industry doesnt cancel out an illegal sector. And yes, I do have an issue with an industry that cant stop the rape and murder of women and girls even inside legal mega brothels with security and cameras. What a strange position to take.
I know the women who run the organization personally and if they were pretending to be (ex) prostitutes and secretly scammers that scam is still waiting to take effect to shower us with money, because everyone I work with is chronically underfunded. Also being screamed at by political opponents, getting threatened and stalked is all part of the fun, except when it isn't. Apart from that I've talked to women who favour legalized brothel keeping and sex buying and they are with few exceptions strongly opposed to the German and Dutch model. They want the Kiwi one, which has the same foundation except minimal regulation. As in smaller brothels don't need a license, individual women don't need a license, theres no illegal practices or regulated prices or regular inspections. So, they do actually support deregulation. And I can understand that since most of them have been failed by public institutions all their life, so why put faith in them now to regulate or abolish violence and exploitation. Maybe you need to sit down with them a bit more, because they're not looking to central Europe for answers anymore. And maybe sit down with women who have literally been enabled by the Swedish model to exit prostitution and start a new life? They're real people. Not mythological creatures.
@@ellyarrow right, the Swedish model which is aimed at eventual abolition of prostitution, yet the numbers both for sex work and trafficking are at records high, where they push sex workers underground, deny them condoms in some of the cities (so as not to encourage prostitution), where they target and deport migrant sex workers under the guise of saving them, where sex workers lose their children or their apartments because of what they do, and where they are prosecuted for brothel keeping if two or more sex workers share an apartment for safety? German and Dutch models are undeniably not good, as is full criminalization like in the US, but the Swedish model is not the be all end all of prostitution regulation. And NZ decriminalization model is not free for all, it just means that sex work is regulated like any other work, and the workers can't be criminalized as the by-product of the law, but instead can take those who mistreat them to court, be they johns, managers, or even the police, and win the case without repercussions. Unlike legalization which encourages brothels and pimping, the goal of NZ model is to do away with the pimping altogether and give power and control to those who sell sex. Meanwhile, the only goal Swedish model has is to eliminate prostitution, without regard for the people they hurt on that mission.
