Thank you, Gary! This video helped so much. I just started noticing the eggs on my Lakota squash plant and have killed two squash bugs, so far. Just came in tonight from dusting the plant and will be washing it off, in the morning.

I'm not the most squeamish person, but I do find squash bugs so gross. I couldn't crush them with my fingers. Should I dust the bugs directly, or is there something I can spray directly on them? I use silicone tipped tongs to pull tomato horn worms off tomato stems, then drop them in a cup of soapy water. Can't use tongs on squash bugs. I once saw a bird trying to wrestle a horn worm off of a stem. One of those rare nature moments. I even saw a hornworm with wasp larvae all over it. I had to try hard not to pass out while taking a picture. It was the worst hornworm infestation I'd ever had, by far. Is it my imagination, or is pest pressure a lot worse than it used to be? When people who don't garden shop for veggies, they sure aren't thinking squash bugs and hornworms and all the rest of it!
I dust but find they often survive. So as mention below grab them and drop them in soapy water. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. Gary, I’m in northern VA, not far from you. I have found an excellent resource in the Virginia Tech Pest Management Guide. They recommend using Kaolin clay, for vine borers and squash bugs. You can use it as a dust and as a foliage spray. And, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Kaolin also cools plants down! The clay is recommended as the brand Surround WP. Hope this is helpful

This close-up view of exactly where to put the dust, and then saturating the area the next morning, is extremely helpful. Last time I tried to grow yellow squash and zucchini, almost all of the fruit turned to mush on one end long before they were mature. Is that blossom end rot? What might the cause have been? Would the bugs have had anything to do with that? It was the first time this happened to my squash and zucchini plants. Thanks Gary, for all the info and the great way you show us what you're explaining. Good health and happiness to you and yours, always!
@Ke Le that sounds like what happened to my squash. I was told it was because the female flower didn't get pollinated. I don't know if that's not the case then the vine borer will bore a hole in the vine killing the plant. Or, some kind of worm bores a hole and eats out the inside of the squash. I'm in the insect capital of the world it seems. (Florida) Spider mites, flea beetles, aphids, squash bugs, pickle worm, you name it we have it in my garden. 😟🙁🙁🙁🙁
@@shirleyk623 I don't know if I could deal with gardening in FL. I'd have to have a huge green house or high tunnel with raised beds. Heck, I wish I had that here in NJ. I don't know how much that would help. Pickle worm. Good Lord, never even heard of that. I'm going to look it up out of curiosity.
@@kele1264 Truth be known, I grow a lot of butterfly food for the caterpillars and the butterflies. I cannot use a lot of pesticides for fear of killing the good bugs. I plan on relocating all the caterpillar food out of my garden to various other locations in my yard. Then I'll feel better about spraying or using the dusts. I have them all I just don't want to use them unless absolutely necessary. It's a bit discouraging but I keep on trying. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
@@shirleyk623 I truly don't want to harm good bugs. But I also want my veggies to grow. The swallowtail caterpillars destroyed my parsley practically over night. Grasshoppers destroyed my small hot pepper plants. Don't get me started on tomato hornworms. It feels like a massive never ending attack from the insect world.
@@kele1264 Amen to the insect attack. Doesn't it just drive you crazy? I have gotten a few things from the garden. Some jalapenos for poppers, green beans, strawberries And shisito peppers are very productive and tasty. I grow parsley and fennel for the swallowtail caterpillar, yes they can devour some parsley for sure. I have an outdoor cage that I raise them in. I grow those two things just for them. I don't trust the nurseries around here, to buy the plants they are sometimes sprayed with chemicals to kill caterpillars. Those plants are easy to grow. I hope you are able to get rid of your insects and have a great harvest 🦋🦋🦋🐛🐛🐛
I just picked a bunch of Vine borer eggs off of my squash. I absolutely hate these things. I just want some good squash. They killed all my plants this year before I could get any 😢. This is my last chance with these plans and they are getting bigger now. I might try the BT and syringe method next year
Thank you - this is most helpful! I also have an invasion of spotted lantern fly nymphs. Please let me know if you know of a best way to get rid of them. Thank you!

Hi Gary! I have learned so much from you. Thank you! My question is-my squash are growing their small fruit. The flowers on the end of the fruit are not opening at all so they can be fertilized. What is the proper length of time to wait for them to open? Should I go ahead and open them and hand pollinate? Thank you!!

Yes it's gross to have to squish them. I've always been squeamish about that but this season being my third one, I find that I'm less so. Maybe it's because I'm beginning to realize that's what I need to do to keep them under control. So thick gloves on and hunting here I go! Lol Question though. I find that there are less bees visiting my yard this year than previously. I'm not sure why. Have you notice any difference in pollinator population in your garden?

Very informative and helpful. This may be a dumb question, but are there any very common garden pests we shouldn't touch because they will sting, etc? My grandparents always spoke of a "blister bug" and I don't remember much about them except they looked similar to a lightning bug (firefly) without the ability to glow. I always assumed they would cause blisters if you got a secretion on you or something. I am growing a spacemaster bush cucumber and saw a fuzzy caterpillar-like something on it the other day. I almost touched it thinking it was a cucumber because it looked so much like a little one and then I drew back because it almost resembled what we call in the south a "packsaddle." Now, I have never been stung by one of those, but I hear they pack a punch and I'd rather not find out first hand. Just wondering.

Help! I have tried all the tricks with my squash and zucchini. I've increased water to once in the early a.m. and late in p.m. Used worm tea and compost. Used fish emulsion. Hand pollinated. Every time I think I have a good one growing they get soft and/or shrivel with sometimes having rot at the end. The only thing I can think is that I am using city tap water or not the appropriate container? Should I scrap these and just grow more tomatoes? I live in an apartment with a balcony.

Do you have a problem with your squash & zucchini getting powdery mildew when you are spraying water on the plants to wash off the insect dust? My squash & zucchini seem to get powdery mildew every time the leaves get wet from watering.
I just had a pull bug problem. I did diamotaceous earth and squishing. Then sluggo plus. I still saw them the day after DE. Some were even crawling around with it in them. I wonder how long it takes to kill them.

Will DE work for this purpose? The squash bugs are horrible! Also, I keep hearing that BT needs to be sprayed on the underside and top of leaves. But if the caterpillars and worms eat through the leaf, what difference does that make? It is a serious question, but something I don't understand.
A little bit but not as effective as insect dusts. I've had good luck with BT, but you have to spray every 3 to 5 days and try to stay ahead of the hatch cycle. It can get pricey if you have a lot of plants.
I have never tried. It would be soft neck type. You could try in a shader area but generally speaking it is harvesting time. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. Save it till this September and plant it then. I have done this 2 years now and I love growing garlic. By planting in September, you never have to worry about weeding or bugs. I never have to water them because they don’t dry out. I do carrots and onions also. I have mine in big grow bags and they stay pretty dormant until February and March, (in Maryland), and as soon as we get past the frost, they take off for the sky. I’m getting ready to harvest mine in a week or two and will save some for planting this September. You can also get garlic at the grocery store ( I get organic), and plant it, although I would say that if Gary has it, order it from him. Good luck!👍🏻🍀
Thanks Gary.I realized i had been planting the hard neck all this while and as soon as the sun starts scotching it burns the leaves, terribly.I tried a shadier place this time round.Keeping my fingers crossed.
I just planted them today to experiment.I once planted mine in October for a Spring harvest but unfortunately,at Spring it was all rotten up.I will try again this Fall and we would see how it goes.Fingers crossed. Thanks
I find that either a high raised bed with good drainage or a grow bag works really well. I learned all this from Gary. Been following him for 3 years and he is in Maryland so zone 7 is right up his alley. Check his videos on using hydrogen peroxide and Neem oil 👍🏻

There's some yellow beetles that I see more than squash bugs now. They're slightly bigger than ladybugs (and look similar), I've seen the the last couple of years. How do you handle those? I've just had to squish them as I've seen them, but they're all over the place now.

The bugs are so bad this year, spider mites have literally ruined every one of my tomato plants. I've had to literally wash off every single leaf of my tomato and eggplants. The pickle worm are destroying the cukes and squash. I've had to bag my fruits with those small individual grow bags, even the peppers are having holes bored into them. It's a disaster this year. The Neem oil and peppermint oil that I got isn't working either. I'm feeling defeated for sure. I hope the fall gardens aren't as challenging. I've even planted herbs and flowers in my raised beds to disguise the plants. The bugs have figured out that trick, lol.
Sorry to hear that. I cannot imagine dealing with what you mentioned. I had an aphid suck the life out of a determinate tomato branch and I was feeling upset lol. Keep pressing on!
@@propheticwarriorThank for the shoulder to cry on lol. You can give me aphids any day. You just wash them off with some mild soapy water or it they're not to bad wait until the lady beetles arrive.

Hi Gary,
Big fan. I'm in zone 6B. Have you ever tried diatomaceous earth? Food grade.
following
I have. It works but it can be slow. It grinds beetle joints down due to the sharp silica. However, I have found it doesnt do much for squash bugs. Squishing and removing eggs is what works. Even with any dust, I still find them alive.

My question is-my squash are growing their small fruit. The flowers on the end of the fruit are not opening at all so they can be fertilized. What is the proper length of time to wait for them to open? Should I go ahead and open them and hand pollinate? Thank you!!
I dont know how long to wait but I would just let them do their thing. You need the right timing of opening male and female flowers for it to work.

Some people get rattlesnakes. JK. I dont get any in my garden that are pests. So I am not sure. It might be more garden zone specific.

DE is sharp silica not a poison like Sevin and Spinosad. So it can take a long time and sometimes doesnt work.

A little bit but not as effective as insect dusts. The goal is to manage down damage so you always get some but you can also get great production

I just replaced all my peppers. Never seen any pests. The leaves didnt change colors but growing more or less stopped all together and the leaves curled up, got really hard and fell off. Not sure what that was about.
Good call on replacing. Sometimes you just dont know.

I can't believe you kill them by hand!! They stink SO bad, don't want that on me!!! 😂 They are so quick at escaping, too, plus they fly!!. I wear gloves and throw them in a bucket of soapy water.
Oddly I like the sent but then again, I like the smell of fish emulsion.

I crush, throw, spray fingers with hose, since my hose is in continuous mode these days....thought I'd read that their odor attracts other squash bugs, but that may be a myth....
That would scare me to just grab that bug 😫 lol maybe with gloves on 😊 I'm new with gardening , I'm sure I'll get over It, but baby steps ✌🏼

Wouldn't you be putting new squash plants in danger of infestation if you plant them in the same place as old plants ?
Not really. They show up everywhere. Its not the soil. You can certainly put them elsewhere and but they eventually show up.

My best tactic for squash is to buy it at the Farmers Market! It just wasn't worth dealing with the squash bugs and the vine borers.
Am yet to sow a seed this year, am thinking of sowing some in July and see what happens
Thats an approach and grow other stuff for sure
