THANK YOU for returning the weirs chickens to the shed. They deserve their own private place of residence. They were well and truly doomed in the big hoop-coop with the riffraff birds ;)
😅 the riff-raff. I see how it is. The aristocracy get their own private residence and dinner table 'cause that blue blood under their thin skin is just not very robust. They get by on looks while the peasants are scratching for a living. 😅
Weirdly enough I have ever separated my birds. I have lost a few over the years to random things but not once has a silkie ever been killed by the other birds. Infact right now my silkie is my best brooder. The rooster really really likes her.
@@FeedMeSalt They are too docile (silkies), they tend to be picked on heavily by more aggressive/domineering bigger breeds. That's why they say to keep them separated. You may just have some docile nice bigger girls/boys.
I love the weird chickens and hope you get more. I think these chickens should be kept separate as the other birds are very rude. They seem very happy in the brooder.
Aww, poor Bette but thank goodness you got to her in time. Thinking it's probably better to keep them separate especially after seeing how the others would just walk on her. Seems so strange that you still have no consistent snow, but it's cold enough to freeze the cattles water, and poor Bette. Love the funny bear hat, looks like it keeps you nice and warm. Thanks Morgan for the update of the recent happenings on Gold Shaw Farm, always appreciated.🎉❤️👍
When I've watched in the past I've often worried about the smaller birds getting enough feed. When you were feeding the geese in the pasture, I was wishing that you had some long, narrow troughs instead of the round pans. The bigger, more dominant birds won't let the smaller ones get near. I'm sure that you keep an eye on their condition. I am so happy that the smaller birds are separated.
Good job moving them back to the shed, think that was the solution. You can always make them a little safety corral if you need to move them back in with the big birds.
The weird chickens should be separated from the flock. I've said this multiple times. They would be highly stressed with the other birds. They can go in the hoop coup, but it would need to be separated in a mesh cage and also heat lamp, so the other birds cannot access them.
I agree this is the best solution. This way they'd get the benefits of the hoop coop without the perils. I don't want to be too hard on him because I know he does care, but I don't know what he was thinking knowing how rough the other birds are. It really should have been obvious to him to do that from the start.
I believe Morgan was going for winter chore efficiency when he moved the Zen Chicken Coop into the hoop house. But it has become very apparent that the fancy breeds need more tender care. I am sure they all will now flourish in the brooder coop, and new Silkie arrivals in the spring will be welcomed to the weird chicken flock.
Very interesting information about poultry and drastic temperature changes. So glad that Betty Boop is back to living her best weird chicken life. ❤ Thank goodness you check your animals midday. ❤
You did the right thing about the shed, Two problems resolved. One regular chickens won’t eventually pick on them until they die. Secondly keeping them dry. Being dry is key, not necessarily keeping them warmer. Wet feet is death to chickens. I’m very careful to clean my water cans away from the run and try not to spill water on the ground. Even the larger chickens need their feet dry. Ducks and geese have feet meant for water, but not chickens. So I try to keep my RIR’s feet dry, too.
Can’t imagine how hard it’s been dealing with the loss of Rosey and Rosette and then almost losing Bette!! You always do right by your animals and trying to balance your farm work and your love for them is not something most would be good at! ❤ They look so fluffy and happy in the shed though, I hope that they’ll do better in there!! ❤
Aw poor little Bette - glad you found her. Silkies can be bit daft - their pom-poms limit their vision but also hide the hole in their skull. Mine are quite hardy but not compared to a goose! Nice Silkie rap song! Happy New Year from the Shire 🌳
When a bird is in that situation you take extreme measures. The Silkies and mixes are not meant to be with livestock birds. They are the finer breeds that are lap chickens. Love the bear!
I am a bit mad you hadn’t separated the weird chickens. I’ve been seeing the white ones get trampled quite a bit. That said, glad they are safe now! Good job!
The fancy chickens are my favorite, so little & pretty. Glad they'll be safe in their own private domicile with plenty of room to do fancy chicken living.
So why not put the ice chunks from the troughs outside the pens so there is no mess in the spring? I always see you putting them right where the animals walk in front of the troughs. 🤔
Good move giving them a separate home. They just got run over by the other birds. Perhaps the other 2 that died had some internal injuries from being stepped on/smashed. They are so sweet and make good mums. Don't give up on them.
Silkies are great incubators. Much better than using artificial incubators because, if the electricity goes off, you won't lose the eggs. I don't know the advantages/disadvantages of the polish chickens...
My late husband was a Keeper at the Ft Worth Zoo for 25+ years. They always have a small flock of silkies. They hatched out all kinds of birds...all the way from owls, to flamingos. Randall would say that silkie hens would try to hatch a golf ball!

Toby dog had a Ron Swanson like vegan bacon moment with those minnows.😂Yes we must protect the weird chickens at all costs…my heart can’t take anymore😢
As I watch you break the ice with your shovel, I keep thinking if the shovel had holes in it, it would remove the ice while leaving the water in the container. Have a great 2024! 🎉
The look BB gave you it's hilarious : "Who is this two heads creature"? And thank you for moving the lovely weirdas to their own hotel; they're fragile and need ultra care🐥
If you intend to have the silkies with the main-flock you NEED to trim the feathers around the eyes. Otherwise they'll become docile enough that there is a big chance that they'll be trampled on (7:04) which could lead to death. Honestly, I suggest you separate them if you do not comply with this, cause it's not a question of "if" and more about "when" at this stage.
Just wondering why theres no bedding in the elevated chicken house? And why the bottom area isn't enclosed somehow? ( It could be a toasty secluded laying box area.... ) Bottom warmth is SO important....... NOT trying to be "judgemental'. Thank you for your very helpful AND entertaining (🥰👍👍) content!! 👃✌️🇨🇦🥰
I gotta say: I'm kind of face-palming over this. Didn't you originally have the silkies separated over concerns about their safety, or something? It's been a while since I checked in with this channel, so hopping in to see this has caught me by surprise.
Silkie chickens are so friendly. They make great pets, but arent as good at holding their own in a flock of regulars. Thanks for separating them, and yes, i vote for getting a few more this spring
