Thanks man!I got it now, after months and months of continuous thumb-bleeding slaps and coordination of all those notes. I'm now teaching a buddy of mine to crack it. Also, thanks to the master himself,Victor Wooten. Peace!
YYYYYAAAAYYYYY!!!! I look up a tutorial and it's by you, the mad humble teacher and talented player who also taught me that sweet double thumb in e riff! there is justice in the world
Bravo!!!! Excellent job.. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for sharing it with the bass playing community. You are a world class player and a truly gifted musician....
I'm just starting to play the e-bass and I'm grateful for tutorials like this. If one day I'll play like you, I'd be happy! Thanks for the vid, you're great.
Your way of playing it will help me with my double thumb skills. I've also been struggling to figure out the different variations within the groove, so that's a huge help, too. I just started learning this jam a week ago, so I'm still garbage on it, but I'll have it sounding decent in about.... ohhh.... 5 or 6 years maybe? 😄 Very interesting to see how many different ways people play it, but it always sounds great.
@SuperNikiRock Yes you're right, I noticed that myself a while ago, but never bothered to annotate it in the video. I will do that now, so thanks for the heads up! ;-)
@calebkirubakaran If you want a double thumb tutorial, I'd really suggest checking MarloweDK's one...unfortunately, I can't post the link here cause RUclips won't allow me to, but if you go to his channel, just search for 'double thumb tutorial'...you should find a video of 8 minutes, that's the one ;) I won't be able to explain it any clearer than he did there :p
I wouldn't say it's necessary, but it certainly helps. Lighter gauge means you can apply less force when tapping. Another thing you might want to do is try lowering the the strings, so they're closer to the fretboard.
man, are´u speciallized in wooten´s songs? Excellent tutorial to correct my mistakes.. at least this song helps me develop strenght in my fingers and hands. But to play this until the end is a battle
@steenbass This bass has 24 frets. I would've used a bass with fret markers, but this song really needs the 24th fret and this is my only 24-fretted bass :) But to give you an idea: the main part (like Pattern 1) is mostly played within the first three frets. The bridge-like part (Pattern 4) is played between the 3rd and 5th fret. The chorus like part (pattern 7) is played between fret 3 and 8.
@hecbiz75 Haha yes, I agree, my left hand looks weird in the video. It's something I've been working on since. After all, I don't wanna end up with all sorts of injuries :)
wow man thats some seriously talented stuff! im trying to learn this song at the moment but im finding the whole thumb technique really hard work :/ i know victor has already done it but do u reckon u could make a video showing how to do the thumb technique?? i recon u could probably do a better job at showing it :) i think i can almost thumb down its just thumbing up which i find most difficult ;P but yea man it would much appreciated if u could :)
Hey, there's no need for me to do a video :) Whenever someone asks about a double thumb tutorial, I refer them to the tutorial by MarloweDK, see video v=tM7EOeaybL4 . I can't explain it any better than him ;)
Practised for five hours now. My fingers are black from the strings, I got blisters on every finger, my thigh got a cramp and I might've broken one of my fingers. So worth it
There are all kinds of basses, but you don't really need a special bass for this particular song. The main differences between basses are the sound (which depends on the wood/eletronics), the number of frets, neck scale, string spacing etc. For instance, if you have small hands, you might consider a bass with a smaller string spacing. When choosing a bass, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable when playing ;)
dear yurtle thnx for the tutorial. decided im buying a bass (decent one) and with a little guitar experiance i was hoping to make this my first song. i know it sounds dodgy but ive got the time. would you have any idea of the amount of time needed to be able to play a piece of this song and all of it? are there any major differences in basses as there are in guitars? are there any basses designed for different scales or tuning specific that would not be recommended for this playstyle? thnx
Yea, I think it would make a nice 2nd bass. It's relatively cheap (I think I payed 400 euros). Compared to my marcus miller fender, the string spacing is a bit smaller, so fingerstyle is a bit easier I suppose. I guess the best thing to do is just to try it, if there's a music store in your neighbourhood. Often the larger music store's offer a 30-day money back guarantee, so in that case, you could even just order it, try it at home and send if back if it doesn't work out ;)
@Simon903 Aaah there's your problem. This bass has 24 frets. 20 frets is quite normal tho'. My other two basses have 20 and 22 frets. But anyways, you can try tapping that high G one octave lower, for instance on the 17th fret of the D-string :)
Could you please do a right hand technique video? This stuff is awesome, and helps my left hand a lot, but I'm completely lost on right hand technique.
The reason why i ask is that when I try to hit that high note around 00:22 I can't go that high even though I'm on standard EADG tuning. I'm trying to figure out if it's because I have less frets than most bass guitars. Mine has 20. Thanks for your help!
hey man I've been playin bass for around 8 years and have been playin an epi thunderbird for about 4 of them. Im actually looking into the bass you play in this vid (rockbass corvette standard passive?) any thoughts on it and would you recommend getting it as a a 2nd bass?
Being able to play this is complicated, but coming up with a riff like that is on another level of comlexity
My exact thoughts lol 😳 how tf do you think of something genius like this.
Man, good on you for actually being able to slow it down that much and still groove... that's harder than playing it at tempo!
Intro: 00:13 Pattern 1: 00:44 Pattern 2: 03:40 Pattern 3: 04:51 Pattern 4: 05:45 Pattern 5: 08:03 Pattern 6: 10:04 Pattern 7 (part one): 12:36 Pattern 7 (part two): 13:03 Pattern 8: 14:06
Thank you so much ....
Still complicated as hell.
I don't think I would've been able to play this song without this video. You are awesome.
Thanks man!I got it now, after months and months of continuous thumb-bleeding slaps and coordination of all those notes.
I'm now teaching a buddy of mine to crack it.
Also, thanks to the master himself,Victor Wooten.
Peace!
Here are all of the parts for you all: Intro: 00:13 Pattern 1: 00:44 Pattern 2: 03:40 Pattern 3: 04:51 Pattern 4: 05:45 Pattern 5: 08:03 Pattern 6: 10:04 Pattern 7 (part one): 12:36 Pattern 7 (part two): 13:03 Pattern 8: 14:06
Enjoy guys :)
I’d thank you if the timestamps worked :/
You are a good man, thankyou
This helped me a lot. 11 yrs ago I watched and learned from this. Still grateful to you, bro.
YYYYYAAAAYYYYY!!!! I look up a tutorial and it's by you, the mad humble teacher and talented player who also taught me that sweet double thumb in e riff! there is justice in the world
I spent two a solid 2 hours today working on the main riff. It's fun to play and quite challenging!
This was SUCH a good tutorial, thank you so much. Been having fun with this song
Bravo!!!! Excellent job.. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for sharing it with the bass playing community. You are a world class player and a truly gifted musician....

Please bring back your old covers of the songs I think they’re awesome!!!
Mate, thanks for your tutorial; you've broken it down so well that after watching your video it makes sense! It will help me out heaps! Cheers!

Thank you kind sir! It all makes sense to me now. I mean the technique. Watching Victor do it, all you can do is say WOW!
@SuperNikiRock Yes you're right, I noticed that myself a while ago, but never bothered to annotate it in the video. I will do that now, so thanks for the heads up! ;-)
Great job after all this years!
Such a great tutorial. Going to put a cover of this on the channel once done! Thanks so much.

@canariasmovies hehe thanks! Yes I agree with the fret markers, maybe I'll try using coloured tape next time (this is my only 24-fretted bass) ;-)
Great tutorial! thanks!

@oOkitsterOo I learned it mostly by ear and I also watched some videos where he plays it live to get a rough idea.
Wooow... Thank for this tutorial!!! I Like It...
Love you dude!!
Dude! Great job.
that stretch on pattern 5 is just ridiculous!

Your wrist up technique makes it really hard to see what notes we're actually supposed to hit. )X
Yes, it's all standard tuning ;)
Tnx lot you.I am sri lanka .very clear lessons .tnx lot

@YertleTheTurtle87 Hahaha, thanks so much bro!! I hope soon!
Thanks beatyful!!
3:40 This is so I don't have to go skipping around to see where I'm at
How do you make that prrcussive whack noise?
Where did you get that shirt? I like it.
@TheTcbassist You're welcome :)
I feel like if you play this kind of stuff it will sound much better on warwick basses and foderas rather than a jazz bass
Awesome man. How many (light) years did you need to learn this:)
+MrJimiHancock probably none because a lightyear is a unit of distance not time.
Great tutorial, thanks a lot!!
It would make following a little easier if your nice Warwick bass would have fret marks ;))
