I have seen quite a few similar comments over the years so I'm just going to pin my reply here. This is why the title of the video is not 'Tom Speaks 8 Languages' but 'Tom Speaking IN 8 Languages'. While speaking a language implies you can use that language to speak, speaking IN a language just means the act of speaking is done in that language at that moment.

i think he's a fluent listener/reader in spanish, like, he can easily understand it but it's hard to speak it yourself. Just like portuguese people can understand Spanish well but can't speak/write it and viceversa

I guess you could always say that living in Europe gives him advantage in speaking those other languages, but his Chinese! As a native Chinese myself, I've never heard any other westerners pronounce Chinese that good! Many study for years and their pronunciation might not get as good as Tom. He's just amazing!!!!
He said he was glad to visit China and “I love you”. His pronunciation was not native (obviously) but pretty good and easy to understand (at least for me, a native Chinese speaker).
Mandarin is my first language and his pronunciation is really not that great. Just understandable at best. It’s great that he makes an effort to at least greet people in their own language though.

Okay, so he speaks French and Spanish somewhat simply, knows a song in Italian, two phrases in German, can say "Thank you" in Russian, and he memorized a couple of phrases in Chinese and Korean. Knowing a word or a phrase in a language does not mean you speak the language. That said, he is clearly very intelligent and likes to learn things, and it's nice that he makes an effort to learn a phrase or two to accommodate his audience. Okay, so he speaks French and Spanish somewhat simply, knows a song in Italian, two phrases in German, can say "Thank you" in Russian, and he memorized a couple of phrases in Chinese and Korean. Knowing a word or a phrase in a language does not mean you speak the language. That said, he is clearly very intelligent and likes to learn things, and it's nice that he makes an effort to learn a phrase or two to accommodate his audience. It's just silly for people to say he speaks five or six languages, because: no.
