    50 years ago I took all of my swim lessons on Silver Beach. The building remnants are those of a Convent that was wiped off the island in the 38 hurricane (I think that was the hurricane) Some time in the 70's the power company wanted to build a generation plant on that island. And keep in mind that several people have drown being swept off that bar as the tide is coming in.

    Thanks for the great video, I'm going to check the tide charts for sure and do this walk next month!

      Good luck! It can be tricky getting the timing right. Also, I read that if the high tide is less than +0.5 feet, or something like that, then it may be closed.

    Thanks for the wonderful video, and a huge thanks for not ruining it with crappy background music.
    I don't know why some people feel compelled to add annoying background music throughout their videos.

    I went out there in my Dad's small sailboat in 74', anchored offshore and did some serious exploring in the middle before there was any trail. I succeded in finding something worth all the crawling through the underbrush - a 6ft shrine of Virgin Mary, which I learned later must have been leftover from when a monastery was there.

      @@jlucasound I was 17 and had spent summers in the junior sailing program at Milford Yacht Club for several years. We had a tradition back then of a "Around The Island Race" to end the summer, followed by the mooring of the boats and going onto the little sandy beach for a cookout. So much fun ! I guess that was why I was curious afterwards to check out every inch of the island I could get to.

      Yes, I heard about that! I don't know if it's gone now, but I didn't see it.

    I ride to the parking lot, from work, some days (3 times so far) and have my lunch at Silver Sands! I did not know about this Island. I've only been at my new job for two years. I will have to ask the "natives" at work about it. Thanks for taking us there! 🏝🐣🚶🙂

    Tomorrow is Sept. 9th. Now I can think about getting out there to take this hike. Before the Snow Flies! 😲🌨 Thanks for the heads up on the time table. I am sure getting stranded out there in January could be deadly.🕒🕔🌒❄🥶

    How high does the sandbar get once it covers the sand? My Dad use to carry me to the sandbar when I was little at Sound View. There was a spot of water that went over our heads and then we would be on the sandbar. So smooth and soft😃

    • @fleabittenwalkanddrive
      @fleabittenwalkanddrive  Месяц назад

      Not sure. Another commenter said that it can get over 6 feet deep at high tide.

    How deep, at high tide, is the water over the sand bar?

    • @fleabittenwalkanddrive
      @fleabittenwalkanddrive  Месяц назад

      I'm not 100% sure, but I think only maybe a foot or two????? Don't try to walk through it though, I hear there are very strong currents there!

      @@fleabittenwalkanddrive It can be four to six feet, small power boats often cross it at high tide as a shortcut into Milford Harbor. If low tide is overnight, fishermen will tell you active deer herds from shore routinely go out there to feed. Many people have been lost here over the years trying to walk the bar when the tide overtakes them.

    At one time a nuclear reactor was considered for this island.

    • @fleabittenwalkanddrive
      @fleabittenwalkanddrive  Месяц назад

      Interesting. I never heard that. It would have to be a pretty small nuclear reactor though.
