Saw you on Missouri star live thank you thank you for your service. My husband retired with 42 years in the Army National Guard he and my son served in the same unit till a couple years ago he moved and changed to a unit closer to his house. I have been quilting for about 20 years and in 2 weeks my husband is taking my friend and I to Missouri Star and we cant wait
Helpful hint instead of pinning I use a sew line glue stick for quilting especially for paper piecing. It keeps the fabric in place better when flipping back and forth. Great video
Best paper piecing video I have seen. I've been reluctant to try paper piecing - being a very beginner quilter - but this video has given me the boost I need to try it. TFS (wish there was a "love" button!)
Hand in Hand is the best way to teach, I really love how you go into so much detail and show how to sew the block. I really enjoy the way you teach it does not matter that it takes long it is definitely worth the time spent to know exactly how to make these blocks.
It took me a few minutes to figure out what you were doing, then I had that moment when the light goes on, and I got it. That is a really cool method. TFS
I use those, as well. I also use used dryer sheets as stabilizers for my blocks. They're free and smell wonderful lol. I'm always looking for inexpensive ways to reuse items in my home. God bless!
This quilt is stunning. Legend has it that the Amish hold out a block for a planned mistake called the humility block. They believe that an attempt at human perfection mocks God. Your work is perfect and honors the good lord. By the way thank you for protecting all that I love. And please thank you wife for sacrificing her time with you for us. ❤
Hey Marine. A tip. Tell your new quilters the measurements for cutting your “ pre cuts”. I’m not the quilting police however, I’m a veteran & as an officer I like to break it down so the newbies can get it. It doesn’t really give clear direction in the book & we’re depending on you for information. Hoorah 😃!!!
Wow….I’ve been quilting for 25 years and never attempted this pattern. Your thorough explanations make it seem easy when I know it’s not. I study your videos and have learned a lot from you. Keep it up, Marine Quilter. The quilting world could use a few good marines like you.
Love it! I’m all about color and this quilt is my kinda quilt. I just ordered the book and I’m excited to get started. Great teacher ! Jenny is who I went to when I started quilting earlier this year. Jenny’s laid back approach is a confidence builder. I see you have the same laid back approach. Thank you for your service and for making these videos.
I absolutely love your quilting presentation, sense of humour and detailed information about quilting and life. Thanks from a downunder quilter. 🙋♀️🧵🪡 🥰
OMG. I’m so In Jaw Dropping Awe after seeing your one finished square…that is Breathtakingly Gorgeous!! It was so interesting and fun watching you create your 2nd piece…..you are an outstanding teacher and provide explicit directions not only verbally. It because Yvonne’s incredible videoing you also provide a visual tutorial which means so much!! thanks you two for all you do and the way you do it’s,!! YOU two SO ROCK!! Joan Smith
I've never seen a quilting show like you guys's! Yvonne, you crack me up!! I love how it's truly apparent how much y'all are in love with each other! Mark, thank you so much for your service! May God bless y'all and your family and your endeavors!
The first template "plastic" I remember seeing my mom use was the (washed off) piece of plastic inside a package of bacon. From that I realized there is plastic all thru our modern "trash" piles. I now break down and save clear plastic boxes and pieces that are used to package other things. Definitely keep your eyes open and you will begin to see many things that make fabulous templates! 😁
I just saw you on a Missouri Star video. And now I am subscribed to your channel too. Thank you for your service. My son is a Marine also. I bought a Tee Shirt from Missouri Star that says “Quilting is Cheaper than therapy”. Quilting is also my therapy and stress reliever. Nothing like your experience, I’m sure. I’m going to try your crumb quilt.
Mark, I have an idea for you on making templates. Go to Lowe's glass cutting area. Look in their trash barrel for plexiglass. Depends who is working that department sometimes you can get the remnants for free or a small price. Next step go to decide on what templates you want or need, i.e...4x4. Then go to a glass cutting/plexiglass cutting person and have them cut you your sizes and shapes you need. I did this for when I was making different styles and sizes of face masks. It pretty cheap.
Great work! You can benefit with a seam roller. Very funny with the imaginary fingernails. I have similar problems with no nails so the roller comes in handy.
Such a beautiful block! Thank you for the help I have been scared to start this quilt but now I am going to dive in! Your instructions really help clear up the confusion I had.
Someday I'm going to have to try this one. Right now I'm a little afraid of the curves. I love paper piecing! You guys are great together. Great job teaching this method.
LOVE your videos and instructions. My dog heard Gunner chewing his bone & kept tilting his head at my iPad, “where’s MY treat?” Say Hi to Gunner from Lou Holtz, our mutt and boss!
Thank you so much Mark for breaking it down like this for us. Once I finish this semester in school, I am going to follow this again to make a NY Beauty quilt myself. I appreciate you and your wife for making these videos, for I look forward to every one! Have a great day 😀. Love from Baltimore MD ❤!
@@marshasutton718- Hi Marsha! Yes, I am going to get the nerve to try it as well! I love his videos and it is great to have fellow Marylanders who watch and love them as well! I am excited to see what we come up with!
Love your technique and bold fabrics. Gorgeous colors and this is one quilt I'm wanting. But would love to know where can one get the book that you have used.
I'm not a very experienced quilter like you are, but have you ever tried making the pins you use point TOWARD the seam? You can put the pin just out of reach of your presser foot, so you won't run over of it, and it doesn't cause the little bump along so much length of the pin. Try it. You have my high esteem for your skill and finesse with the fabric and machine, and you seem very personable and humble. Hi to your wonderful wife! OH! Have you ever tried Accuquilt Go dies? Your stitching is just so perfect, beautiful points. Did you change to a 1 stitch length just so the paper would come off easier?
I'm trying to follow the videos, wondering if there has been discussion of the final quilt. Love your teaching style, so accessible. What will the finished project look like? If this is covered in a blog or somewhere please, if someone could link it, I would appreciate! Thanks and carry on! Look forward to the next installment!
About stitch length: I wouldn't go lower than 1.5 -- because it may tear your paper pattern before you're ready to remove it, and if you ever had to rip out your stitches, it would be impossible to rip out a 1.0 stitch length, without tearing your paper or worse, your fabric (or both!). Just a suggestion!!
i was watching one of your clips and i think you folks said your comming here to idaho? i hope im home when you folks come over cuz i would like to meet both of you. i was in georgia for a while but i was taking care of a friend and found your town but we was to far away to come visit you and meet you. its late but we are having a quilt show may 20, 21, 22 if you all could get a both and say hello that would be cool. but i hope i dont miss you folks when you come over. jan from nampa idaho
I’ve looked thru all of my subscribed videos and haven’t found a quilt that you sew the squares on three sides stuff and attach to the next piece. Puff quilt maybe? Is this anything you have done or would consider doing? Have I over looked it?
If you go to Florida down around Fort Walton,Destin area you can get you a whatta burger. I am from Tulsa Oklahoma but I now live in Georgia and I have been Wanting a Whatta burger here for the last 35 years. I am hoping they will get here before long.
Hi, you need to adjust the tension of your thread a little bit, It's so tight. Or when you cut off the thread, cut it a bit longer then press out the stich out a bit to help the krinkle of the fabric on the right side. Thanks, learn something from you and i order the book from you to try on.
If you ever have trouble staying on your line, you can stop sewing to lift your presser foot and maneuver your fabric so you are able to sew on the line.
Where did you find the beautiful colored fabric used in this block (with the circles) ? I love it ! And I always enjoy your videos and have learned tons from you, thank you !
Great video, thanks Mark. The author of the book, Cinzia White (pronounced "Chin-zee-ah", I think), *DOES* instruct adding a 1/4" seam allowance to each pattern piece in her book -- Page 9, #2. I'm sure the reason she didn't include it in her patterns is that it would've taken even more pages to fit all the patterns, which adds costs to producing the book, so it would have to be priced higher. I for one am happy to add my own seam allowances if it saves me $'s! :-) ~Diana K.
You seem to have a bit of a problem with "finger pressing". If I may suggest this idea - invest in a seam roller (a very inexpensive tool from the fabric shop). This will save your finger nails and does a perfectly fine job at flattening the seams as well.

Thank you Mark for walking us through Paper Piecing. Thank you for the close ups, Yvonne.
I use thin plastic chopping mats ( for food) from dollar tree to trace my pattern pieces on. To make a template. It’s stiff enough to trace around.
I cut them into rectangles to use inside flat bottom tote bags. Don't use the dryer though..
Using the thin plastic chopping boards are cheaper than template plastic.
Me too, really good tip from some hardworking quilters' video.
I use those, as well. I also use used dryer sheets as stabilizers for my blocks. They're free and smell wonderful lol. I'm always looking for inexpensive ways to reuse items in my home. God bless!

Making this block is easy.
