This is why RUclips is so great. Years and years later you can experience something you’d missed years earlier. Swamp Thing has been a favorite since the late ‘80s!
You know, not enough Chameleon fans comment about how amazing Mark's voice is!!! He sounds just as powerful live as he does on his recordings. Hardly EVER misses a note or sings out of tune --- which can happen during a live performance if the singer can't hear himself too well. I mean, Marks voice always sends chills up my spine.
I saw this show in Detroit, and it was SO epic it literally changed my life. After the show I had the priviledge of talking to Mark and John for over 2 hours. They were so gracious and kind and giving to all of (us) fans. I think the only way I'd top this night would be talking to Bowie for 2 hours :-D
Apologies to Reg and Dave, but this might just be the definitive live recording captured of this unbeatable classic. It's basically flawless. Altana and Dwerryhouse absolutely kill it.
This is easily one of the highest quality live performances I've ever seen posted, regardless of the fact that it's one of my most loved songs of -All time-. Kudos.
@pagepmeyer its a sad but at the same time a beautiful treasure that some of us know this band....love the fact that they are and always will be underground..
Thanks so much for uploading this. I remember this tour very well. I have to say that I enjoyed these concerts much more than the shows on the reunion tour. Why? I still remember the last Chameleons concert in Bremen. I had the impression that no all members of the band were enjoying it. At least one of them had a clear lack of motivation and you could see that he was only in for the money. Very sad. They split again soon after that.
No one doubts that Monkeyland's intro vocals are out of key, but it took me a while to realize that Mark had done this on purpose, as the backing melodies are moving around quite a bit. He was even able to repeat it the same way live. Look up live versions. Other than that, he's always pretty spot on in his typical head-first way. Great band all around!
This song still gives me goose bumps! I discovered this song at my favorite club of all time, Manray in Boston, which sadly closed in 2005. Is there a good quality posting of the album version on RUclips per chance?
No It's Yves Altana (guitar on the left) & Neil Dwerryhouse (guitar on the right) and of course John Lever (on drums) and Mark Burgess (on vocals and bass). Great tune !!!
I wish I knew more people who loved the Chameleons as much as I do

That Riff is from another world holy shit

@Something Real1119: I agree. I've always thought that too. Deserves to be much better known.
Agree!
Even with chewing gum he sings like a God
My library used to hire records. This one is the first I rented aged 14. It changed my life. Thanks Chameleons xxx
Stunning version. John Lever - completely frictionless. Brilliant stuff.
