Love Hornby Dublo. 🥰. I bought a 2-rail HD 8f on eBay a few years ago. It arrived in France from Glasgow where it had lived in its box in the loft since the late 1960's. I put it on the track... ...and away it went without hesitation. I'm not convinced that current production models will still be functional in 50+ years...
If you are not aware already, there are two small balls sitting in the motor end bearings (one in each). The ends of the motor shaft sits against these as a thrust bearing and it is important to allow some play of the shaft. Adjustment is done by turning the brass slotted screw at the cab end of the motor. This screw has a brass locking nut which needs to be pinched up once the adjustment is made, thus securing the adjustment. Too little play and the motor will have trouble rotating. Too much play and the motor armature will move back and forth, depending on loco direction and potentially cause a foul with the body of the motor and/or brush misalignment etc.
Did you put a wrenn bogie and tender base on it as I seem to remember HD had only plastic/ delrin pony and tender wheels! As did all the first wrenns! This was said once as the finest model locomotive ever made? It certainly ran like a dream !
@oobill It is a strange twist, but wrenn locomotives are the desired ones now with their values exceeding dublo in many cases! Sadly it's now becoming very difficult to obtain some of the needed spares as the interest in these old die-cast models seems to be coming to an end? I have tried in vein to obtain brushes for the half-inch motor, and even the long arm class 20 type seem to have dried up ! I have heard you can use the common triang x67 brushes but I've yet to try that!
If you dismantle the motor you will lose magnetism. Alnico magnets lose their strength anyway over time. So get hold of Ronald Dodd's remagnetiser. It's brilliant.
Purrs like a kitten. I'm not brave enough to field strip mine. I'll get the wheels all cleaned up. Maybe I'll remove the cab from the chassis and see if there is any cleaning to do.
Was that originaly 3 rail? I inherited my dads dublo Duchess of Montrose and a black tank engine plus all the three rail track in the 1980's, he had the Duchess converted to two rail for me by a local model shop and built me a layout. Was all put away in 1985 and hasnt left my folks loft since we moved house and had no room for a layout. When lockdown is over I've told him I'm going to fetch it out of the loft and bring it home - though space is still an issue.

My father sent it to Wrenn to be re-wheeled back in the 1970s so it would run on the new Hornby track and have a tension lock coupling.

get the motor remagitised, as if the magnet is weak, the motor will run hot causing the armature to fail, I recommend scalespeed.
The magnet is fine. So is the motor.

Yeah i also prefer the old models ( also because its cheaper) but i have some newer Hornby models but im getting a lot of older models now
