In the 50/60s, most country folk grew their own produce in Germany. I grew up eating seasonally. My mother preserved everything. If it didn’t come from our or my grandmother‘s garden, we didn’t eat it. It wasn’t until I had my own garden that I appreciated how much effort my parents put into feeding the family.
Did I catch a glimpse of grapes? Don't forget to use the vine leaves in a recipe for Dolma. I know Dan is Vegetarian so you can make a filling without meat. Blanche the vine leaves then cool. Mix rice grains, onion, tomato, mint, olive oil, seasoning and fill the vine leaves, rolling and wrapping them into an oblong shape. Layer into a pot, cover with water and lid, and boil till rice is cooked. Goes nicely with plain Yoghurt. 🥰
I do love your stuff, amazing how quickly you've reached a point where you can wander around a pick a whole dinner. In a way I'm glad the house was delayed allowing you to focus on garden
You two make me laugh... My best time of the week.. Very natural and the bantering is applausable! Cause it's the truth! Been a gardener for my whole life I don't understand the word hunger... Now pensioned I still have tomatoes, peas, beans, spinach potatoes, onions a few like 2 basics in 5, 50x60cm wooden bin sufficient to provide for 1 and Neighbour. Gardening is the best therapy! Keep going both of you and all extras given away brings in abundance of more to come. S. A.
Garden looking good. Not a bad haul of potatoes. We learn every time we do something. I’m finding keeping a notebook helps me remember what I want to do differently next season.
New spuds with hot butter, yummy. It feels great when you harvest your own food, we love it. Be over for some chips in a bit, I will have gravy on mine please. 😅
I remember you both wondering if the no-dig potatoes would grow well enough. Your harvest looks good.. I am just about to pull my own, they went in after yours. The wood chips are finely chopped, which should keep the moisture in, plus allow air flow. Cabbage is much larger than mine, but I am restricted to planting in containers so I grew much smaller cabbage. Your savings on food must be good this year, and getting better for years to come. Well done 👍.
One thing I vividly remember is the wonderful food that my Auntie used to make in that little kitchen , and the roasted potatoes were the best, maybe the both of you will be blessed and make the same awesome roasted potatoes like she did. Around Noon she would ring the bell , we all new it was Brunch Time, and we would all pile in the tiny dinning room and just "pig out" because we knew the last meal of the day would not be until sundown, those were the good old days of my childhood,
Congratulations on 25K Subscribers!!🎉 I am so happy for you both. I know it’s not easy being YT creators. We really really enjoy and learn a lot from your channel. Great job! Thank you for sharing with us 👍🏻🤘🏻
Thank you so much. You’re right about the video creation. It’s a lot of work for sure. It does motivate us when you and others watching write such lovely comments and come up with all sorts of ideas and tips. Plus, I really enjoy making them. Thank you 😊
I'm absolutely loving watching your series, only thing I beg to see the meals you can make from your produce. My mouths watering as you're picking the veg haha
Can you imagine saying "Please strim the onions"? Hah, hah. My favorite thing this time was the glimpse of the baby pomegranates! Please show us you opening one when they are ready. By the way, I am at the opposite end of Japan to Hokkaido, and we also have great squash. (I call them 'pumpkins' though.) Each area has their own famous squash varieties, and often they are priced at a premium.
Y'all need a riding lawn mower, your property gets better and more beautiful with every video you share. ❤❤❤❤ Just lovely. Ty for sharing, oh you also need a wagon to pull behind the rider...that's ALOT of work...
Even in a no dig bed, you should dig up your potatoes after you've gathered what is on the surface. There may well be potatoes that have grown down. That's what they are supposed to do you know. And you do not want to leave them in the ground to rot because that will attract disease and insects detrimental to potatoes. Next season add your straw multiple times through the season. It can be MUCH deeper to improve yield. The deeper the straw the higher they grow 😊
All I could think about was the small potatoes and dill after you showed it. Yum! If you two are ever thinking about adopting an adult Canadian please keep me in mind. 😂The garden is looking fantastic! Well done!
I so admire Dan’s dedication to the grass cutting. But please buy a mower! That’s way to much grass to use a weed eater on! --bless your heart! Alabama, USA
You can actually leave the potatoes in the ground, until you need them. They keep swelling to get bigger - even when the upper foliage is wilting. Potatoes do like water. The debate between no dig and traditional growing methods is perhaps a distraction - because the key in both cases is good soil and lots of water. Give each plant some space, and they will give a better crop. The only reason to dig them up early, is where you want to plant an autumn crop of something else.
Please take be careful with the fennel flower they propagate very very much take them straight away after the flower are finished do not worry about the one you have know they come back very strong next year. But the seeds from this year will invade your garden and it’s very hard to control after! I did have the same problem ! Good luck like your videos xx
We eat the little ones and not so perfect spuds first. The big ones are dried off for a day or two, put in a sack and stored in a cool dark space. They must not be washed. 👍
My advice is that you stop jumping down from one terrace to a lower one because that is how many ankle injuries are caused. Either slide down as you did on one accasion and/or build some steps and use them.

I was born in the mid ‘60’s and if it didn’t grow locally it wasn’t in the grocery store. Now the ship food from all over the world. Food items grown at home taste the best! I will not buy food out of season. It’s not good for our health, farmers, or the Earth.
As you are heading towards renovation I thought you might find this of interest. The couple are also in Portugal. ruclips.net/video/V2PrjhDfsfE/видео.html

Those were the days 😊
I am amazed by what you have accomplished! Such hard work. I noticed the no dig potatoes are not very dirty….another bonus!
Thank you 😊
Digging potatoes, wonderful, like digging for gold and just as addictive 😊
The best 😊

We looked at our meal the other evening and said ‘everything from the garden’. It’s a lovely feeling.

Weather looks great and you are having a great time. Your hard work is paying off in spades. Lovely viewing.
Thank you 😊
Picture the scene when the fruit is ripe, wander the garden picking and eating with a glass of grape juice, lovely.
I’m picturing it. 😊
Chips for tea tonight! Gratin tomorrow! Potato pancakes next, and so on! You've reminded me I need to plant potatoes in the next few weeks!
Potatoes with everything 👍😊

I am amazed by what the two of you produce in your gardens. And I’m so excited you will get to start on your house soon.
Exciting times 😊

We hardly buy any fruit or vegetables now. Carrots, the odd avocado and bananas.

As soon as we get an oven we’ll be making roast potatoes. Now we only have them when we fire up the bread oven. 😊

There are four pomegranates now. We’re really hoping they’ll hang on to maturity. And yes, we’ll cut one on camera when it’s time. 😊
Its beautiful out there

World hunger? I don't see the problem 😅❤. You're setting a good solution for it.❤❤
We are blessed to have our own land. 👍
I enjoyed the video! My potatoes are just flowering now! My dill looks at about the same stage! Enjoy!
Wonderful. All the best with your harvest. 😊

Merci. 👍
Nice haul! Will definitely have to give the no dig method a try.

You seem to have a good bunch of “Taties “ there. No risk of another great Irish (Portuguese) potato famine this year!
A lot better than last year. 😊👍

Thank you. The flowers we showed were dill, not fennel. They look very similar. 😊👍
The good thing about small potatoes is that you just have to wash them and not bother about peeling.
Exactly. And you can have some cold the next day. 👍😊
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
Hi, great potato harvest. How do you keep them, so they last?
We eat the little ones and not so perfect spuds first. The big ones are dried off for a day or two, put in a sack and stored in a cool dark space. They must not be washed. 👍
Love your podcast. You need a walk behind bush hog.
Thank you 😊
You must be pleased with that spud haul? What does Dan think about during the hours of strimming?? X
He says he thinks about what new spaces we could create 😂
Where on earth do you get all your energy from. Is it all the fresh veggies you eat
I guess so 😂
Don’t you use a garden fork for those spuds. 😅 They look gorgeous…yum
We don’t need a fork as they’re easy to lift and we run less chance of spiking the spuds 😊

No, but we swap some for things we don’t have. 👍
It's a shame that you guys are no familiar with Frankie off Grid! A wonderful couple who is doing much the same as you!
We have met and swapped seeds but they live a long way away.
What about grapes, which you have planted last year.
They are growing 😊

We haven’t got a lawn. 😊
Are you wanting to sack Dan, over Oniongate?
I was thinking about it, but you know, he’s a right and handy at times 😉
How much on average does it cost for your truck of wood chip.
We make wood chip but what we buy is pine bark. It costs between 20 and 23 euros a truck load.
