      Thank you very much! There's always new techniques and tricks to learn in 3dsmax. I'm always finding new strategies and different workflows with the software. I'll have some new videos coming very soon.

      I´ll be in total alert waiting for those new videos. So far, i keep practicing watching your tutorials over and over again. Thanks again. Question: If someone wants to focus on just jewelry modeling, do you think one should considering using Rhino Gold instead of other 3D softwares ?

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  7 лет назад +3

      It depends on if you are serious about breaking into the jewelry design industry as a professional jeweler or designer. Most designers in the industry are also jewelers themselves and professional jewelers use Rhino and some other specialized CAD software for their designs and prototyping, which eventually make it directly to fabrication. So in this case, you're much better off working primarily with CAD software like Rhino, Matrix, JewelCAD or 3Design. These applications are the industry standard. However, you can do pre-viz designs in any software you like, including some 2D drawing packages. 3dsmax is nice to use for creating very quick pre-viz designs that you later rebuild in CAD, because design process is much faster using the polygonal tools in 3dsmax.

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  7 лет назад +3

      In addition to what I mentioned in my last response, I should point out that if you are thinking about doing jewelry for 3d printing, then 3dsmax will be excellent for that. I have a Shapeways store where I sell jewelry and other 3d printed items, all of which are modeled in 3dsmax. However, machined and fabricated pieces which hold diamonds and other precious stones need to be modeled to precision in a CAD software because the fabrication process is much more involved.

    • @luisgarza3375
      @luisgarza3375 7 лет назад

      Thanks John for all the info. Really appreciate it. Actually I´ve just sent you a message asking you just what you´ve said in your response. In the jewelry I work for they want someone who can model in 3D let say a ring, then get this model printed in a 3D pico printer, and then take the end result to the shop so the jeweler works on it.Of course the piece will have diamonds and precious stones. So, as I understand according to your response I better consider using a CAD software than 3ds max, right?

    just superb modeling tutorials! i'm wondering how you identify the most primitive object you start with (heidra in this case) - meaning, how to know which is the most 'correct' one in regards to the shape you are after... Hope you understand my question:) keep it up, can't wait to see more!

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  9 лет назад +1

      unready56 Sorry for the late reply. Typically, I just experiment with a lot of different combinations of objects and techniques, until I find something aesthetic I like. Then, I'll usually search for a way to optimize the workflow, if possible. I usually begin experimenting with either a cube, a torus knot, or the hydra primitive in Max; as these are by far the best starting points for any complex shape.

      +Salty Almond Digital design in a nutshell is a basic knowledge of graphic design + 3d modeling, animation, special effects, particle effects, character modeling and rigging, level design, texture/pattern design. Of course most of this also involves rendering of some sort and in digital design you learn about how to render properly. this is including but not limited to: lighting, proper image settings for rendering, how to render in multiple passes for post production tweaking, photoshopping, etc.

    Just recently came upon your tutorials. Absolutely excellent teachings as is evidenced by everyone's grateful and positive comments.
    I find it completely fascinating that no one was annoyed by you having the dryer going in the background with objects hitting off the drum thus making distracting sounds. Apparently I was the only one bothered by it...so much so that I had to comment. However...........just great work....thank you!!!!
    Just curious if you had the end result in mind prior to creating the means of getting there or was this form the outcome of your experimenting/playing with 3dsmax tools and procedures?
    Will be looking forward to more of your tutorials...hopefully the laundry will be done by then...(just kidding).

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  9 лет назад

      +Ron H Hi, Ron. To answer your question, sometimes I do have a preconceived objective to the objects I create, and set out to find the best route or procedure to achieving them. Typically, this process would begin by attempting to "backwards engineer" a particular shape, beginning with it's most simple form, then expanding on it in some way. In other cases, the objects were simply creations of my imagination, and experimentation. Indeed, some shapes were literally "discovered" after hours of playing around with various techniques and modifiers, and seeing what worked best with what. Once in a while, I stumble on a very interesting shape, and decide to optimize the procedure I used to create it. Often times, there's a much easier and faster way to do something than what I had initially thought. I really appreciate your comment, and hope you continue to enjoy the tutorials I will release in the near future. I'm constantly searching for techniques and strategies which can be useful in producing complex, aesthetically pleasing models; often of the mathematical variety. Hope to hear from you again! I promise to do the laundry first next time. ;)

I would suggest maybe trying Iray also. It's very easy, and powerful. The realism and speed which can be achieved in Iray is very impressive.

    I follow a lot of your tutorials. Really great ones... Could you pls tel me how you select the polygons in a loop...??? Is it by shift selecting the second polygon? i was following your voronoi style bracelet, was not able to select in loop... You had first selected four polygons and then selected in a loop.. How did you do that?

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  9 лет назад

      Joel Chacko Thank you very much. Yes, in 3dsmax 2010 to 2015, you could select one polygon, then hold down Shift on keyboard, then select another face along the same loop, in the direction you wish to go. This will automatically select the entire face loop. In 2015 and higher, you can simply double-click a face to get the face loop selection. In the other tutorial, I selected four faces, then simply used the Loop hotkey to select the loops based on those first four polygons. You could use the "Loop" button in Graphite or Edit Poly modifier to do the same.

      Thank you. Most of the designs are found from experimentation with the tools, and my personal attempts to discover interesting shapes based in mathematics or established geometry. Most of the objects were heavily inspired by minimal surfaces and sacred geometry. Symmetry is probably the most important element.

      Ko Jak When using the combined manipulator, be sure you are in the local axes. I haven't used Maya in quite some time, so you may need to refer to the manual regarding transformation of polygon components to get accurate information on this. If you know someone proficient in polygonal modeling in Maya, feel free to refer to this tutorial, and see if they can help you out. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance when it comes to the Maya workflow yet.

    I'm studying to become a game designer how did you learn to 3d Max work like this

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  9 лет назад +1

      leann237 Hi, leann. I started modeling about 10 years ago, in some free, open-source 3d software. I spent years practicing, and doing various tutorials, like those I am creating now. When I began using 3dsmax, I already had some understanding of the fundamentals of polygon modeling. However, I still absorbed as much information as I could about the software; including reading the manual, doing lots of free tutorials, and asking questions in the forums. Basically, i just became a student of the software for a long time, and practiced by modeling at least one thing every single day in the software, until I finally felt confident that I could model almost anything. Give yourself time, and never give up your dream. 3dsmax is a powerful, and complicated package, but if you stick with it, you'll begin to understand all the tools, and know when and where to use them in your own works. Good luck!

      Thank you. Are you familiar with mathematical term homotopy and deformations retract? It transforms one path(curve) to another. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mug_and_Torus_morph.gif
      For example, can this pendant be transformed into another object simillary?

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  9 лет назад

      ***** Well, I'm not familiar with that term, but I am familiar with shape morphing, and morphological transformations, which seem very much the same thing. I'm sure it's possible to transform my object into another one, so long as both objects contain exactly the same number of vertices. There are specialized plugins, like cgpress.org/archives/morphit_beta___3d_warpmorph_tool_released.html, which could do the work of transforming the two objects, but again, they need to contain the exact same number of verts, and possibly some other equal parameters, for the morph to work correctly.

      Are you following along in 3dsmax? If so, you should be able to select just one face, then hold Shift, and select a second face in the same "loop", and 3dsmax will automatically select the entire face loop for you. Later versions of Max allow you to simply double-click on a face, and the entire loop will be selected the same way. Let me know if this helps.

    wish i could model conventionally like this, i tend to spend hours modeling and tweaking to get a desired shape, yet you've just gone random object, delete some faces, connect, squish, done. or was you just messing about with hydra randomly to get something that looked cool, and just took note of the random work-flow

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  7 лет назад +2

      Sometimes I begin with an idea of a mathematically based shape, and then think of how it could be created with polygons. There is a lot of experimentation, trial and error, and toying about with the modifiers and tools to see what's possible. Once I find a shape I like, then it's a matter of thinking about the technique and trying to find a way to achieve the same shape more efficiently. Of course there are times when I think I have the most efficient route to achieve an object only to see a comment that something could have been done much easier another way. So there's always a few different alternative ways to do something.

      Well keep going John, it seems like you have not much left to learn in terms of efficiency but one could say that's a bit too naive, as the world of modelling is forever growing.

      I'm still learning new things every day and truly believe that there's no end to the learning process for any artist. As technology evolves, so does the world of 3d modeling and so must we, as students to the craft.

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  7 лет назад

      I apologize for missing this comment the first time. Georgi Barzinski is correct for the most part. Most of the designs are inspired by shapes found in algebraic areas of geometric mathematics. Some are just from experimenting with tools, but many are actually based on a mathematical equation. However, the purpose of the videos is to expand on the basic shapes and create them without any formal knowledge of formula or complex equations. I hope these videos show people that the beauty of math need not be reserved for the gifted or elite. There are many roads to achieving a result, and one just needs some basic knowledge of their tools a little bit of creativity.

      +Medina Cevapovic Hi. I'll be happy to help if I can. What shape do you have in mind?

    • @earlysunsetzg
      @earlysunsetzg 8 лет назад

      So happy you replied :D something like this
      www.bonewithattitude.net.nz/image/cache/catalog/IMG_4304-500x500.JPG
      But the floor plan of the entire object should be shaped like a leaf- I'm having trouble with the holes and these extruded parts on top of the structure. I made the model in autocad and imported it to 3ds max but the NURBS command makes too many dots and is hard to shape. Here's what it looks like now:
      fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t35.0-12/13016311_10207648791312693_500118302_o.png?oh=d82b759c5b303f835511d0a38d6ee0f7&oe=5710E96C&__gda__=1460735256_e2d41d9ddef0b73f8f7095180f66b01c
      Thank you in advance!

      @luxxeon3d  8 лет назад

      Medina Cevapovic I see what you mean there. Yes, Nurbs in 3dsmax are more difficult to control than standard quad polygon objects. Most of the advanced tools in 3dsmax favor quadrilateral polygons over triangles. Is that the only photo of the object you have? I'd like to see it from some different angles, but I already have an idea of how I would approach the model. I'd begin by tracing the outline profile of the object with quads. Basically, I'd draw a flat profile of the object first by extruding a simple plane over the top of a photo of the model. This would allow me to get a rough "sketch" of the shape consisting entirely of quad polygons. From there, I would tweak the vertices to match up as closely as possible with the outline of the shape in the photo, then I would create the "extrusions" by chamfering edgeloops in the same place as those features along the mesh. Perhaps I can create a quick video of this process for you, but I'm very busy, so I can't promise anything quickly.

    • @earlysunsetzg
      @earlysunsetzg 8 лет назад

      Thank you although I have to admit that I'm not advanced in 3ds max so I don't understand what you mean. I'll explore some more into it and I'll send you another photo. I have to model it by saturday so if you don't have time, I understand and thank you again:)

    • @earlysunsetzg
      @earlysunsetzg 8 лет назад

      Hy, John Malcolm I tried doing something similar but I think I did it the wrong way and I'm not satisfied with the way it turned out. I have no control over the model and can't really construct an architectural space inside. Could you explain how you would go about making the model one more time? :)

      The technique also works for edges, vertices, etc. I assume you're working with a recent version of 3dsmax? Older versions had a different way of dealing with this, but this should work for Max 2016 and up.

      Edge selection is even easier. Just douible click on any edge and you will select the entire edge loop. This won't work in polygon mode, but it's a breeze in edge mode!

      +George64 Hi. I used the Corona render engine for 3dsmax, with a simple HDR environment. I was using the free A6 release of Corona, which is available for download at their website. I painted the texture maps for the object, by hand, in 3d Coat.

      +George64 I took a quick look at your website. I'll look at it deeper later, but from what I see so far, it's very impressive. FIrst of all, I've got to credit you for such a dynamic and clean looking website design. Excellent work there, and very impressive effects. Your work looks well done, and that's the important part. Your renders are very good. Great lighting and modeling from what I see so far. Remember, if you're looking for a job with a studio, it might be good to have some wire and clay renders in the gallery too.

    • @luxxeon3d
      @luxxeon3d  9 лет назад

      +pauljs75 Thank you for commenting. If you ever do decide to try this one in Blender, I would love to see the results. In Blender 2.75a, there's a new modifier which helps achieve the same results as the 3dsmax Relax modifier; the new Corrective Smooth modifier allows you to pin boundaries while smoothing, which is useful for certain effects, and saves time over the standard vertex smoothing on selected points. It's a fairly simple object to create, but I never did get around to translating this video to the Blender platform, unfortunately. So let me know if you give this one a go, and I'll promote to your video from here, to share with others. Thanks again.
