Thanks to your video I went and re watched my bluray copy of King Arthur 2004 directors cut and yeah it really doesn't hold up. Thinking about it the roman family living over the wall made no sense why would a high authority Roman go beyond the safety and protection of the wall where not only the Saxons but Merlins army could have attacked them or capture him for ransom?
To the OP and others who have happened or will happen upon this video: it is my very strong opinion that the effort to make a dark and gritty retelling of the Arthurian Myth is an exercise in futility - because there already exists such a film, 1981's Excalibur, the miraculous, dark, dazzling, heady, and STRAIGHT UP FUCKING NUTS Arthurian retelling by British filmaker John Borman. It's taking all the will power I have to not launch into an entire reflection and analysis of the film right here in the comments. Alas, I will save the effort and suggest that you -- nay, implore that you -- NAY, INSIST / DEMAND / PLEAD that, if you have not done so already, go forth and find Excalibur (1981) and clear your schedule, and your mind... because this version of the Arthurian adventure will blow fucking both, along with everything else you thought you knew about Arthur Pendragon, his degenerate rapist father, Uther Pendragon (played by a young and brilliant Gabriel Byrne), his cunning, incestuous half sister Morgana (more commonly known as Morgan LeFay, played by partially nude Helen Mirren), the levity-bringing lovable sorcerer Merlin (played by the brilliant Nicol Williamson in hands down the best version of Merlin ever seen on the big screen), and so many others, too many to mention (except these: a young Liam Neesom playing a drunken Sir Gawain whose boozy-eyed gossip sets up a joust to the death between 2 knights - one of them, Sir Lancelot... and the other, a young Patrick Stewart as the lone loyalist to the fledgling King Arthur, Leondegrance of Camelyard. Fun facts: Leondegrance gets his castle seiged for showing loyalty to Arthur, and.... Patrick Stewart looks exactly the same age in this film as he did and Star Trek the next generation as he did in the X-Men movies. the guy just doesn't age yet he's always looked 82!)

Ya know, I don't think I ever actually saw King Arthur. Which is weird cause it would have been right up my alley at that age but it never happened.
I would be very curious to hear your opinion of it without the nostalgia bias.

Despite its problems…I have always really liked this movie.
That is very fair. I know I came down kinda hard on it, but hope I was able to highlight its good ideas and qualities which are definitely there.

John Boorman’s Excalibur is indeed excellent, and it certainly wears its R-Rating with pride.
