A big part of having a song with outstanding vocals it's also having a producer who cares about stuff like this. The harmonies, the doubles, the fx chain, all of that matters. Sometimes it's not just about good singing.
Chester sounded amazing live and in all bands he's been in, so certainly the way his voice sounded is not due (only) to Shinoda, but Shinoda is a great songwriter and music producer, and he is the reason Linkin Park sounded so original and interesting.

I don't think that Mike and the rest of Linkin Park realize how much they are the mirror where a lot of musicians look, how much an influence they were and still are for modern rock and alternative music. Heck, they are the Beatles of the 21st century
Mike just dropped the individual stems for Already Over, including the vocals separated into harmony, main, etc. I bet you would get a kick out of analyzing those!!
@chrisliepe I'm so glad you covered this song. I've been learning music through producing for the last 20 years, but your videos and Mike Shinoda's solo work have been two of my biggest influences on my exploration of my singing voice and songwriting on my music in the last year. The way you explain things, break things down, feel comfortable playing with making weird deliveries to help figure out the voice without feeling shame or embarassment, plus seeing Mike's growth as an solo singer while having been such a great songwriter and producer all these years are just so helpful for me. I record covers that I never intend to get out there and I start them by using the same type of breakdown and analysis of the original track or multitrack, and try all sorts of vocal techniques and layering and it's just been wonderful. I did a cover of this song the day after it came out and for the first time I actually felt proud of my growth as a singer. I'm not a great singer, but I'm discovering how to use what I was given. Thank you so much Chris.
In Uni one of our assignments is to in a pair work on a song in the style of another artist, to replicate actually being in the industry and writing songs for people. Myself & my partner chose Mike Shinoda because I rap & we're both huge fans of his work. This video is going to be so useful in creating a true-er replication of solo style. You're spot on about how we hear him passively, I'd noticed that there was some sort of effect on his verse but just assumed it was a compressed double, but I'll never not notice the reverb now I know it's there.
I love when you break down stuff, it makes me appreciate it so much more, cause i put my oroducer ears on and then the song comes alive. Mike Shinoda is awesome as well. 🤘
Mike is one of the best writers rappers and producers there is. He and chester were just so in sync. And the fact the whole band had original members throughout just shows how great they all were.

I'm binging your reactions currently. I was recently looking through some old playlists and I found an old, live performance of Jonathan Davis & Amy Lee doing an incredible toned down version of Freak on a Leash!! Their voices are absolutely incredible together. Not sure if you do too many reactions on stuff that is older, but you should give it a listen!! It's a performance that gives me chills everytime I hear it. The grittyness of Jonathan's voice with the smooth, purity of Amy's is delicious 😅
Hey Chris, awesome video! I don't know if anyone has said this before, but your voice sounds a mix between Chester's and Sean Schemmel's who voices Goku in Dragon Ball Z/Super! The nuances in Already Over are great and the production of all LP's songs (and Mike's) have all these amazing intricacies that aren't always picked up straight away. I love their work and I appreciate your videos and wisdom 🙏
Have you ever listened to the song System from the Queen of Damned soundtrack at all? Jonathan Davis wrote the song but couldn't sing it for the soundtrack so he asked Chester to sing it for him. Jonathan Davis wrote the songs in the movie that the character Lestat song in the movie. His record label wouldn't let him record the songs with his voice for the soundtrack but they let him work on the movie.
Davis does have recorded vocals on that album and it wasnt because he "couldn't" sing it. The whole album has guest performances, he simply gave it to Chester because he thought it suited him best.
@@jamestillman5247 Jonathan's record contract said that he couldn't record for any other record label but Sony. The Queen of the Damned soundtrack was done on the Warner Brothers record label. All of the Singers he got to record his songs from the movie are all Warner Brothers records artists. Jonathan asked his label to sing on the soundtrack but his label said if he did then they were going to drop Korn from their label and they would also sue him for a breach of contract. The label let him put his voice in the movie but not the soundtrack. Jonathan recorded the songs a lot of years after the movie and soundtrack came out. He recorded the songs in I think 2013 about 11 years after his friends did originally. The soundtrack came out in 2002.
I wasn't looking for a Chester vocal, but the song did need just a little bit of grit on the vocals in places. Just some subtle placing here and there on parts of the Chorus. You felt it was building to a Chorus, then it just went a bit flat for me. The underlying music though, was enough to hold it together.
