- On May 13, 2003, the U.S. government unveiled a new version of the $20 bill - the first to be colorized in an effort to thwart counterfeiters.
STORYLINE:
Government officials in the U.S. introduced the new twenty dollar bill in Times Square, New York, by unveiling a large billboard showing the new bill.
Thomas Ferguson, Director of the Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and Marsha Reidhill, Assistant Director for Cash and Fiscal Agency of the Federal Reserve Board, showed the new twenty dollar bill to reporters in front of the billboard and then spent it to buy a T-shirt from a local street vendor.
In Washington D.C. an employee of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing was the first to cash in one of the new twenty dollar bills, by feeding it into a vending machine at a post office in exchange for stamps.
Michael Stenger, of the Washington D.C. field office for the U.S. Secret Service, said the new bill will be harder to counterfeit due to its greater complexity, including the addition of colours other than the traditional green.
The new twenty dollar bill now contains green, peach and blue colors in the background.
