Bob Dylan going electric. Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk. Queen at Live Aid. Elvis Presley singing Hound Dog and gyrating his hips. Beethoven debuting his 9th Symphony. Nirvana on MTV Unplugged. All of these are influential moments in music history. Without moments like the Sugarhill Gang reaching the Top 40, we never would have had rappers like Kendrick Lamar or the Notorious B.I.G. Without Madonna performing Like a Virgin on the MTV Awards, we never would have had Britney Spears singing Baby One More Time. Music legends like Johnny Cash, The Who, Freddie Mercury and more mad moments that shaped music history, and changed modern music forever. WatchMojo is picking the most important moments in music history; check it out to see if your favorite music moments made the list!

Beethoven’s 9th is something that is written in history books in multiple countries. So that should be the top. I love classic rock but seriously you going to put Beethoven below Cash, Hendrix, and Nirvana??????
Jonathan Bennett there has been some recent evidence that he might have invented a bone conduction speaker so he could 'feel' the music while composing. That symphony is amazing!!
Billy Joel's 100th msg show!

Beethoven: Shit I can't hear.
Also Beethoven: Hold my beer.
True.
No Mozart?

Rappers Eminem is too afraid to diss
how about Bach?
A guy writes an entire orchestrated symphony while DEAF and it's #9 on the list..... Okay.
poetnk pop culture for you
Which I do agree with you it should have been #2, but when it comes to the Beatles, they will always be #1
Tommye Bunn Yes they will always be #1
poetnk not really in the same category ate, stop whining
Tommye Bunn Why? How are the Beatles more important than say J.S. Bach, who literally solidified tonal harmony in the history of Western music? This tonal system that Bach advanced and perfected is what almost all pop music is based on, including the Beatles. Without Bach, it’s doubtful if the Beatles could have ever created their music. What have the Beatles in comparison ever advanced in music theory? I know you may love the Beatles but that is no grounds for evaluating their musical importance.
Beethoven: writes ninth symphony
Watch mojo: Nirvana on MTV is more iconic
99% of WatchMojo's videos need to be re-written.
DEAF......don't forget deaf😤😂
BeastBoxGaming that’s not true at al. The number of people who know Beethoven is far greater than nirvana.
Cos most people couldn't give a fuck about some dusty pianist
@@mattwroe4776 Ok braindead dumbass
Imagine watching The Beatles that day in person.
Are you trying to make us sad
Wasn't their breakthrough, just their arrival in the US. Doesn't compare to the importance of their breakthrough concert back in England, nor to most of the never-filmed events that Watchmojo can't show, like the invention of the modern musical scale in Bach's lifetime, the first independent music star in western culture (maybe Mozart) or the invention of the guitar.
Right how cute where they!!!!
Imagine being at MTV unplugged with nirvana
@@tylerthecreator8573 you typed that as I’m listening to “the man who sold the world”

Nick Hall i guess but still

Tristan yea but u needa work hard inorder to get something that u want. Nothing is easy really
Beethoven should be higher, most everyone was literally too afraid to write a symphony after that for a long time
John Kiunke ahh I see you have Mozart in your pfp from Amadeus.
Because no one cared
And he was deaf
I’m not sure they are in an order though

Beethoven literally composed the parts of 20+ instruments to work together in one piece that’s still today considered the greatest piece of musical Melody in history, WHILE HE WAS DEAF!!! Most people can’t even rhyme
EidanMA most of Beethoven’s greatest songs/compositions where before 1801 where he still had %40 of his hearing and was age 31. It wasn’t until 1816 he was completely deaf and age 46. People have a misconception of him and believe he was deaf from a child, he was 26 when he started loosing his hearing.
What he DEAF no way?
@@faronwatts4048, you're right about when he actually went deaf, but the ninth composed between 1822 and 1824, when he was deaf.
Jesse Watts I was referring directly to the 9th which was composed after he was fully deaf; however, I do appreciate the extra information tho

Marty McFly not to be dramatic or anything, but I love you.
Marty McFly yea my grandmother almost was arrested for towing us behind the car on skateboards in Gettysburg national park, great influence lol
Rock n roll actually started in 1951 with the song "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston And His Delta Cats. But it's elements go back as far as the 1800s with the blues.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I give you….The Beatles!” Most significant phrase in music history. 60 years later, they’re still loved, their music is still played and they’re bring rediscovered by new listeners. Who will know most of these others in 10 years, let alone 60?
My father went accidentally to live AID on 1985. He wanted to see LED zeppelin reunite and he saw Freddie’s performance too
"accidentally"
I don’t even know how he did that but I don’t even care
they felt they would get thrashed if they didnt include one of today's non-transcendental "artists". They backfired

Queen at Live Aid, was called "The greatest rock performance of the 20th century", and it was. i was there. It was untouchable.

Damn. You are right. I used to think I was born in the wrong generation because I just cant enjoy modern music (pop music) that is. But I never thought about having the technology in our generation to be able to still enjoy all of the great music of the world regardless of age and genre. You sir taught me something. Thank you.
Clicking on a video does not give you back the real vibes and the the vision of those days.
True. I live in the Middle East, and if I was alive 40-30 years ago, I would have never been able to listen to this great music and I would have never been exposed to it. Actually, I only discovered true Rock and Roll when I was 20 years old because of RUclips. I never listened to this music on mainstream Arabic radios or music channels. Its only possible now because of RUclips and the development in Internet

You're saying that Nirvana on MTV is ahead of BEETHOVEN PREMIRING THE 9TH SYMPHONY?!?!?!?!
The moment you put ANYONE that is not BACH or MOZART ahead of Beethoven, doesn't make any sense!!!
Someone's triggered.
Why so much hate? classical artists would probably be rock stars if that existed in their time
YES
No way to really say any of these moments are definitively better than the other it's all relative
Just theoretically, Beethoven's music was heard (at the time) by maybe a few thousand people. Maybe a few dozens of thousands of people heard of his music at the time. At the same time, all of the music that was rated hire then him was either heard by millions upon millions of people or heard of by hundreds of millions of people.

Queen at number 5. You’ve got to be kidding me. 27 minutes of pure genius music

Come on, Beethoven wrote the 9th all in his head.
The man was deaf at the time but knew exactly what each and every note would sound like. And he wrote it for a full orchestra at that. If that doesn't grant you number one of ALL TIME, then there is no sense in even doing these lists. Not to mention that it is awesome to boot.
I will grant you the Queen and Freddie spots. And the Beetles did change the face of rock.
And Hendricks? The MASTER OF THE STRATOCASTER.
Elvis? Well hell son. He kicked in the door and all the rest followed.
Tough to argue against that my friend.
Good point. I agree with your Beethoven comment. Everything else is subjective to each individual. It's like the saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I'm sure my tastes are different from yours but we can agree that it moves us powerfully. And that's why influence is seen in so many artists, songs, dance moves, and endless compositions.
The only problem of the 9th is that it is hell to sing... Waay to high for comfort...
Lol just because Elvis popularized something doesnt mean he started it. Rock N Roll started in black communities, evolving from guitar heavy blues. Elvis and the Beatles did not start it.

I absolutely love that Nirvana Unplugged was ahead of Beethoven’s 9th. For real though, that unplugged album changed my life, it was filmed on my 10th Birthday, and I play that album still to this day. Best acoustic album of all time
Bro first of all, november 18th. We have the same birthday. But from a nirvana super fan to another, do you really think it should be above beethoven orchestrating a whole symphony deaf?
Micheal jackson moonwalking is the most important moment in all of human history
i’d probably say the end of the holocaust is more important but you do you
No... The Beatles' British Invasion is the most important in pop music history because it ended the classical era.
Just thought of another one... Aretha Franklin stepping in at the last minute for Pavarotti and performing Nessun Dorma at the Grammys. An amazing performance, with no rehearsal. She showed why she was considered the Queen of Soul, even singing opera... a true professional and a legend.

I can’t get my over how I can literally hear Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry in the Beatles singing style here.
Best part of this vid is the way the narrater said “number 5”. (And Freddie Mercury’s tribute concert - that is hella underrated).
One could argue that the most important MOMENT in music history was the day when John Lennon and Paul McCartney met.

They changed Fashion,Photography and much else bridging the gap between The USA and Britain and Europe. They sold more records than anyone else.Their songs were, mostly, different from each other and they had 3 musical genius's in the same Band....so it should have been "BEST OF THE REST" lol

Good lord. Gagnam Style might be an honorable mention for most important moments in music video history, but music history???
valid point 👍
As much as i hate Gangnam Style and wondered what's all the fuss with people going crazy over that when it's launched. It's actually (sadly) part of music history too (to an extend).
Because music video history is part of music history at this era of modern music industry and internet.
The use of internet viral marketing and influence is what make some of the artist of current genereration bloom...
Sadly. I also fall for the viral when Gangnam Style launched, curiousity get the best of me too see what's all with the fuss... It's good for the laughs when i saw them, but as far as the music itself... meeh.
But I do fall and help the viral by viewing and talking it...
We can Thanks (I'd rather blame) Psy and Gangnam Style for making Bieber, Despacito, and some other viral artist bloomer what it is, and as big as now...
Lo Pan style was better; sends Gagnam Style to a Hell where are skinned alive!
It changed the behaviour to virus songs tho, its important whether we like it or not
Viral music propagation goes back a very long time. Just look at the early Beatles popularity in the US. One Ed Sullivan show and they go from nobodies to the top in a matter of weeks.
I don't think Psy "changed music" so much as he did what many, many artists have done over the years...utilized the technological zeitgeist (much like artists of the eighties used MTV and music videos) to produce a single popular song. Being another video based, one hit wonder is nothing new or special.

Good to see Johnny cash he's rarely mentioned nowadays
Cash is probably a piece of american history and/or culture. Nevertheless this amazing artist I discovered lately is fairly unknown and somehow no that important in "music history" as mentioned. Dylan also was a wonderful artist and his heritage and influence on pop/rock music is amazing. But I wouldn't say he has been more important to "music history" than Mozart, Bob Marley, US for Africa, Pierre Henry (first electronic music artist ever) and certainly a hundred more artist I don't know about (and I want to discover). But Mojo made their pick ;-)
Good to see Johnny Cash being recognized as he paved the way for so many future generations....and that truly was a great performance and controversial in many ways so it deserves a spot here!!

That pretty much marked the end for them. On Sullivan, they reached a whole new audience and paved the way for other British acts to make it in the States.

Young Elvis used to perform in a 5 start hotel in New York when his career was about to get started and my dad used to work there. He got pretty closed to young Elvis since he always joined the table during my dad's dinner brake. My dad got a few picture with him since he always had a couple photographers from the hotel following him around and my dad proudly hang it on the bedroom wall. It's always the first thing that I want to show off
I always see American ignoring bob Dylan where Bob is the real singer of America who made famous the American folk song throughout the world ...... I always see queen, Johnny cash, Beatles, where as Bob Dylan is the one who truly cared about music and lyrics
1: Freddie Mercury is born

@@mattheil6028 This is just absurd. everyone is a no.1 fan of Freddy
@Irfan Spirtovic That comparison makes no sense and is irrelevant.
All these people have one thing in common: they’re different. They went against the grain and shuffled things up. All well deserved.
Declan moore not really, it was the first video to hit 1 billion views and literally broke RUclipss view counter, also it popularized kpop and other foreign music.
Not to mention, those people all had TRUE talent back then!!

Agree. Not enough slots for all history of the greatest musical genious of all time there are too many
The Beatles deserve the no. One spot. I love em
i bet Bono and a few others regret the day they shared the stage with Freddie, none of then commanded the stage as he did, he showed them how it was done.
Bach, starting the entire western music legacy : Am I a joke to you ?
