This is a very inspiring video. I think I may go at a small undertaking like this at my uncle's farm, which is struggling of course. I have grown shitake's from a starter log kit and wondered if something like this would be feasable. You have inspired me to get farming!
thankyou 4 inspiration. RUclips has given way for videos that will inspire the survivors of the next generation. Thank you 4 this video. I hope it will inspire people that think they can only survive on food stamps, or church hand out's.
I like to make a soup from Shiitake, Enoki and Oyster mushrooms. It's so good... if you want you can add some white truffle oil at the end but it's really not necessary because they already have such a rich earthy/nutty taste.
Nice to see this sort of venture, creativity, and enthusiasm. Pretty neat. I will always buy US-grown shiitake rather than ones from China. Nothing against Chinese people but I can't trust products from China. On principle I want to buy local and eat fresh mushrooms rather than dried ones anyway. Nice work.
its not very often i am surprized but this video really caused me to say wow I need to ask - have you looked at the site called Gregs Mushroom Grower look for it on google
Guinea fowl are excellent for pest control, and they don't scratch up the place and make mud pits. Also I use hydrated lime to control slugs..spread directly on ground...plus mushrooms like the PH
There are a few ideas to try pick the best variety - there are lots available. grow them in the right conditions - some such as oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and can be put outside (I discovered these and the reasons they work on Gregs Mushroom Grower site )
Hi there thank you for the video, you would get better result with the ducks eating slugs they love them. You said the logs last 8 to 9 years that is great I have a log that is 4 years old it has flushed 4 times this year.
Sir there are a lots poisinious wood tree too. so partuculairly what kinds of trees logs is good for shiitake mushrooms. I am from Nepal and i live in the altitude of 1000 Mt. what types of tree logs can i use for the cultivation of shiitake?
Damn guys, that's to much work with all those holes. Try shaving about one 10th off a single side of each log, place one flat on the ground with the shaved face facing upward, place your inoculated / colonized medium on the top and sandwich it using the other stump. Can be done vertically too although obviously something is required to keep them tied together. Alternatively keep them flat until properly colonized and then place them vertically. So much simpler and yields might even increase.
+Stefan Bachrodt The lifespan of the fruit production might decresae though, I don't thinking making holes is hard at all given you have the proper drill bit and drill for the job. Might be an idea worth trying though
We have lots of poplar. I wonder if I can grow mushrooms on them? As for slugs. Beer is an expensive way . They go for the yeast. put a teaspoon of yeast in a jar of sugar water and let foam. Ducks are great for slug control. Also ,under cover, dogfood mixed with crushed barley bran. You have to pick them off and best drop them into hot water.
Aftergloh With. You don't take the plugs out once you pound them in and wax over them. Plus keep the logs off the ground always. Competing fungus contamination could result from ground contact. Good Luck
Hello American colleagues! I solved the problem with slugs, as the field is leveled, making sand, and network Agretela top gravel. Otherwise, the mushrooms will be damaged to 50%. Ice melting in the bath for 24 hours rank places. Success !
How do we know that the mushrooms there are edible or poisonous or not.... Is there a way to detect poisons in mushrooms and to neutralize the poisons, if any....?..
Teh Csiamg they know because they were the ones that planted the spores and mycelium of the shiitake mushrooms in the logs. They only grow shiitake. They don’t harvest anything that isn’t Shiitake even if something else did grow on it the log. They know what the shiitake looks like and no. There is no method of removing poisons from a poisonous mushroom. The only way to eat a poisonous mushroom and not get sick or die is to not eat it in the first place. But yeah, they don’t guess and hope that what grows is shiitake. They plant the mushroom mycelium themselves. It’s the same way farmers don’t clear a plot of land and hope the whole thing will fill with crops. They plant it themselves. That’s how they know it’s safe.
If you have a rain, could be over night, could take a week. To many things factor in to say exactly. Im sure you could find the average for your climate.
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else wants to uncover how do i grow mushrooms try Vaxicorn Mushroom Maker Guide ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my co-worker got great success with it.
man, i wish i were a farmer. i lived in the city my whole life and i feel disconnected with true life. honestly i am even afraid to try becuase i might fail. city brain of mine:(
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else needs to find out about grow mushrooms at home try Vaxicorn Mushroom Maker Guide (do a google search)? I've heard some amazing things about it and my mate got cool success with it.
2.5 pounds over the life of a log; each log lasts 8-9 years. That's $3.9/log/year. He's inoculated a total of 1150 logs over 2 years. That's $4,485/year gross...that IS child labor even in volume.
This was great, thanks, I have been researching "mushroom process" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Heenyan Mushroom Organifiction - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
Not if he has 400 one year 500 the next year, he has say two thousand in a few years. Hard work never killed anyone. Beats alot of jobs. 2,000 logs x 2.5 lbs per log x $11.00 per lb =$55,000 per year. In ten dollar bills.

This was really interesting. Thanks for showing this. I always wondered why Shiitakes cost more than most others.

Your chicken, "Squacked" at exactly the moments I needed to hear your comments...way too funny!

Oh yes ... got me daydreaming!!! Love this! Thanks for sharing.
thank you for the info. Can you continue to use the logs year after year without re inoculating?
Thank you for all the useful info!
Awesome, can't wait to get them started!
Spread crashed egg shells
to eliminate slugs completely.
Worked in Vancouver B.C.
its not very often i am surprized but this video really caused me to say wow I need to ask - have you looked at the site called Gregs Mushroom Grower look for it on google
They keep producing for several years. To get the to fruit you soak them with water. You can get up to 5 yeras of good production from some logs
Guinea fowl are excellent for pest control, and they don't scratch up the place and make mud pits. Also I use hydrated lime to control slugs..spread directly on ground...plus mushrooms like the PH
Put out beer in shallow cups to kill slugs. Works great!
+Capt. Kevin Pruett It really does work. +1

Polar is a hardwood! You can grow Shiitake on them
Vielen Dank
once you get the plugs, how much time do you have to put into a log-- before they go bad??
When Forcing the Growth, are you soaking the logs w the plugs in them or without?
Aftergloh

Can you use elm ? and how often do you soak your logs ?
Can you re-use the logs, or do they just keep producing until complete they decompose?
How can I learn more about the details of this process at home for my own use? Or is it a trade secret? I curious.
where do you buy the sawdust.
if u pick the mushrooms, how long is it before the next crop of mushrooms will be ready to pick. not everyone knows what CSA is?
Community-supported agriculture = CSA, Means you work on the farm for a modest share of the harvest.
What you doing for them in frost season
thank you very informative and inspiration even if i only do an few logs
Hi Bernie.
Are you using hard or soft maple logs?
Thx.
How long does a log last?
I have a slug problem, they come in my rented flat everywhere,

Hello, can the logs stay out winter season? i live i Norway
Yes, but your harvest season will be shorter, but your logs will have a longer grow life, as they dont produce as much.
Where can one purchase those plugs to plant in the log?
Just google for it.....
Like: www.google.nl/search?q=Shiitake+Plug+Spawn+us
Could you pick them straight from the log, wash them, and eat them raw?
it would be best to at least cook them (yes i know 7yr old comment)
Ducks will go after the slugs like crazy.
Good job
ducks love slugs. not sure if chickens do though.
abbshurz they eat them, but only if they are really hungry.

@arlingtonguy54 My chickens love slugs. Maybe you should feed your less corn so they want to scratch around.
Im hoping he meant 2.5 pounds per season.
Do I buy woods? I do. Do I buy mycelium? I do. For carbons to make batteries with.
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else needs to find out about grow mushrooms at home try Vaxicorn Mushroom Maker Guide (do a google search)? I've heard some amazing things about it and my mate got cool success with it.
how about some psilocybin average 40 dollars an eighth

He said he gets $14/lb for the mushrooms. I pay a little more for dried shiitake. I doubt that he can still get $14/lb for fresh shiitake.
ducks love slugs.
Chickens won't eat the slugs. You'll need ducks for that.
Need to tell your chickens to be quite
